Tony G (@t_o_n_y_g) produces, DJs, co-runs @sorry-records, and enthusiastically supports a broad range of music on NYC's dancefloors. In addition to his own DJing and releasing tracks on Sorry, Eto Ano, Toucan Sounds, and more, he has organized ambient, experimental, and leftfield parties as Giambrone & Co at Brooklyn venues like Jupiter Disco and Mansions. Like his close collaborator, Sorry Records' @nickboydnyc, Tony brings an expansive knowledge of the context of dance music and an energetic attitude to each release and dancefloor. "This mix was a re-creation of a set I did at the Stream Informer Glen Falls House party this past June. I recorded the live set and was hoping to release that, but I was redlining a little too hard, and the recording came out hopelessly distorted. I was really proud of the mix and put a lot of work into it, so 3 months after the fact I decided to revisit it.

In preparing the set initially I decided to pretend I was playing to the sunrise even though the set ended at 4AM. Sunrise for me means… trance, I guess. It was a really cute party and lots of friends (Alyce included!) were there providing tons of warm and wiggly energy. I remember looking out and seeing someone twerking on the subwoofer at one point. My summer was kind of up and down after that, so it was a really positive memory to revisit.

I did this incarnation of the mix in my living room with 2 old CDJ 2000s, one XDJ 700 that I borrowed from my friend Danny, and my Mastersound 4 rotary mixer. I spent one day practicing, then did two full takes over the next two evenings. The take you’re hearing right now was the last one that I recorded. Looking back at the tracklist, one thing that stands out is how much new music I played, which is pretty rare for me. You’re not usually gonna see this much music from 2020 and beyond in a Tony G tracklist."

You never know what you’ll get when Tony G is at the controls - his unpredictable DJ sets reflect his kaleidoscopic taste and years of diligent record collecting. As a producer, he has released music on Sorry Records, Eat Dis, Eto Ano, Toucan Sounds, and Super Tuff, and he co-runs Sorry Records with his friend Nick Boyd.

"This was a mix I recorded on a whim one night shortly before moving out of New York. I was trying to sell some records before I moved and thought I’d go through some of the house records on my shelves that I wasn’t super familiar with. This mix was the result… safe to say i didn’t sell any of these records! 

PS: I recorded this mix a few months ago and went back just recently to figure out the tracklist.. most of them I remembered pretty easily, a few took some deeper digging through the record shelf, and there’s one track that, as of this mix being released, I cannot ID! It’s on the tip of my tongue.. maybe i’ll come back and update the tracklist at some point. Anyways, hope you enjoy!"

Hello and welcome to my kitchen. I am Tony Giambrone, a descendant of Italians on my father's side. Here is how I make red sauce. I wish I could say that it was a family recipe. Instead it borrows heavily from alt-comedian Eric Wareheim's Nonna Sauce, with some modifications and some key instructions on incorporating your sauce with the pasta. It is a great, easy, meatless meal to make for friends and family. I hope that it pairs well with the music I have selected, which starts with jazz to help those alliums simmer and lands with an italo-disco chef's kiss, traversing many records that I love to listen to while I cook in between. I hope you love it as much as I love you.

Ingredients:

1 box of your favorite pasta 
1/2 cup high quality olive oil
One large yellow onion
One head of garlic with nice big cloves
A couple of leaves of basil
2 large cans of whole peeled San Marzano tomatoes 
Oregano, red pepper flakes, salt, pepper
A wedge of fresh parmesan cheese

Method:

1. Gather 4 to 6 friends at whoever’s house has the most comfortable kitchen.
2. If you drink alcohol, make a round of Americanos:
Fill a short glass with ice. Add one part Campari, one part sweet Vermouth, and two parts soda water. Garnish with an orange peel. Give it a quick whirl around the rim of the glass before you twist it and drop it into the drink. Fragrance is half the battle.
3. Hit play on the mix that accompanies this recipe
4. Dice your onion and garlic (the whole damn head!)
5. Heat the olive oil in a dutch oven or large sauce pan over very low heat. Add the garlic and a few basil leaves. Let it simmer for about ten minutes to infuse the garlic and basil into the oil. Be careful not to let the garlic burn! Stir often. 
6. Remove the garlic and basil from the oil and set aside.
7. Turn the heat up to medium and add the onion. Simmer for another ten minutes until the onion is translucent and soft. 
8. Add back in your garlic and basil as well as a pinch of oregano, red pepper flakes, and salt and pepper to taste. 
9. Add your tomatoes. Turn up the heat until the sauce starts to boil, then lower it to a gentle simmer. Start to gently crush the tomatoes against the side of the pot. Careful! They have a tendency to squirt their juices at you. Never wear a white shirt while you’re cooking sauce!
10. If you have a parmesan rind lying around for some reason, don’t be afraid to toss that in there for some added flavour.
11. Let the sauce simmer for at least an hour, until the tomatoes have broken down and the whole thing takes on a nice chunky but smooth consistency. Keep an eye on it and stir occasionally. 
12. Cook your pasta in a big pot of salted water until it’s just below al dente.
13. Reserve a cup of pasta water. 
14. Drain the pasta and add it back into the pot you cooked it in over low heat. 
15. Add a generous amount of your sauce to the pot. Stir it heartily for about a minute, slowly adding a few splashes of pasta water, until the noodles are coated in the sauce. 
16. Turn off the heat. Drizzle in some more olive oil, and grate some parmesan into it. Continue to stir until everything is combined. 
Serve with fresh basil and more fresh grated parmesan to garnish.
17. Consider serving with a side arugula salad, roasted vegetables, chicken thighs, eggplant parmesan… the list goes on! Mangia!

Oh honey, it’s got goddamn storytelling so aplenty you wouldn’t know what to do with yourself. While at it I suggest some eye-rolling exercises, to prevent those crow’s feet from spreading. If you have questions write a letter or, better yet, ask artificial intelligences. They are there to make you a better person.

Invisible City Editions is a cult reissue label based in Toronto, Canada. Run by Brandon Hocura and Gary Abugan, it puts out long overlooked or lost gems, much needed reissues and rare disco delights that immediately get snapped up by record collectors around the world. The men behind it are obviously avid diggers themselves, and really know how to pull out amazing records from many different genres. As such they also make for an amazing DJ team who surprise and shock, delight and entertain whenever they play. 

The sun scorched mix they have put together for us proves that: it is a truly worldly selection that marries off kilter funk with organic hand drums, afro futurism with house music’s sense of groove. Despite touching on so many diverse and hard to describe styles and left of centre melodies, it is all expertly tied together and perfectly sequenced so as to make for a truly different and distinctive ride.
