IN retrospect

In 1977, at the age of 17, I got my first job spinning records at a local discotheque called Dimension 4located in Dixon Illinois. Admittedly, I knew nothing of mixing music but enjoyed the end results of what could be accomplished with 2 records, 2 turntables and a mixer.
     Going to other discotheques and listening to talented disc jockeys skillfully mix their sets was not only fun but a good learning experience. Also, the release of records such as Frankie Crocker’s Winners and A Night At Studio 54 became a text book to help me understand that there are a variety of mixing techniques a dj can use to smoothly blend songs together.
      While working at the discotheque I invested in a complete sound system. This allowed me to practice mixing at home and earn money as a mobile dj playing at parties and high schools.  Eventually I bought  a tape recording deck and started recording my sets and produced many mix tape, most were given away through the decades or through deterioration have been lost. But luckily, some were savaged and posted on SoundCloud. 
     Through the decades I held on to my vinyl collection even when CDs became more popular and disc jockeys started converting to digital formats. I’m glad that I still have all my vinyl collection and I continue to record with them. Although there are times when digital recordings sound better than vinyl the overall difference is minor. 
     In 2008 I recorded and produced the Very Vinyl Medley. The medley was a labor of love. The only regret I have is I didn’t know how to calibrate recording tape so I lost about 10% of audio quality. The flip side of the project was it gave me a sense of pride that I had “graduated “ and could now call myself a disc jockey. 
     The style of mixing I employ mostly when mixing records is mixing with compatible keys and not being restricted by how many measures makes a good mix. In my opinion, a single handclap from one record to another can make a really awesome mix as well as 16 or 32 beat overlay. 
      In the last decade I started sharing my disco recordings because I found it was getting harder and harder to find classic disco dj recordings. SoundCloud has given me an opportunity to share my talents with others who enjoy and miss disco music. Others enjoy listening to mix tapes but don’t necessarily have the equipment to make them. 
     My hopes are these mix tapes brings enjoyment to those who found them make time to listen them.
