V Classic was an appetiser. Today I officially have 5K followers, and so I have a duo* of Platinum Breakz mixes for you all. 

Was great to rediscover this one in its extended CD form. As a paid-up Headz fan I already owned half of the content when the LP dropped in 1996, and so mentally pigeonholed it more as 'the album with Unofficial Ghost on it' than anything else. Listening back and structuring this mix 25 years later, I've realised what an exceptionally well-balanced and atmospheric collection this is, with many lighter moments that contrast with the filthy exclusives such as Armoured D and The Nocturnal.

Revisiting the Headz back catalogue left me itching to dig deeper and so I've curated an alternative mix: Platinum Breakz Inverted. Same era, same artist roster, different tunes ... show some love to this bad boy and it shall be yours by Xmas <3

Selectabwoy's Platinum Breakz Mix [5K Followers 1/2]

Second of the 5K celebrations, final mix of the year: a re-imagined, alternate Platinum Breakz ... inverted, if you will. Forgive the Tenet reference :)

The starting point here was Lemon D's This Is LA, a bonus track from the US PB1 release, which would have made it into the first mix had I realised in time. Choosing the rest was a piece of piss, but that 'exclusive' element provided by Unofficial Ghost et al was missing - so the selection is bolstered with a couple of unreleased dubs that emerged more recently on Infra-Red and Deep Jungle (Your Sound VIP is a no-brainer, and I'm sure Another Dimension was  destined for Headz). Add to that a few Razor's Edge joints and some classic Rufige Kru flavour - Manslaughter '96 (cheekily borrowed from Reinforced, as it first appeared on the flip of the Metropolis dubplate), and the mighty Fury from Saturnz Return - and we're good to go. Let's skirt over the fact Pressin' On came out on PB2, Hidden Agenda deserve a couple of spots this time around. The final line-up:

After six years of graft I finally hit a million plays on my profile, so here's something special that I've been sat on for a while. Easily one of my favourite mixes from the pandemic era, Astro Jungle Part 1 (inspired by/cunningly plagiarised Aldi-style from @kolanut's Space Mix) was recorded back in October 2020 and left to mature gracefully, like a fine cosmic claret. Double Up Sound feat. Bronx on Orbital Radio 28/10/22

I was honoured to be asked by Mantra and Double O to warm up room  1 at Rupture's 16th birthday last month on 19th November, alongside a full line up of some of the best DJ's, MC's and producers in the scene!
It was daunting, to say the least, but I did it and, after a wave of pure anxiety I came off the turntables smiling and proud that I had done a pretty good job! :D
 
It's a little late, but, for those that missed it or couldn't make it, here is my 93/94 all vinyl vibe promo mix that I recorded at home a month before the gig..needless to say I was shitting my pants; of course, I changed a few tunes along the way running up to the gig!
Music is such a HUGE part of my life, I love it and can't live without it. I am so compassionate about music it that it sometimes consumes me, to the point of intense worry that I feel I should stop mixing..but I have turned a corner after Rupture and I have gained that passion again <3

Two more rather excellent jungle compilations for you. First up this little gem from Jumpin' and Pumpin's excellent Jungle Tekno series. It's the only one I own on vinyl, and I must have played Presha 3 off this a gazillion times alone (at least before I picked up the 12" second-hand). Each volume is pretty solid, but for me the balance of tunes on this one is just right - excellent atmospheric cuts from Skanna, 4 Horsemen, Sub Sequence and Doc Scott's Champion Sound remix (surely one of the best reinterpretations in jungle history?) balanced against the heavier IQ amen workouts. Couple of decent exclusives too. Love it.

Final mix of the year is my take on the mighty Jungle Massive 4: Jungle Versus The Hardsteppers, the last instalment of the legendary series from Labello Blanco/PWL International ... big ups to scene legend Jimmy Low (aka Macka Brown/MC Kann) and the artical OJ himself, Pete Waterman...

