Following a break from the usual Friday release schedule, here's untitled mix number nine. Summer vibes done my way with vintage gems alongside more recent tings. A special mention for Law & Kola Nut's 'Flow State' from last summer ... took a while to fully appreciate its nuances, for me it's up there with the best early Full Cycle rollers. Modern classic.

This one started out purely as a vehicle for the guilty pleasure that is Robostep VIP, then evolved into a mix of D&B, jungle, techstep and autonomic/halftime (the latter being most refreshing). My choice was a late 1995 set from Bryan Gee, from a tape pack called 'Euphoria - Jungle Flavour'(https://on.soundcloud.com/1zeSR). Anyone who knows me properly knows how much I love that set.. Rinsed it since I was a kid.. Did my best live on the night to give it the respect it deserves, I'm no Bryan Gee though clearly.. Energy 1058 - Live Tapepack Takeover - 22/5/23

Unable to track down the official Grooverider mixtape, I made my own instead :) 

Somehow I was oblivious to the irony of the title, but my man Lex (@jungleteknoftw) reasonably pointed out that this 1994 compilation isn't hardstep, indeed it seems to be a premature coining of the phrase a year too early; but what it sure as hell is, is an authentic snapshot of the wide variety of music hammering the dancefloors back in the golden year of jungle. From the laid-back style of Bukem and Alex Reece, through more hardcore/ravey vibes from the Awesome camp, dark and deadly business from Dillinja, Photek and Rider himself, and then Tom & Jerry, L Double, Mental Power and Brainkillers serving up the 'jungle' jungle side of things... selection-wise, this has it all. 

It's not without its flaws - skirting over the artwork, the vinyl pressing wasn't the loudest (as I can attest) and lacked the Noodles & Wonder exclusive; tracks on all versions are edited under the 5-minute mark (I had to replace the last two, couldn't cope with having just the first half of 'Music' as the closer)... and I coulda done without the SS tune, that vocal gets on my tits. But none of that really matters at all, I have very fond memories of this comp and the time it harks back to.

Home of my own mixes - predominantly jungle/hardcore with the odd bit of D&B, plus eclectic sample-digging, breaks and hip-hop, techno & electronica. 

Pre-2001, all mixes vinyl; Post-2016, all mixes digital (DJay 2); Post-2018, Ableton Live. Why? Why not?
I've got an old skool DJ's mentality, early influences ranging from Sublove, Ratty, Randall & Hype to Coldcut, DJ Juice, MK & Primo.  In the early 00s I turned my back on D&B, retired my turntables in favour of family/work commitments, and got into funk, soul, reggae and so on... a lot of this driven by curiosity around the sample roots of hardcore and jungle.  Forward another decade and an early mid-life crisis saw me messing around with virtual decks on my phone, and later acquiring a vinyl ripper, with one vision in mind: making mixes.
Although I'm partial to the odd DJay or vinyl mix when I get the chance, the progression into Ableton Live was a simple means to an end.  My ideas stretch further than the limitations of my physical collection and real-time mixing, and by sequencing I can pick, choose, chip away and structure mixes at my leisure. Which I do... a lot :)

Wait, there's more ... an absolute stack of classic golden era/old skool hip-hop/turntablism, jungle and d&b, hardcore, techno and house mixes retrieved from my dusty tape & CD archives.  This includes (by my reckoning) the most exhaustive collections of classic Full Cycle and Sublove Galaxy Radio shows, live Ruffneck Ting jungle tapes, loads of studio & compilation mixes, all manner of rave tapes, and so on.
