On with the Rave Kid series. I've had this one planned for ages, but frankly, there's just not enough hours in the day for all this wonderful music. It is a sequel of sorts to Part 4, happy stomping breakbeat hardcore jungle techno. You know damn well what I'm talking about. A feel-good selection inspired chiefly by three much-loved rave tapes - DJ Sy's excellent Obsession 'Battle of the Scratchmasters' set, and a pair of Ellis Dee and Sy cassettes (Club Adrenalin maybe) picked up at Glastonbury '94, which got utterly rinsed over the course of a fortnight's camping holiday in Brittany. Naturellement, the tracklist is also heavily influenced by numerous Ratty, Slipmatt and Sublove mixes of that era. What a time to be alive and 18!

Continuing my hardcore revival, I've made a return to the Rave Kid series... such is my enthusiasm for this music right now that I've smashed out four new volumes already, and feel like I've got more in the tank. Been sat on Part 7 for a few weeks, and must confess I've been enjoying it massively: a selection drifting somewhere between my favourite Ratty, Sy & Slipmatt tapes with a few personals that I've been keeping back. Going right back to 1992-1993 with a selection inspired by old C90 tapes filled with London based pirate radio recordings from Pulse FM, Impact FM, Kool and Weekend Rush etc. 
DJs like Warlock, Skie, Transit and Jinx amongst others… 
A few of those original tapes got chewed up by my Walkman at the time and sadly there was no fix for that, just game over. 
Nice to go back and recreate the style of the sets I was listening to back then (unfortunately minus the chat and adverts which added a lot of atmospherics).

Dan 92 - 93 Hardcore London Pirates Selection

For the eighth Rave Kid mix I inadvertently created the love-letter to 1993 hardcore that I'd been meaning to do for almost 30 years. 

I cannot understate the influence of the Sublove Galaxy shows on me around that time, so when selecting from this era it's hard not to make a mix that sounds like a rehash of Jody Wisternoff's selections, but the digging has been deep and think I've got the balance right, for my own personal tastes at least (what else do I have?). It all deserves a few words, so some honourable mentions among the selection follow - frankly I could talk about them all at much greater length but I have got other things to do y'know ;)

4 Hero's 'Journey From The Light' had to come first. It's hard to express the impact this one had on me - an absolute masterpiece of imagination, sampling creativity and engineering ability. All four tracks on the EP are beyond superb, each utterly unique, and I've called them all my favourite at various points over the years, but really it has to be this one. Having heard JFTL twice on the radio in early Jan '93, it felt like an eternity waiting for the official release, pestering the Replay staff every Saturday to no avail (although picking up Enforcers 2 in the interim went quite some way to alleviate the agony). To paraphrase the words of many others, Journey From The Light will *always* sound like the future. 

Basement Records, dominating the jungle techno sound in these golden years, come next - it was hard to pick a couple of tunes not present on the Sublove tapes, but here they are. Sending 'Breaks The Unbreakable' out to Ciaran, I still have that tape you made mate, 'apologies for poor sound quality as all my records are fucked because I scratch with them' :) Tek-9's Rude Bwoy Remix... been wanting to drop those incredible opening pads in a mix for so long - a sorely overlooked, foul-mouthed gem from Dego; always conjures memories of picking up the 'Return of Tek-9' EPs in HMV for 49p each on a trip to Bath with my Mum. 'Sheet Metal' is one of those I've not heard in many sets, an unabashedly ravey darkside gem. Bay B Kane's 'Nowhere' - absurdly ahead of its time, interestingly the only amen-led track here. 'We don't need a crowd to have a party'.. *sigh*... Megadrive's classic Mega 2 and Rhythm For Reasons on Formation, a pair of absolute killers with one foot in the rave era, eternally looking to the future. Being quite the Nebula II superfan I can't not mention the X-Plore H-Core Remix, a particularly deranged darkcore workout even by their standards - absolutely brutal rave stabs, Dirty Harry sample and that LFO breakdown. God-damn!

Closing out with the hugely-underrated Untouchables 'It's Alright' (a relatively new one on me) and then Metal Heads' beautifully poignant 'Kemistry' as the only possible bookend to equal the 4 Hero intro. No words left for that one and I don't think you need them.

Compiling tracks for the 4th in my Rave Kid series got me thinking about what separates these from the beardier Evolution of Hardcore proto-D&B mixes, and as I scanned over a handful of my fave Sy and Slipmatt tapes from '93 the answer was crystal clear: great big huge blatant samples, rave riffs, breakbeats with stomping kickdrums, acid lines and the odd chipmunk. Mixed it up with a bit of darkside/jungle techno of course, but it's the cheerfully stomping exuberance of Wishdokta et al that's central to the vibe here. Anyway, I shan't dissect this too much, just pop it on nice and loud and enjoy the weekend yeah? L8rzzzz X

Pre-2001, all mixes vinyl; Post-2016, all mixes digital (DJay 2); Post-2018, Ableton Live. Why? Why not?
I've got an old skool DJ's mentality, early influences ranging from Sublove, Ratty, Randall & Hype to Coldcut, DJ Juice, MK & Primo.  In the early 00s I turned my back on D&B, retired my turntables in favour of family/work commitments, and got into funk, soul, reggae and so on... a lot of this driven by curiosity around the sample roots of hardcore and jungle.  Forward another decade and an early mid-life crisis saw me messing around with virtual decks on my phone, and later acquiring a vinyl ripper, with one vision in mind: making mixes.
Although I'm partial to the odd DJay or vinyl mix when I get the chance, the progression into Ableton Live was a simple means to an end.  My ideas stretch further than the limitations of my physical collection and real-time mixing, and by sequencing I can pick, choose, chip away and structure mixes at my leisure. Which I do... a lot :)

Wait, there's more ... an absolute stack of classic golden era/old skool hip-hop/turntablism, jungle and d&b, hardcore, techno and house mixes retrieved from my dusty tape & CD archives.  This includes (by my reckoning) the most exhaustive collections of classic Full Cycle and Sublove Galaxy Radio shows, live Ruffneck Ting jungle tapes, loads of studio & compilation mixes, all manner of rave tapes, and so on.
