Bass Scoops Radio in conversation with Catherine Backhouse, the artist known as Xylitol. I first ever  heard Xylitol this year playing live  at StrangeBrew in Bristol as part of the Tudor Acid’s Electro Café night. OMG  was this a live set  to behold!!! , absolute amen fuelled  breakbeat tearout bizness paired  with lush ambient sonics. As soon as Xylitol came off stage I rushed over to talk her into an interview  for Bass Scoops which she kindly agreed to do. In this show we have mixed in some  standout tracks and  we get to hear about the Krautrock - Jungle connection , the technical detail behind her fantastic productions, the Eastern European electronica radio show and more. We finish with an extra special mix of dubs and VIP’s that Xylitol recorded  especially for Bass Scoops Radio. Bass Scoops Radio in conversation with Joel Harrison, the artist currently known as Drumskull. Joel has been on the Bass Scoops interview wish list since the beginning. To my shame I didn’t know about his earlier work under his own name until I started doing the deep research into the Drumskull back catalog but wow what a discovery to make. You know when you hear a dance track that feels just right for the floor, check out Joels work and hear what I’m ranting about. Objectively this shouldn’t be a surprise as through the Drumskull releases you can hear an artist that knows his song writing chops, this isn’t just technical ability on a DAW, it’s proper musicianship applied to modern bass music.

1993 Vinyl Mix

Kloke joins the Run it Red label for a stunning 4 track jungle ep. Fresh from dropping several excellent releases on Future Retro, !K7 and several other labels as well as collaborations with Tim Reaper,  Kloke brings the 93 darkside style into the year 2023 for Echo Chamber Sound's sub label.
These tracks have the perfect balance of rawness and intricacy that Kloke is known for and could be mistaken for lost dubs played at Rage or the Bluenote sessions with only a cassette recording to tell the tale. Luckily they are brand new tunes, crisply mastered at The Exchange and pressed on a 4 track 12inch. Label owner LQ reworks the title tune Dark Knight with signature low end power and dubwise sonic manipulation.

Home of my own mixes - predominantly jungle/hardcore with the odd bit of D&B, plus eclectic sample-digging, breaks and hip-hop, techno & electronica. 

Pre-2001, all mixes vinyl; Post-2016, all mixes digital (DJay 2); Post-2018, Ableton Live. Why? Why not?
I've got an old skool DJ's mentality, early influences ranging from Sublove, Ratty, Randall & Hype to Coldcut, DJ Juice, MK & Primo.  In the early 00s I turned my back on D&B, retired my turntables in favour of family/work commitments, and got into funk, soul, reggae and so on... a lot of this driven by curiosity around the sample roots of hardcore and jungle.  Forward another decade and an early mid-life crisis saw me messing around with virtual decks on my phone, and later acquiring a vinyl ripper, with one vision in mind: making mixes.
Although I'm partial to the odd DJay or vinyl mix when I get the chance, the progression into Ableton Live was a simple means to an end.  My ideas stretch further than the limitations of my physical collection and real-time mixing, and by sequencing I can pick, choose, chip away and structure mixes at my leisure. Which I do... a lot :)

Wait, there's more ... an absolute stack of classic golden era/old skool hip-hop/turntablism, jungle and d&b, hardcore, techno and house mixes retrieved from my dusty tape & CD archives.  This includes (by my reckoning) the most exhaustive collections of classic Full Cycle and Sublove Galaxy Radio shows, live Ruffneck Ting jungle tapes, loads of studio & compilation mixes, all manner of rave tapes, and so on.
