Kartoons, owned by the world renowned Nicky Blackmarket was a direct offshoot from the home of Blackmarket Records. Founded in 1997 with a total of 34 releases, the label featured the likes of Ray Keith, TNT (Target & Trend) alongside some lesser known artists such as Jonnie Braze, Live Crew (DJ Profile & Trend) and Fade. 

2 Degrees was, without a doubt, the biggest selling release on Kartoons which must have featured in every drum & Bass DJs set during 1997. Love it or hate it, this record paved the way for Jump Up in the late 90's. The sample "better get the old man down here", taken from the 1983 film Wargames played a memorable part in the track, as does the string intro and what I assume was some kind of elephant sample.

The main drawback of the label, and possibly why it wasn't recognised by some as credible is probably because it was trying to be a bit of everything. Hopefully the mix will prove this, its a mixture of jungle, bordering early liquid, some tech step, jump up and a bit of hard step - so many sub genres I could probably write a book just on that.

Personally, I love the Kartoons label and can't wait to see what's in store for 2016's relaunch.

Final word in this write up must be to pay respect to Trend - RIP.

DJ Jamie - All Kartoons

After my last label mix (Kartoons) I thought it best for my next mix to pay homage to my all time favourite drum & bass producers, two artists who I have stalked on Discogs in a kind of worrying fashion over the last few years, trying to pick up obscure remixes and forgotten bits of vinyl. Aphrodite has carried his style well over the years and since the early days of jump up his production has been duplicated, copied, ripped off by many - some have succeeded in manipulating that trademark bass, others have blatantly done a poor job. I don't think that drum & bass would have been what it was in the mid 90's without contribution from both Micky Finn & Aphrodite, nearly every set in '95 and '96 featured heavily with tracks from Urban Takeover and other sub labels. I think for me, the clever use of hip hop samples, straight kicks and snares along with the original wobble bass seems to be a winning formula.

It really hit home when Stalker was featured in Human Traffic in 1999, the same year Aphrodite released his self titled album - this was a time when, for me, the direction of drum & bass seemed uncertain. A time when new genres were popping up all over the place, most of my close DJ friends had moved over to the likes of UK garage or the deeper aspects of drum & bass.

Aphrodite obviously still plays all over the world, his sets these days still seem to feature the same spark his production did all those years ago, he seems to have moved on though bassline wise with his own production - not really something I am that keen on. That's just a person thing though although I guess he had to move on sometime.

So here's part one of some of my all time favourite releases by Micky Finn & Aphrodite, a collection spanning many years and many samples. All mixed on 2 Technics 1210's and a DJM700, nothing fancy but then I don't think this series needs it.

They say time flies and in this situation it certainly does considering one of the greatest jump up producers, DJ Trend, passed away on 17th September 2010 on his 32nd birthday.

Well known for his output in the late 90’s on Kartoons and his label Live Recordings, Trend had his own unique style of simplic beats for the dance floor. 2 Degrees, Tune Your Bass, Another Classic and Anthem were all huge tunes supported by every DJ on the circuit near the end of the millenium. 

My fondest memory of Trend’s production has to be hearing DJ Hype play ‘2 Degrees’ at Helter Skelter Human Nature. It was absolutely ridiculous, everyone in The Sanctuary went totally mental and to this day I have yet to see a tune cause such mayhem. A close second to this would be Kenny Ken playing ‘Tune Your Bass’ alongside Stevie Hyper D at Helter Skelter Energy ‘97 - a legendary set.

Trends album ‘New Beginnings’ is certainly worth checking out, maybe the title was suggestive to the content as his style seem deeper and more melodic. ‘Check Dis Out’ is a personal favourite of mine.

Although using ‘DJ’ in one of his producer guises, his actual DJ work doesn’t seem to be that well publicised, especially online. I suspect that he played at many pirate stations during his time, sadly I don’t have any of these in my collection.

Dizzie Rascal paid tribute to Trend by wearing a RIP DJ Trend T-Shirt during his appearance on Sky Televisions ‘Must be the Music’. He also spoke about his grief and the music influence taken from Trend commenting “I have got to say: Rest in peace, DJ Trend. Never forgotten, drum and bass specialist legend”.

No doubt Dizze Rascal grew up with Trend’s Drum & Bass production, and although his influences may have been forgotten over the years with his crossover to the mainstream it was certainly evident in his earlier days of Grime.

Talking of Grime and the UKG scene, Trend’s label Left Records moved with the times in 2002 and provided a whole host of releases for this, at the time, fresh movement. The likes of Wiley, Roll Deep, J2K and Sweetie Ire featured on the label before it finalised its output in 2006.

2 Degrees was also officially remixed by Geeneus in 2002 providing the 2 Step scene with a fresh take on the anthem. It is also well documented that Trend also made movements in the commercial scene, lending his hand to the production for Sugababes, The Streets and Daniel Bedingfield.

You can still hear the likes of Eksman, Fearless and Bassman pay respect to the late, great Stevie Hyper D - perhaps the younger generation of ravers have no knowledge of other important players in the scene who have passed away. The likes of MC Ruff, G E Real, DJ Kemistry, and Murray Beetson all deserve a mention, no doubt others who I am unaware of has also sadly passed away.

175 Crew started 175 Records in 1997, here’s a brief history of the owners, the output and the end result.

I originally assumed that 175 Crew came from America however it turns out the 2 members were in fact Alistair Ash and Noel Simmonds (otherwise known as Nu Balance). The duo later went on to sign tracks to Trouble on Vinyl at the start of the millennium.

The mix contains every release from 175 Crew bar Funk Over Dose / Rippin Up Shows.

175 Crew should have put out more of this kind of style in my opinion; it was a combination of hip hop breaks, vocal samples and jump up basslines that made their style a winner. Admittedly the biggest track was Volume 1 from their own label which was a firm favourite by the likes of Kenny Ken and Nicky Blackmarket, I think even Hyper D had a soft spot for the labels production.

Rewind to 1996 and I can image what ideas would have been going round the duo’s heads, it would an ideal time to set up a label like this and although the Jump Up market was busy, it certainly was splitting in direction by 1997 when the first release was sold commercially.

I’m not really sure why they didn’t put more tunes out on their self-titled label , the style of the production suited the era perfectly although 2 releases a year was a pretty poor show and with times changing dramatically in 1999 it was no surprise the label was canned. Looking back on this it would have been much more of a success if 175 Crew had followed in the direction of True Playaz who put out a whole heap of quality in both 1997 and 1998 using only a select number of producers. 175 Crew probably only needs 2 or 3 more producers to make the label more of success.

A remix of Volume 1 by Crystal Clear was later put out on Heavy Rotation in 2009 which received heavy criticism from the drum & bass community. This was probably a sign of the times though as many of the younger generation embraced the track, probably not having heard the original and seeing no relevance as to why people were moaning.
