I had a lot of fun putting this mix together! Over 3hrs 33min and 33 seconds I try to take the listener on a bit of an astral journey with me, traversing between deep driving house, some percussive afro style deep house, deep electronic funk and old skool Chicago house.

333 Sessions 039 - Cassette

Hiya guys, with Warm Up Festival just around the corner I thought now would be a nice moment to share a special set that I played at last year's festival.

Whilst chilling in the campsite with friends after Max Cooper had closed the main stage on the Sunday night, I realised I still had my USB in my pocket, so I decided to jump on the decks in the Blue Moon tent, which is our after hours chill out spot. Before I knew it, the space was pulsating with soft rhythms and deep flowing grooves. The tent was oozing with love, and there were smiles on everyone's faces, and some tears of joy too. I felt like we were all in a cocoon together, cushioned by the warmth of the music, and feeling euphoric with the afterglow of what had just unfolded over the weekend. Warm Up Festival had finished, and this was our decompression as we wound down and reflected upon the beauty of the weekend.

I took this opportunity to revisit some of my old folders containing the deepest shades of house house music. Nothing was planned, but somehow each track I chose seemed to flow perfectly into the next and formed what turned out to be a really special journey. 

Those few hours will stay with me forever, it was the most enjoyable DJ’ing experience I've ever had. If you were one of the people in the tent with me that night, I hope you enjoy reliving the beautiful moments we shared together.

Let’s meet again this summer in the Blue Moon, after-hours on the Sunday night for round 2.

LIVE @ BURNING MAN (09.02.11) - BLOND:ISH

Part of the highly regarded Kompakt family, Blond:ish have carved out their own niche thanks to their original sound and fun-loving approach to life.

Better known to their parents as Anstascia D'elene and Vivie Ann Bakos, their productions have found home on labels which include Get Physical, Leftroom and Noir, and they have become a staple on the international club and festival circuit. Learning their trade at Cherry Nightclub in their then home town of Montreal (where they promoted and DJ-ed at their mid-week event called Blond:ish), it was a move to London which lead to a chance meeting with the Kompakt crew through a mutual friend. A series of releases later, in particular 'Endless Games' resonating far and wide, and the Canadians are now card holding members to one of the world's most prestigious imprints.

You would be hard pressed to find a better 2015 LP debut release than their 'Welcome to the Present', an introspective musical journey into back-to-nature mysticism and spiritual groove. The release featured a host of shamanic and organic-sounding instruments, and, with its nod to philosopher Alan Watts, strongly alluded towards their holistic approach to life (and music).

With our 40th podcast next up, the stars have finally aligned for the duo to deliver us a mix that was put together during some time off. ('We made it in Bali in between our yoga, meditation and spa days lol'). It even includes a fresh new production (the first track in the mix), spawned from a very recent recording session they had: 'We made it in a couple hours and just jammed along the groove track'. Featuring music from Ricardo Villalobos, Tuff City Kids, Dorisburg and more, this mix, as Blond:ish puts it, was made for times 'when you wanna get in the groooooove.' And they have absolutely nailed it....

Faetal (Taliya Cohen) is a musical explorer. She travels from the depths of the bass music ocean, through the ethereal world of enigmatic techno, over the mountains of syncopated afro- beats, and back again to the playful land of bouncy tech-house. She is on a quest to find music that reaches deep and inspires movement.
After two years managing the Round Venue, Taliya has found a passion behind the decks as well as behind the scenes, and has taken to curating a variety of events throughout the city. Faetal is a resident and organizer of the following events: Architextures, a weekly underground electronic music night at ROUND venue; Cylelogic, where predominantly female lineups supply groovy house and techno; Temporal Drift, a fun and funky monthly showcasing playful and jazzy multi genre sounds, and "Toronto Impulse” an alternative event at the MOD club. She is also involved in a variety of projects that focus on combining multiple genres: afro-beats, uk funky, bass, GQOM, hip hop, techno, and everything in between. These events aim to inspire dance filled evenings with friendly crowds and eclectic sounds.
When she isn’t behind the decks Faetal works as a full time circus performer with Illuminair Entertainment. Her love of movement and music lends to a deep commitment to keeping the dance floor both moved and moving.

When not playing drums in the pan-African hip-hop group, John Orpheus, you can catch Sarah Jane Riegler behind the DJ decks spinning tracks that reflect her unique musical journey.

Originally from a tiny town in Northern Michigan, Sarah Jane Riegler relocated to Toronto in 2012 to complete an MA in Ethnomusicology at the University of Toronto after finishing her Bachelor’s in Percussion. Although she focused primarily on classical and avant-garde music in her BA, she simultaneously developed a profound love for the music of sub-Saharan Africa. She started private study of West African percussion nearly a decade ago, and spent a semester studying percussion & dance at the University of Ghana in 2011 while also completing fieldwork around the country.

