Please Be Kind

First off, I don’t think this song is my best work, I personally think it’s a repetitive, bubblegummy ripoff of about seventeen much better songs. However, a dear friend and collaborator, Jackson Honeycutt, enjoyed it when I played it for him a few weeks back which left me thinking about the circumstances under which this song was written. I remember trapping myself in my bedroom in November 2015 with my Martin and Microkorg for about a week desperately trying to express myself in anyway possible. I was so upset I couldn’t even play a whole line, so I just recorded random notes and rearranged them into something that sounded good to me. A week before this, I attended my grandfather’s funeral, which left me depressed, confused, and suffering from about three panic attacks a day. I was about to drop out of school, I wanted desperately to leave Greensboro, and felt as if I had no friends. I felt like my life was falling apart around me and I couldn’t do anything about it. The only escape I had was music. My grandfather was and will always be one of my main inspirations in my life. He showed me all of the great musical films when I was a child, which led me to singing in choirs, musicals, and picking up the guitar. He could do anything he wanted to, from coding important early computer programs to flying planes to playing trumpet to raising a family to maintaining a gorgeous garden in the NoDa section of Charlotte. He was the modern renaissance man. He was raised on a farm in Kansas, worked as hard as possible to get educated, became a pilot, and worked his way up to the top at IBM. He was a staunch Republican most of his life, but then completely flip-flopped later in life to the Democratic party. He loved volunteering with impoverished children in Charlotte, he was active within his church, he supported the arts, he respected women… he was literally the perfect gentleman. He lived life better than anyone else I’ve ever met. I really just wanted to make something that would make him happy and capture his “aura”. On the day of my grandfather’s funeral, Made of Oak released his EP “Penumbra” which I listened to all the way through on the way to the drive towards the ceremony. I had looked up to this man since I was in highschool, he seemed to play bass in every great band in Raleigh and Durham, his beats for Sylvan Esso are amazing, and he’d given me great advice on production and mind-blowing music recommendations every time I had met him. I wouldn’t know about granular synthesis, Four Tet, Collection of Colony of Bees, or how to get over my constant self doubt (okay, to be honest I still haven’t) and accept my “sound” if it wasn’t for him. But hearing the haunting voices, the clacking keys, and building of the grainy ambience on the recording of “Penumbra” brought all of these emotions and memories of my grandfather into the forefront of my mind. And then out of nowhere there’s this sudden drop into “Pinebender” that completely took me off guard. There’s really no words to describe this feeling, but I guess it’s like if those EDM songs did that whole bassdrop thing but with actual emotions*. But to me it felt symbolic of this great person just dropping out of my life, and now I had to continue, just like the rest of the EP does. I guess really what I’m trying to say is that this song is trying to capture the cheer and essence of my grandfather and mix it with that surreal drop feeling. I repeat the melody to an almost ridiculous point** to symbolize my grandfather who was always there for me in those 19 years, and then change the entire context of the song and take the melody away entirely. I definitely didn’t do this as well as Made of Oak does but I think that’s besides the point. It’s choppy, it’s raw, it’s not a great song, but it’s my baby, and the time felt right to release it given the startup of the Greensboro Collective.
