The Space G (aka Russell Scott Birkin) 
(October 13 1977 - March 3 2011) -

His Music and Legacy...

Space G was diagnosed as having a mental illness... and it must be said that Genius and Insanity share the same border.. This struggle and his creativity made for a TRUE Artist.. SUFFERING from the NEED to CREATE...

Space G was an Australian Hip-Hop artist. In the tradition of Daniel Johnston and Wesley Willis. A musical Genius...diagnosed with Schizo-Effective Manic Bipolar Disorder.

He first went by the name "With It', when he first got into Rapping in 1996, which was later changed to "Grey Matter", and then finally,in around 2002, to (the) Space G..

He sadly passed away in 2011.

(1977-2011)

Space G was a hip-hop artist from Adelaide, South Australia. 
Born in Ardrossan in the York peninsula, Space G started his rapping in a remand centre (also known as juvenile hall or Prison) during 1996, writing down his lyrics forming a persona called Grey Matter.
 
He did not perform his lyrics while locked up there, only sharing his written word, which was actually encouraged by his fellow inmates. After being released from his incarceration he became a performer of hip-hop amongst friends and stood out as a talented lyricist. This was always performed in social situations and would not be recorded until 2003. 

Space G became his new name with a new body of written work. When given the chance to record a demo in 2003 Space G jumped to the chance and he laid down the tracks of what would be a classic underground collection of Aussie hip-hop. The music was recorded on ANZAC Highway, Plympton SA in a Polites flat engineered by Sean Ansell. (Sayne Topiks)

The recordings he made at this time stand up to be his most solid and influential work. The area included other musicians who contributed to the keyboarding and backup vocals. Space G created music, which expressed his fascination with space, youth culture, drug use, violence and his life story. These demo recordings had an outsider music quality that made his music unique. 
Descriptions of his music often include "unlike anything I have ever heard in hip-hop", "wacky", "fun", "old school" and "stripped down". Creativity in this period influenced the musicians who collaborated with him. The unnamed demo album was popular and played during parties in the local area.

The style of music is in the spirit of other 'outsider' musicians Daniel Johnston and Wesley Willis. The hip-hop influences for Space G include Cyprus Hill, Warren G, Hilltop Hoods, Coolio and NWA. Artistic output by Space G is not limited to music, he is an accomplished visual artist. "Fireworks Fly" is available online for download on youtube. The track "Boogie For Free" is considered one of the heaviest bass tracks in history.

Space G succeeded in creating his own music but he also influenced a particular music scene in Adelaide. The music recorded during 2003 has influenced the sounds of current musicians in South Australia. The artist continued to write lyrics and occasionally record tracks. He is the subject of a documentary film in progress.

Space G died on March 3rd 2011 of Diabetic Ketoacidosis, having never being diagnosed as Diabetic.
