"Instead of doing yet another promo mix that incorporates a song or two from our new album, I thought it would be fun for me & Phill to each do a 30 minute mix of Hip Hop from our respective areas. I'm from Southampton, and since that's not a very big place I thought it would be more fitting to play some of my favourite old UK Hip Hop records. Philadelphia always had a healthy Hip Hop scene that boasted famous artists such as DJ Jazzy Jeff & Fresh Prince, Cash Money & Marvelous and Steady B just to name a few. Welcome to New Orleans: A tribute to New Orleans Funk and Soul is the work of New Orleans native, DJ Personify. Raised in the Crescent City, the die-hard Hip-Hop fan learned early on that many of the samples he discovered originated in New Orleans. He soon became infatuated with the Funk and Soul music recorded there and has spent the better part of the last twenty years immersed in the culture of those records. Personify’s passion for New Orleans' music and culture extends to the present day and is manifested in this DJ mix masterpiece. Lovingly compiled, all of the artists featured on the mix are native to New Orleans with the exception of Hugo Montenegro who plays alongside Al Hirt (a New Orleans native) and The Headhunters, who are included here because of their work with Bill Summers (a life-long New Orleanian). All songs and samples used on this mix were recorded from vinyl sources. Turntablism: The art of manipulating the sounds on records to create new music.

In the early 90s Hip Hop DJs often found themselves taking a back seat while rappers had the spotlight, but behind the scenes they continued to push the boundaries. By the mid-90s scratching and beat juggling had been taken to a whole new level, enabling turntablist DJs to take centre stage - because what they were doing was completely mind blowing! The world DMC and ITF championships helped to give turntablism a global platform, so for any up and coming DJ learning to scratch, it was an inspirational time. During that period you could argue turntablism redefined the element of DJing as the corner stone of Hip Hop culture. Around 2002 digital DJ equipment like Traktor and Serato became very popular, and nowadays you rarely see turntablists rocking DJ battle sets on a pair of decks with real records. Thats not to say they can’t tear shit up, it’s just the equipment is different. In terms of the golden era of turntablism though, this mix represents where it’s at. Hope you enjoy. Peace.

I was recently asked to play a night called Classic Material in London. The idea for the club is to give each month over to a year from Hip Hop's past and only play tracks released during it. I was given 1989 and this set was all done from original vinyl, clicks, jumps and all.

Home of my own mixes - predominantly jungle/hardcore with the odd bit of D&B, plus eclectic sample-digging, breaks and hip-hop, techno & electronica. 

Pre-2001, all mixes vinyl; Post-2016, all mixes digital (DJay 2); Post-2018, Ableton Live. Why? Why not?
I've got an old skool DJ's mentality, early influences ranging from Sublove, Ratty, Randall & Hype to Coldcut, DJ Juice, MK & Primo.  In the early 00s I turned my back on D&B, retired my turntables in favour of family/work commitments, and got into funk, soul, reggae and so on... a lot of this driven by curiosity around the sample roots of hardcore and jungle.  Forward another decade and an early mid-life crisis saw me messing around with virtual decks on my phone, and later acquiring a vinyl ripper, with one vision in mind: making mixes.
Although I'm partial to the odd DJay or vinyl mix when I get the chance, the progression into Ableton Live was a simple means to an end.  My ideas stretch further than the limitations of my physical collection and real-time mixing, and by sequencing I can pick, choose, chip away and structure mixes at my leisure. Which I do... a lot :)
