I was a bit shy about sharing this side of me🫣😶‍🌫️ , but finally did it. I tried to blend some of my favorite sounds: footwork, halftime, dubstep, DnB, and deeper vibes. It's not perfect, but it's 100% from my heart❤️ Massive thanks to my close friends for all the support, and a special shout out to DJ Strawberry for the lessons and for pushing me to record 🙏🏻🔨🎛️

Pour cette 5e digtatrack session, nous accueilons Idris, membre de longue date du collectif parisien SeekSickSound. Il s’attache à mettre en valeur la culture club dans toute sa richesse et sa diversité, que ce soit à travers ses mixs, les soirées qu’il organise, ou ses choix éditoriaux sur les chaînes première et podcast de SSS. Désormais basé à Berne, il est résident sur Rinse France et Loose Antenna, développant sa pratique de DJ autour d’un profond attachement aux sons hybrides et à un éclectisme réfléchi, bien que ses sets gravitent toujours autour de la bass music, de la techno et du global club.

For this 5th Digtatrack session, we welcome Idris, a long-time member of the Paris-based collective SeekSickSound. He is dedicated to showcasing club culture in all its richness and diversity, whether through his mixes, the events he organizes, or his editorial choices on SSS's main and podcast channels. Now based in Bern, he is a resident on Rinse France and Loose Antenna, developing his DJ practice around a deep connection to hybrid sounds and a thoughtful eclecticism, though his sets always orbit around bass music, techno, and global club.

In 2013, Different Circles launched with Weightless Volume One, a compilation that helped define a new minimalist aesthetic in electronic music. 

Twelve years later and after a six-year pause, the label returns with its tenth release: Ping Volume One.

Like weightless, ping isn’t a genre. It's an approach to anchoring and propelling sound without relying on the steady pulse of a kick drum.

Instead, a single percussive hit — the ping — holds the centre. Dry and high in the mix, or echoing distantly through space, it becomes a temporal anchor. Around it, the rest of the track can undulate, bend, float or collapse.

The term first appeared on Mumdance’s radio show, where playing “the pingy ones” from the Different Circles back catalogue became a running joke. In the Discord community, it evolved into a shared language, with memes, lore and a mascot known as the Ping Devil.

In 2023, Mumdance aired The “Ping Report” a radio show that gathered everything into a coherent moodboard. It included original tracks made by Discord members for the show and set the foundations. From there, more producers began making ping intentionally, and over time, Ping Volume One took shape.

As the idea came into focus, Logos and Mumdance noticed that much of the Different Circles back catalogue, if not explicitly weightless, could now be understood through the lens of ping. It was a sound they had been drawn to long before they had a language to describe it.

Ping Volume One is a document of shared instinct. A collection of tracks connected by feel rather than formula, shaped by years of dialogue between a community of artists and listeners who were drawn to the same sounds & ideas before they had a name.

Here's a track I just put out as part of the 10th anniversary compilation of one of my favourite labels, Glasgow's finest Bricolage. It also happens to be the first track I'm putting out as a solo production under my own name. It is kinda ambient/downtempo/dub/lo-fi/IDM-ish - I hope you like it!
