August Silence is a meditation on absence, aftermath, and remembrance. Marking the 80th anniversary of the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, this piece does not aim to retell history, but rather to sit quietly within its long shadow. It draws upon the stillness of the moment after impact—when sound fades, smoke rises, and time seems to stop.

The string writing is sparse and suspended, often teetering on the edge of silence. Layered synth textures drift in and out like memory, while bowed percussion and soft, fragmented rhythms mimic the distant toll of bells or the fractured heartbeat of a wounded world. The atmospheric elements are meant to feel almost ghostlike—present, yet barely there—mirroring the lingering echoes of August 1945.

Rather than dramatize destruction, August Silence seeks to honor those lost by listening deeply into the silence that followed. It is a space for reflection, mourning, and a quiet plea for peace that still reverberates eight decades on.
