Higher and Higher

Originally recorded in 2007.  This was the mix that forced me to buy Torq. I remember fiending for "Everything I am" after hearing Graduation and wanting to get that song on my turntables desperately. When the people at Fat Beats told me that the Graduation album wasn't going to be released on vinyl, something had to give. A few days later I was a Torq owner and working on this mix. I still buy vinyl, but not nearly as much as I once did (which is good for my wallet but bad for the record stores)

Music suffered a huge loss late last night/early this morning... We lost Phife Dawg of ATCQ & Native Tongues to health issues. Just like everyone else, I've been listening to Tribe all day and stumbled across these Native Tongues mixes I did for my people over at So Much Soul Clothing a few years back and figured I'd upload them. There's 2 parts to this mix, make sure you check them both out.

The Native Tongues Mix (Part I)

The mix that started it all. Makossa Classics initially came about as a 30 minute demo that I used to give to venues and promoters when I was looking for gigs. The mix consisted of some of my favorite songs I was playing at a new Tuesday weekly in Oakland called "Makossa" with my partner Joe Quixx. I thought the types of music we were mixing and the way we played them were unique and I wanted to capture that. I always got a good response when I would play the demo for friends so on the eve of the 2nd anniversary of our Makossa party I decided to add 30 more minutes and make it an official mix as a giveaway at the party. Long story short the response was great, Makossa traveled across the Bay and across the country to New York, and Vol. 2 came to light a couple of years later. For those that have only heard Vol. 2 and are hearing this for the first time I'm sure the voicemail intro will make a little more sense now. Hope you enjoy! -Wonway
