In Japan, the last day of the year is called 'Ōmisoka,' and the bell-like sound, the 'Joya no Kane,' featured in this song, is rung 108 times at temples throughout the country on the midnight of New Year's Eve. Watching the 'first sunrise' on New Year's Day is also considered auspicious, and while not everyone participates, this custom is still observed.
