As I closed out my reflections on the last 12 months, riding through many positive personal and other emotional vicissitudes, I realized that not many things in the world make us move, think, and feel more than music. Seeing so many talented friends across different parts of the industry reminds me that though we come from different backgrounds, we're all working to make the music world inspiring for creators of all types. I feel so grateful to be able to contribute music that made me happy and hopeful in the last 365 days. 

Reflecting on where my ear and interests currently are, the records included in this mix kept coming back to me, and I've sat with them for an entire year (Thanks for your patience, Alex). After 2-3 months of complete mixing absence, I was overwhelmed with a creative wave earlier this week and recorded the mix. 

It's all over the place, in all its roughness and imperfection, but I am super proud of it and admit I listened to it many times. ❤️

Amsterdam-based DJ Nèna crafts warm, layered sets that blend 2010s UK techno and bass, house, kuduro, reggaeton, amongst a broad range of underground electronic styles. Her selections balance the smooth and the gritty, experimenting with contrasts in temperature and texture. While deeply rooted in Amsterdam’s underground, Nèna continually looks outward to places like Miami and Brussels, drawing significant inspiration from Lisbon’s club scene, in her family’s homeland of Portugal.

With a background in philosophy, Nèna approaches music as a way to reframe and reinterpret sonic elements, placing them in contexts that reveal unexpected connections. Her sets explore patterns that give familiar sounds fresh meaning, always engaging with the atmosphere and social landscape of her surroundings.

From intimate spaces like Garage Noord to larger venues like De School, and festivals such as Dekmantel and Zeezout, Nèna’s sets are known for their careful interplay of movement and atmosphere. Her RRFM radio series, All I Do Is Apricate, offers a sun-soaked soundtrack with special guests, showcasing her ever-evolving approach to sound.

About the mix:

I really wanted to incorporate Deadbeat from the 2001 Eardrum album Side Effects. This track provided the elements that serve as a guide to the rest of the mix. Dubby, drummy, and moody.

I discovered Ikeaboy in 2018, featuring his tracks on my Facebook page, Selections with Eva. Though life and procrastination meant sporadic chats, we stayed in touch. As I prepared to relaunch all my project this year, Damian was the first artist I thought of. He kindly shared 15 incredible unreleased tracks, two of which I’m thrilled to feature here on SoundCloud and YouTube.

Damian explains, ''This track has undergone several mix updates, though the core song has remained unchanged. Most of the percussion comes from a well-worn Zoom sampler called the SampleTrack, which adds a pleasing sense of degradation to the sound. The string progression features microtonal tuning, creating a vibe that teeters between unsettling and epic. I became obsessed with turning it into a functional track. To me, it evokes the spirit of early '90s experimental trance music, with its unconventional element choices—like early '90s trance colliding with the imagery of a massive, rusting oil tanker abandoned on a desolate beach.''

Since 1999, Damian has crafted hardware-based techno and electro, releasing on Dublin’s iconic D1 label (and others) and experimenting with darker sounds on Invisibleagent. His music has been hailed as “more bounce than a pogo stick” (The Wire) and “a deep cover curio of oddball techno” (Juno).

He has also collaborated on glitch and electro-acoustic projects, performed at global festivals, and has been teaching music production since 2008. 

His sound is raw, bold, dope, and utterly unique.

Damian explains, ''This track is built around some textured noise as a riff and something that barely qualifies as melody played on a contrastingly smooth soft sound. I kept the percussion mostly propulsive with a foley noise I created adding more texture. I often think of my tracks as either describing machines or places, this is somewhere in between, maybe a machine exploring a space. The other sounds in the track are like encounters on the landscape of this ‘place’. The big, oversized chord drop is meant to feel like a sudden beam of light breaking through or a corner turned to where a huge vista can be seen''

Appendix.files welcomes Clima, the alias of Berlin-based producer Samuel Stevenson, with the release of Transient State, a deeply immersive four-track EP that bridges atmospheric soundscapes and experimental rhythms. Drawing on a diverse range of influences from IDM to dub techno and combining ambient textures with the low-end weight of UK bass, Clima crafts a unique sonic palette that feels both deeply personal and universally resonant.

Building on the groundwork laid by his 2022 self-released EP Losing Phase, Transient State continues Clima’s exploration of layered field recordings, tactile sound design, and processed percussive elements. Each track offers a nuanced interplay between ‘hard’ and ‘soft’ sonic textures—digital percussion is tempered by analogue warmth, and fragmented rhythms find harmony within emotive ambient frameworks.

The EP’s standout moments reflect Clima’s wide-ranging influences and his ability to navigate the delicate tension between contrasting elements. On you(ether), Clima combines warm basslines, processed samples and scattered, broken percussion to create an ethereal soundscape. Meanwhile, 023 showcases Clima’s skill at merging field recordings, ambient textures, and IDM-inspired rhythms, with heavy bass and a half-time pulse that straddles the line between contemplative listening and dancefloor energy. Tracks like mutant dub and st highlight Clima’s ability to balance fractured club energy with introspective, atmospheric sound design, offering moments that feel equally suited to intimate listening or larger sound system settings.

Some tracks just stick with you — and Paul Walter has a knack for making them.

In 2019, I moved to Mannheim briefly and quickly immersed myself in its rich underground scene. One night, deep in the depths of an after-hours at the legendary Boeck, a hypnotic 12-minute minimal gem stopped me in my tracks. As Sedee played to a dedicated few, an unreleased masterpiece filled the room. It was so damn soothing for that early morning. I moved closer to the deck, poured another gin tonic for courage, and asked Dave for the track ID. It was an unreleased Paul Walter track, a producer I didn't know back then.

The track finally saw the light of day in 2023, released on the Austrian label Do Easy Records.

DJ, promoter, and Invisible City team member, Milch is a fixture of the Toronto scene. A resident at numerous local clubs and bars in Toronto, she also plays regularly internationally at many revered underground establishments in Europe. 

Her eclectic taste has lead her to become a versatile dj; from the cocktail lounge to the sweaty basement, whether it's balearic downtempo, campy synthpop, hypnotic tribal, sleazy new beat, or hard hitting industrial, Milch always delivers a sense of quirky playfulness and love of 1980s influences.

For this mix, Milch delivers an hour of late 80s - early 90s house; from balearic, to jackin', to acid, from all around the globe!

Eva has a knack for finding beauty in unexpected places: a glint of light on a wall, an old record abandoned on a Berlin sidewalk, or a track hidden deep in a dusty Discogs listing. Her musical world is fueled by relentless curiosity, shaped over years spent chasing sounds and inspiration wherever they appear. This led her to launch Selections with Eva in 2015, starting as a Facebook page to share discoveries and connect with fellow music obsessives. The platform quickly stood out from the sea of digger channels emerging at the time, thanks to her impeccable and deeply personal curation spanning everything from 90s hardcore to the deepest house grooves.

A decade on, Eva still shares music regularly, though she’s traded Facebook for Instagram and SoundCloud. Both pages remain a goldmine of new tracks and mixes often spotlighting emerging artists, which is a commitment that runs through all of Eva’s work. Special mention goes to her monthly Chicks on Decks SoundCloud playlist, showcasing online mixes by female DJs who are, in her own words, “continuously pushing boundaries and redefining the electronic music landscape.”

You might expect someone with such dedication to be constantly behind the decks. In reality, Eva’s live appearances and podcasts are rare, which makes her contribution to our series all the special. In this mix she explores the deep, dubby corners of her collection, delivering a fresh take on the minimal and dub house sound that defined the late 00s.