While out in the clubs in Accra, she became instantly hooked when hearing afrobeats and has been exploring popular music from all over sub-Saharan Africa ever since! Craving the incredible energy from the dance floors of continent as well as a platform to showcase genres not often played in downtown Toronto, she created a dance party in February 2018 called Afro Haus that features afrohouse, kuduro, afrobeats, gqom, and more!

Secret Society Sessions is a show broadcasted live every Wednesday 6-9pm.

Our goal is to provide the atmosphere for a regular gathering that revolves around our love for music and the celebration of getting over the hump of the week. Come early, spend a few hours with your friends listening to artistically curated sounds and go home happy, proving that a night out does not have to be followed by a day in.

This is more than a radio show… it is a social collective for people at play. We invite you for after work drinks, food and games!

On July 14th, 150 blessed folks came through and shared some laughs, sunshine, good vibes, and a little 1-2 step at a beautiful park in downtown Toronto, for the first ever Afro Haus (https://soundcloud.com/afrohaus) Park Party! 

This was my sonic contribution to the event, alongside 7 other epic local afro DJs! From afrobeats to kuduro to gqom to afrohouse, this set was a proper tour around the continent, with a few left turns into Brazil as well! It was inspired by the infamous mid-summer, sun-soaked, vibe-filled park hangs that all of us in Toronto wait for ALL YEAR! 

It makes for the perfect soundtrack to any summer day... complete with an afrohouse remix of "Thong Song" ;) Enjoy!

August's full moon in Aquarius was by far one of my most memorable and magical nights in Toronto period ✨🔮 Basking under the rays of the moon, on a gorgeous rooftop in the downtown core, with the most open and lit audience... it was truly a symbiotic creative moment for me, inspiring what I'd say is the best set I've ever spun.

This ecstatic dance live set was bookended by a cacao ceremony at the beginning and followed by a closing sound bath. On this winding journey, you'll find delicious, rhythmically-focused dance music from all around the globe - Middle East, India, West Africa, East Africa, Southern Africa, Central America, and South America - that combines textures and sounds from times past with contemporary dance and popular music.

In commemoration of the 105th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide DJ's Shaunt Raffi and Sarah Jane Riegler bring you sounds from Armenian, the diaspora and beyond.

The first half the set, by Shaunt Raffi, provides traditional Armenian sounds fused with jazz and soul. in the second half Sarah Jane Riegler flips all of that on its head with deep house interpretations of Armenian melodies.

I put together this special IG live set as a shout out to the incredible music of my hometown - Toronto - featuring lots of local afro artists & producers, a Drake & Partynextdoor remix by local afro DJ Revy B, and a gqom remix of The Weeknd by moi! 

We have so much power as DJs in our curation, as we select who gets heard. Now more than ever, it’s important that we use our platform to promote marginalized voices and elevate our local scenes to the recognition they deserve. And lemme tell ya'll: the underground afro scene in TO is EPIC and deserves all the attention it can get. 

Shout out to my friends Icarus Sound (Sarah & Femi!)over in Calgary for giving me this opportunity to shout out my city on their IG Live.  When COVID hit, they stepped in and created a live streams every damn Sunday since March that has been bridging afro scenes and creating supportive partnerships between communities across the country & world. Originally from a tiny town in Michigan, Sarah moved to Toronto in 2012 to complete an MA in Ethnomusicology at the University of Toronto after finishing a BA in Music in Michigan. She became a professional drummer/percussionist at age 15, and somehow her love of punk, ska, and metal evolved into a deep study of Western classical & avant-garde music. During her BA, she fell in love with West African drumming, and traveled all over Ghana while studying traditional percussion & dance at the University of Ghana in 2011.

After moving to Toronto, Sarah began studying and performing percussion from Bali, Java, Brazil, and India. She also performed for many years in indie bands such as O Frontera, The Northen Empties, John Orpheus, Oxford Blue, Ghost Caravan, and Catch Fiyah. With these bands, she's toured and played across the US & Canada, as well as festivals like NXNE, MixTO, and CMW. Music from these groups has had placements in Kim's Convenience, virgins!, and an Off White x Jimmy Choo Paris Fashion Week campaign.

In 2017, Sarah started throwing an event series called Haus Orpheus with bandmate & business partner John Orpheus. Haus Orpheus featured pan-African artists, dancers, DJs, poets, musicians, and vendors in an art gallery in downtown Toronto. Sarah had been on the aux cable nonstop at these events, so under the encouragement of her band mates & community members, Sarah started DJing.

As a DJ, Sarah finally had an outlet to share her love & library of popular, underground, and electronic African music that she had been collecting since she lived in Ghana. In 2018, Sarah founded the all-African music party Afro Haus, a now infamous & vibrant community in downtown Toronto of local afro DJs, musicians, dancers, visual artists, performance artists, and producers. 

Sarah has also co-produced the event series Urban Jungle, Haus Orpheus, and Wickxd Womxn.
