Fldexp - W(h)ay [SS22]

Makoto Inoue and Yasushi Yamashita's Inoyama Land project spans nearly four decades, still active to this day. A portmanteau of their family names, the “Land” of Inoyama hovers between imagined mythical space and concrete reality, extending beyond physical releases into installations, site-specific sound design and theatre scores. After their famed Haruomi Hosono-produced 1983 release Danzindan-Pojidon, the duo became involved in the budding environmental music business that was taking shape in Tokyo during the development boom of the asset bubble - working directly with figures like Hiroshi Yoshimura (with whom they developed sound design for the International Stadium in Yokohama) and Takashi Sekiguchi (Bamboo from Asia). This collection expands upon their sound heard on Kankyō Ongaku: Japanese Ambient, Environmental & New Age Music 1980-1990 (LITA 167) to illuminate material that is even lesser known outside of Japan - some of it presented publicly for the first time.

Working initially with Munetaka Tanaka's Sound Process Design (an acoustic consulting company formed by Tanaka with Satoshi Ashikawa, before Ashikawa's tragic death in 1983), their commissioned work mirrors the sound world first fleshed out on Danzindan: chiming synthesizers, pastoral hues, childhood memory – all pulsing with a distant, emotional resonance. This material – culled from limited CD issues of the material on Tanaka's Crescent label, Kazunao Nagata's Transonic Records and self-released CDRs – presents a window into this process, illustrating how Inoue and Yamashita's idiosyncratic musical identity gelled perfectly with all of the disparate environments of their commissions. Included is music written for the Kankaku (Sense) Museum in Miyagi, an exhibit on slime molds at the National Museum of Nature and Science in Ueno park, the 1977 stage performance Collecting Net (which also included music that would later become Danzindan-Pojidon) and their score for a Tokyo re-staging of New York avant-theatre pioneer Richard Foreman's post-modern stage piece Egyptology.

Finetune – WATER (feat. Arseniy Trofim) [digital]

In what seems to be a never ending year of misfortune, 2020 offers us a gift in the form of ‘The Inner Space’ LP from Moscow based artist, designer, DJ and music producer Michael Dop, also known by many for his live moniker, Finetune and affiliation with the Slowdance label and event organisation. The LP will be spread across vinyl, and digital (free download on Michael’s Bandcamp) in two parts. The full package will be available on streaming platforms across the board. An immerseful experience that not only strains the boundaries of sound, but also visually as Dop fuses his eclectic talents with sound and art. The artwork for some of his finest work to date is signed off with a personal feature from the man himself, created using 300+ record sleeves using them as a canvas to create one wholesome image. The Finetune project was something Michael initiated in 2018, creating poetry via his modular and fm synthesizers, upright piano, sampers, gong, drum machines, groove boxes, and different percussion instruments.

Breathing elegant life into the ‘The Inner Space’ LP is the opening track, ‘Source’, a delicately arranged track with a pulse synonymous of a heart beat, and trickling water, soothing and allowing to find an inner sanctuary.

Also, available on Bandcamp digitally (free download) will be a selection of five more tracks in which Michael Dop continues his mystical themes, sculpting an entirely different dream-like state with each and every song. You will find, ‘Afterimage’, ‘Cas’ featuring Arseniy Trofim, ‘Oblaka’, ‘Oscillation in the Atmosphere (Second way)’ and ‘Water’ also featuring Aresniy, who has played an integral role in Dop’s musical experience, an extremely talented pianist who passes on his knowledge, having been Michael’s teacher in this area of expertise it is fitting Trofim makes an appearance in this body of work. 

A transcending and moving piece from the Moscow based artist, ticking all of the boxes for modern day culture and art. Imaginative and flamboyant sounds from the off, weaved perfectly together with the artistic ethos Finetune embodies on the overall project, melding with his artistic and actual persona, Michael Dop.
