I'm very excited to share the second mix in a very special project for the summer of 2022: 75 Shadows, my tribute to one of the most important labels in electronic music history ... Moving Shadow!

Over a five week period I will be releasing a new 15 track Moving Shadow tribute mix weekly, each dedicated to a specific year from 1993 to 1997. I think that when you hear the whole series, you will be able to understand just what an amazing and creative label Moving Shadow was, as in the space of just five years they released everything from euphoric breakbeat hardcore to sinister darkcore to jungle anthems to rugged hardstep to smoothly atmospheric drum n' bass to fearsome techstep, and beyond.

Sadly it's not the best sound quality, I ran a filter over it to clean it up as best I can. This one goes out to those who were there, hold tight for the rush.... Evolution Of Hardcore (Part I)

EZ all. Had a break from mixing for a month or so, thought I'd pop back with the first volume of a new series I've been planning for a while. In a similar vein to the Evolution of Hardcore series, this is my tribute to the Metalheadz Blue Note era... kicking off with an hour of heavyweight 96-97 business.
Original plan was to mix these live, but I don't have either the patience or spare time to achieve the desired result, so once again these wonderful tunes are cut up and sequenced for maximum rollout.

Shadowplay's mix is tuff, with razor sharp mix and blen, showcasing dubs and classics!! Shadowplay rinses this one proper, smashing it to bits, don't believe me, check the track list and roll this one out!!

Let's meet our selektah for episode 371, DJ Shadowplay:

First came across the rave scene in his home town of Hertford in 1989 when played a tape from Sunrise FM by a mates older brother, and he was hooked from then via pirate radio. He started buying records in 1990 from various stores, but got serious in late 1991 when he got his first set of belt drive turntables and mixer.

By 1992 he was a regular at local Parliament Records, owned and run by Rob Haigh (Omni Trio) and got to know the other regulars such as 2 Bad Mice, Rhodesy, Nookie and a few of the more local pirate DJ’s at the time, and constantly locked all weekend to the pirates at the time- Weekend Rush, Defection, Kool, Pulse and local Mad FM to name a few.

By the mid 90’s and the Technics 1210’s arrived, skills had been acquired, followed by guest shows and regular shows on pirates such as Network FM, Perception, Rude and Impact. By the end of the 90’s he had appearances at numerous events- Jungle Warfare, Beatz and Club Innovation to name a few.

By 2003 Shadowplay had moved from his hometown to Brighton, opening a record shop there and establishing himself on the local scene playing at events like Sabotage, Carbon and Metalheadz. He played pirates like Profile, Phonic and Codesouth, before retiring from the scene in 2007, after closing down the shop to concentrate on raising his young family.

In 2015, a good friend and up/coming producer Vital Link persuaded DJ Shadowplay to put in a guest appearance on his radio show playing old skool jungle, again the bug hit, spurring him to come out of retirement and start his own show playing old skool on onlyoldskoolradio.com every Friday and Saturday. 2016 saw a family holiday turn into a chance semi-tour of Spain, and an equally chance phone call with Mark X from Kemet Records led to Shadowplay being drawn back into the new jungle scene again fully, and leading to his first vinyl release when he collaborated with Vital Link on ‘The New Dawn EP’ (Kemet). Now involved with his close friend J Majik and his label Infrared Records, you can catch Shadowplay every Friday and Saturday on radio, as well as upcoming events.

Home of my own mixes - predominantly jungle/hardcore with the odd bit of D&B, plus eclectic sample-digging, breaks and hip-hop, techno & electronica. 

Pre-2001, all mixes vinyl; Post-2016, all mixes digital (DJay 2); Post-2018, Ableton Live. Why? Why not?
I've got an old skool DJ's mentality, early influences ranging from Sublove, Ratty, Randall & Hype to Coldcut, DJ Juice, MK & Primo.  In the early 00s I turned my back on D&B, retired my turntables in favour of family/work commitments, and got into funk, soul, reggae and so on... a lot of this driven by curiosity around the sample roots of hardcore and jungle.  Forward another decade and an early mid-life crisis saw me messing around with virtual decks on my phone, and later acquiring a vinyl ripper, with one vision in mind: making mixes.
Although I'm partial to the odd DJay or vinyl mix when I get the chance, the progression into Ableton Live was a simple means to an end.  My ideas stretch further than the limitations of my physical collection and real-time mixing, and by sequencing I can pick, choose, chip away and structure mixes at my leisure. Which I do... a lot :)

Wait, there's more ... an absolute stack of classic golden era/old skool hip-hop/turntablism, jungle and d&b, hardcore, techno and house mixes retrieved from my dusty tape & CD archives.  This includes (by my reckoning) the most exhaustive collections of classic Full Cycle and Sublove Galaxy Radio shows, live Ruffneck Ting jungle tapes, loads of studio & compilation mixes, all manner of rave tapes, and so on.
