On with the Rave Kid series. I've had this one planned for ages, but frankly, there's just not enough hours in the day for all this wonderful music. It is a sequel of sorts to Part 4, happy stomping breakbeat hardcore jungle techno. You know damn well what I'm talking about. A feel-good selection inspired chiefly by three much-loved rave tapes - DJ Sy's excellent Obsession 'Battle of the Scratchmasters' set, and a pair of Ellis Dee and Sy cassettes (Club Adrenalin maybe) picked up at Glastonbury '94, which got utterly rinsed over the course of a fortnight's camping holiday in Brittany. Naturellement, the tracklist is also heavily influenced by numerous Ratty, Slipmatt and Sublove mixes of that era. What a time to be alive and 18!

Here we are again, another Halloween mix, but this is a little different. Originating from late '91 to mid '92, when I first started my DJing career in Sydney. We have another 30 years Mix, which is why it took me a bit longer than usual to put this together. Original tunes from Ed Rush and DJ Trace, a Dath Vader (Power of the Darkside) tune, that I first heard Top Buzz play in 92, and the eerie Accelerator is Stuck mix that I first heard on an early Grooverider tape back in the day (R.I.P. Shaun Chatfield, who introduced me to it) and finally MASSIVE respect to the recently fallen Stu Allan (AKA 150 Voltz) for the amazing Chuckie tune. R.I.P legend.

Halloween 2022 - '92 Mix  - Part 1 - Rikochet

You can rightfully argue Jungle Techno was born in 92 (although the label was used as early as 91) but 1993 was when it really came into it's own, some like to attribute it purely to the Basement/Ron Wells sound but for me and many others it was generally the 93 sound of Jungle and very fuzzy lines exist between what was also termed Jungle Hardcore and Darkcore. Regardless it was still well and truly the prototype period and still a wonderful fusion before becoming more defined and divided in the next couple of years.
Right now there is a great new wave of producers fleshing out this sound (and Jungle and Hardcore in general) as it had such a small window which is exciting to see for us that have been into it since the early 90's.
So before heading back off overseas again I am happy to knock out this vinyl mix without too many of the usual classics which have kinda been overkilled for me(although Meditation and Bang The Drums made the cut) such as a previously unreleased Ratty dubplate, a couple of underplayed Detroity Reinforced tracks and even some ravey Techno/Trance tunes that were personal favs on some classic  tapes from Sydney's bygone era. Compiling tracks for the 4th in my Rave Kid series got me thinking about what separates these from the beardier Evolution of Hardcore proto-D&B mixes, and as I scanned over a handful of my fave Sy and Slipmatt tapes from '93 the answer was crystal clear: great big huge blatant samples, rave riffs, breakbeats with stomping kickdrums, acid lines and the odd chipmunk. Mixed it up with a bit of darkside/jungle techno of course, but it's the cheerfully stomping exuberance of Wishdokta et al that's central to the vibe here. Anyway, I shan't dissect this too much, just pop it on nice and loud and enjoy the weekend yeah? L8rzzzz X

Home of my own mixes - predominantly jungle/hardcore with the odd bit of D&B, plus eclectic sample-digging, breaks and hip-hop, techno & electronica. 

Pre-2001, all mixes vinyl; Post-2016, all mixes digital (DJay 2); Post-2018, Ableton Live. Why? Why not?
I've got an old skool DJ's mentality, early influences ranging from Sublove, Ratty, Randall & Hype to Coldcut, DJ Juice, MK & Primo.  In the early 00s I turned my back on D&B, retired my turntables in favour of family/work commitments, and got into funk, soul, reggae and so on... a lot of this driven by curiosity around the sample roots of hardcore and jungle.  Forward another decade and an early mid-life crisis saw me messing around with virtual decks on my phone, and later acquiring a vinyl ripper, with one vision in mind: making mixes.
Although I'm partial to the odd DJay or vinyl mix when I get the chance, the progression into Ableton Live was a simple means to an end.  My ideas stretch further than the limitations of my physical collection and real-time mixing, and by sequencing I can pick, choose, chip away and structure mixes at my leisure. Which I do... a lot :)

Wait, there's more ... an absolute stack of classic golden era/old skool hip-hop/turntablism, jungle and d&b, hardcore, techno and house mixes retrieved from my dusty tape & CD archives.  This includes (by my reckoning) the most exhaustive collections of classic Full Cycle and Sublove Galaxy Radio shows, live Ruffneck Ting jungle tapes, loads of studio & compilation mixes, all manner of rave tapes, and so on.
