There was a chill in the air, the kind that preceded a sinister or unfortunate event. Now darkness arrived much earlier, the streets emptied leaving only the nightcrawlers to roam at their leisure. Under the veil of night, societal rules went out of the window. There was no longer any law enforcement patrolling these parts, they'd given up on that a long time ago, there was only so much that could be done to keep these creatures at bay.

Following releases from Lårry and Aroent, Berlin-based imprint Awkwardly Social are gearing up for their first ever VA, bringing together some of their favourite artists and label mates. A release that's given the label 'plenty to be excited about', the four tracks feature music from previous affiliate Lårry, Pugilist, J.Wiltshire and Yushh, all of whom bring different flavours with their originals: from ambient to glitch, electro and leftfield.

[Premiere] Atlas From Nowhere - Conversation (out on Plor)

Bell Curve’s polymorphic music never stays in the same place for long. From hyperkinetic jungle-footwork hybrids to heavyweight steppers, the New York-via-Texas producer’s prolific output is in a state of constant flux. Each of Bell Curve’s kaleidoscopic tracks, eclectic DJ sets and forward-looking mixes for her residency on Rinse FM's Bristol station SWU FM are anchored by chest-rattling bass pressure but always evolving, forging new pathways from the club out into the cosmos. Recent acclaimed releases have seen the producer picked up by SSPB / Seilscheibenpfeiler, Dome of Doom and Moveltraxx, including a collaboration with Tampa rap duo They Hate Change which was hailed by Bandcamp as, quite simply, “the business” in their Best Electronic Music column. Bell Curve’s Snake in the Grass EP for her own new Raspberry Rhythms label collects tracks that are simultaneously some of the producer’s most ambitious, expansive and yet focused work to date, including a new team-up with Jamaican-born, Switzerland-based dancehall queen Lateena.

The Snake in the Grass EP is underpinned by a looming sense of dread, grappling with the anxieties of trying to exist and move forward in an era where we’re bombarded by constant, extinction-level threats. The title track emerges from primordial murk, an undulating bassline skulking through the undergrowth, sending percussive fragments skittering off before it as the track slowly winds up into a mesmeric, slow-motion stepper. “Stop (Call Mi Phone)” dials up the humidity, delving into mutant dancehall pressure with vocalist Lateena’s buttery flow curling around the bounce and swing of Bell Curve’s body rhythms. “Pitch and Whine” slinks back into the gloom, playing with space and tension. After-echoes of drum breaks spark around the track’s tectonic pulse, providing a fizzing sense of anticipation that bubbles just beneath the surface, threatening to tip over into full-on frenzy at any moment.

Rather than indulging in pure hedonistic escapism, the three tracks compiled here face the ever-present anxieties of contemporary living head on, with Bell Curve imbibing them into her hypnotic soundscapes. The Snake in the Grass EP is laden with disquiet, but it is also defiant and resolute - using the act of creation itself as a way to process and navigate through the madness.

After almost four years, the new album is finally finished. To be honest, I never planned it. It came about in stages. Sometimes haltingly, sometimes smoothly, and sometimes not at all. In the end, though, I can say that it's the most personal of all my previous albums.