Four years ago I did my own festive mix of Jungle Massive Volume 2 (https://on.soundcloud.com/kadto). Just four days after that I had the files set up to have a crack at Volume 4, but it's taken all this time to get my shit together sufficiently to tackle the 32 tracks on offer. I've had the official Gachet & Micky Finn mixtapes up for a while, so why bother? Well - for one, the mixes themselves aren't without their flaws ... but beyond that, I wanted to mash all the tunes up together in a continuous mix, rather than observing the original hardstep/jungle split. I'm not sure it ever made sense to me really - I guess you can retrospectively substitute 'drum & bass' for 'hardstep' in the sense that there's more ragga/soundclash flavour in the junglist half, but nowadays this is splitting hairs. It's a jungle compilation pure and simple, and easily one of the best going. 

Man, there's some brilliant tunes on it. Plenty of specials: 'Slow Down', 'Back To My Roots', '9mm' and 'Theme From Daddy Armshouse' stand out, all absolutely wicked and genuinely exclusive to the LP. (It just occurred to me that - unless you know otherwise - Nookie's effort is the earliest example of swingbeat/clownstep, a slice of pure class built around the b-line from Aaron Neville's 'Hercules'). Add to that a shit-ton of excellent VIPs including the superb Sky (DJ Kane VIP) from Just Jungle, Monk's Nu Jack City, Marv Cain's Gunman, Aphrodite's Bomber and MTS's Baad Boy Sound. Beyond that, the 'regular' tunes in there hold several of my all-time faves among their number - Steppaz Anthem! Vintage Wash! Roll On, Crisis, Legalise, The Dreamer ...and then Final Chapta and Babylon Trace Part 2... Labello weren't messing around, this is a filler-free zone. The selection also forced me into doing the Arsonist/Fire mash-up I've been daydreaming about for years, keep an ear out for that one :)

Ah, Jungle Renegades 2: an authentic selection of mid-1995 jungle/D&B curated by the one and only DJ Randall, representing a great cross-section of artists and labels of the time... just check that tracklist :) 

Following on from the superb Volume 1 LP (mix finally done... here https://soundcloud.com/selectabwoy/selectabwoys-jungle-renegades-1-mix) and the preceding Renegade Selector 1 & 2, the Jungle Renegades comps were 4LP pressings and louder than most; essential for fledgling junglists on a budget, and importantly the only place that mere mortals could find exclusive gems such as L Double & Liccle D's superb Rasta Sound and Ray Keith's reesed-up Sing Time VIP.

The Randall mixtape of Volume 2 is one of those elusive items that I can just about recall hearing; the internet has hardly any trace of it aside from the discogs listing. I'm sure I had a dub of Olly's cassette but it's one of a handful that I inexplicably lost years ago, so I've assembled my own from the CD flacs. Been on my to-do list for ages, hope I've done it justice.

Home of my own mixes - predominantly jungle/hardcore with the odd bit of D&B, plus eclectic sample-digging, breaks and hip-hop, techno & electronica. 

Pre-2001, all mixes vinyl; Post-2016, all mixes digital (DJay 2); Post-2018, Ableton Live. Why? Why not?
I've got an old skool DJ's mentality, early influences ranging from Sublove, Ratty, Randall & Hype to Coldcut, DJ Juice, MK & Primo.  In the early 00s I turned my back on D&B, retired my turntables in favour of family/work commitments, and got into funk, soul, reggae and so on... a lot of this driven by curiosity around the sample roots of hardcore and jungle.  Forward another decade and an early mid-life crisis saw me messing around with virtual decks on my phone, and later acquiring a vinyl ripper, with one vision in mind: making mixes.
Although I'm partial to the odd DJay or vinyl mix when I get the chance, the progression into Ableton Live was a simple means to an end.  My ideas stretch further than the limitations of my physical collection and real-time mixing, and by sequencing I can pick, choose, chip away and structure mixes at my leisure. Which I do... a lot :)

Wait, there's more ... an absolute stack of classic golden era/old skool hip-hop/turntablism, jungle and d&b, hardcore, techno and house mixes retrieved from my dusty tape & CD archives.  This includes (by my reckoning) the most exhaustive collections of classic Full Cycle and Sublove Galaxy Radio shows, live Ruffneck Ting jungle tapes, loads of studio & compilation mixes, all manner of rave tapes, and so on.
