Gjone ‘Journey Man/ Shadowdancer’

Here at Selador Towers we like to pride ourselves in our diverse electronic music tastes and we’ve always tried to reflect that in our output. Throughout our short history we’ve run the gamut from Deep House to Techno and Tech House to Electronica stopping off at every flavour in-between. We’ve never been ones for pigeonholes. Horrible claustrophobic smelly things ;-)

This philosophy could not be more evident than right here on our next offering. Out of Denmark we bring you Gjone (pronounced Yoh-na) with two very different sounding original productions. 

First up ’Journey Man’ is an assured, distinctive piece of work, thanks in the main to it’s idiosyncratic vocal which elevates it head and shoulders above the crowd. Got more hooks than a nightclub cloakroom this one. 

Next comes the altogether more raw, bumpy house flavourings of ’Shadowdancer’. Contemporary, quirky, funky, deep house at it’s finest. Bad ass. 

On the remix tip, it’s all aboard the Techno train with Pete Oak at the helm. Pitching down the vocal and fuelled by driving beats and a thunderous baseline, this is peak time, dark room business.

And finally, rounding off the package in fine style, we welcome Inxec with his trademark techie beats underpinning an archetypal stabby motif that has style to burn.

A release that pulls in four different directions yet still manages to retain a unified outlook. Much like our label then :-)

Poker Flat's Forward To The Past anthology returns in its 3rd iteration, as lean and mean as it ever was and precision-engineered to make you jack, dream and all things in between. The winning formula remains the same: task a selection of hotshot veteran and up-and-coming producers with recapturing the style and mood of early club music, paying homage to the golden years between 1985 and 1992 when Chicago House and Acid, New York House and Detroit Techno took the world and its dancefloors by storm. The result is a collection of new and exclusive tracks as addictive as the stone cold classics that influenced them - a tribute and, at the same time, the cutting edge of contemporary music production.

Quell casts clouds of vocals and a repeated snippet of soul over a sinuous, undulating bassline.

Anaxander gives us classic acid with Gallic attitude, fine-tuned for the dancefloor.

Hard-touring DJ and Back to Basics resident Denney goes back to the old school, plunging you into the midst of a heaving dancefloor with a wobbling, fluttering acid track.

Glasgow's Debukas provides another Detroit-influenced highlight, letting his imagination run riot with a heartstring-pulling chord progression and contrapuntal synth lines.

Denny's Leeds-based neighbour Bakers Dozen aka Simon Baker provides 'Reaching' - an upfront Chicago groove that provides a full spectrum assault on the senses with its reverberating vocal and lush, layered synths.

A deluge of heavy-hitting support from some of the most legendary titans in dance music marks the return of award-winning Canadian producer Glenn Morrison to the dance floor.

After a considerable hiatus away from the EDM limelight working as a songwriter and producer for Sony Records and Universal Music Group – in the process bagging Billboard #1 singles and multiple radio awards / certified multi-platinum sales – Morrison is back with brand new long-player ‘Into The Deep’, introduced earlier this week via two double A-side EPs.

A pure passion project for Morrison, ‘Into The Deep’ is an exquisitely produced piece of work, a true journey of stereosonic discovery. Boasting a sound reminiscent of the critically-acclaimed ‘Northern Exposure’ compilations, Morrison brings an intelligent, thoughtful vibe back to dance music that many feel has been lacking in recent years. From dark, driving, progressive cuts to dreamy, trance-like singles; from throbbing, grinding, tribal tones through to hypnotic, undulating, bass-heavy pieces, this is a world class producer indulging himself and us in sound – doing what he loves and doing it very, very well.

Standout tracks on the album that premiered earlier this week include ‘Hang Tough’ – where Morrison uses John Harris’ poem ‘The Gospel According to John’ to tell the sordid tale of a drugged out prostitute turning over a normal man to the same hollow lifestyle – and ‘Another Dimension’, a dark and intense build up of sounds swelling through cascading melodies into an eruption of syncopated synth and grand piano riffs that take the track’s sentiment in a completely unexpected direction. Titular track ‘Into The Deep’ lingers delicately on the palate, Morrison taking his time to draw the listener in and out of his creation almost as if we need his sounds to breathe. A little stronger and a little darker, ‘Bumblebee’s driving elements of techno and chugging minimal house underpin deceptively simplistic top layers making it perfect for those mid-set progressions in the early morning hours or, as Morrison suggests, “Space Ibiza terrace early night kind of vibe.”

“I needed to get back to writing these instrumental pieces where the riffs are the vocal lines, and the vibe is a sort of hypnotic mysticism mixed with late night mind bending chasers,’ Morrison continues. ‘‘Into the Deep’ is a celebration of forward thinking progressive house music; a dash of eccentric and brash synth melodies juxtaposed with bright, uppity grand piano chords and warped out arpeggiations that I hope will light up both dance floors and late night music sessions the world over.”

Hidden Empire and Channel X go back to back productionwise and set off a joint release with 6 original dancefloorready compositions. Apocalyptic vocals proclaim (This is) 'Not the End' in the analogously entitled track, triggering the release on a dynamic and fast paced tone. With a playful groove laden with descending synths, the piece buzzes along on a backdrop of alternating noise leads. 
'Dinosaurs in Space' evokes a far away land through cavernous soundscapes and metallic rattles, ranking as the series’ most spacious sounding cut. Pairing mechanical subsynths with high pitched bits and blobs, 'Elephants & Ants' plays on contrasting elements as the murky melody unfolds in a steadfast fashion. After mainly focusing on their live performance. 

Channel X return to the studio to dole out a matching set of three aptly crafted arrangements. An amalgamation of shadowy soundframes make up 'Before Midnight', a deep tech exploration complemented by matchingly eerie vocals.
Spirited synths and a boiling bassline are the central tenets of 'Lift off', as the melody rolls out gradually. 'Waves' brings together slices of undulating synths and wobbly sound articulations, all in an upwinding manner. With a groovy vocal sample, the track deftly morphs into a movementinducing frenzy.
