Just some unfinished experimental Diva patches, to show it doesn't only do Moog and Blade Runner patches. Extreme modified and hybrid FM/AM sync sweeps, quantized modulations, sound FX, digital madness, extreme filter FM, etc. I wanted to edit the session down but Cool Edit threw a wobbly and won't let me cut from it.

The Minibrute's highpass filter has a very liquid quality to it, as demonstrated by this sequence I stumbled across which seems to embody the sound of a dripping tap.

All the formant work in this sound comes from the oscillator. The filter is simply cutting away some highs so my ears don't bleed. I set up a simple VOSIM-like patch made out of sync and ringmod in the Digital oscillator, then used VoiceStack parameter to modulate the formant characteristics, and applied unison. At the beginning you hear me starting with one voice, then adding two, three, etc up to the maximum of six.

Interestingly, this bass has a very DX-ish character, yet there is no FM going on in the patch at all - it's all sync, ringmod, and unison difference modulation.

3ee sent me his recent soundpack for Zebra, so I decided to have a little jam with them. This is all made of presets from his Battery Leak soundset, apart from the drums, which are from his Level 3-E chiptune soundset, both for Zebra. They're mostly raw, with a bit of chorus, delay, rhythmic gate and master buss compression, and the sounds are unedited. The final mix was edited in Cool Edit Pro to add a few flourishes here and there.

Overall, I find it a bit strange using other people's presets, so this was an interesting exercise.  I quite like the groove I got going here and I might expand the track in an acid direction with a remix. The Battery Leak soundset is full of bright, raspy and juicy DCO-style presets, all based on a unique set of wavetables emulating phase-locked layered oscillators with a bit of a digital character. His chiptune pack also comes recommended - if I didn't make my own sounds, I'd be all over his presets* ;) He's particularly good at nailing the classic sound effects of the NES.

Another demo for a Zebra soundset, this time Pixelations by Zen Sound. Quite an oddball and unique set of sounds, in my estimation spanning the genres of chiptune and illbient/ambient. There are a lot of sound effects type patches, wild rhythmic stuff, experimental and glitchy chip sounds, and the like. Definitely not a bread and butter soundset, but perfect for chip inspired soundscapes.

All sounds are patches from the soundset, with no tweaking and minimal mixing.

Just a five minute tweak, with and without the distortion pedal, which really brings the sound alive and levels it out, allowing you to use the volume differences created by the Accent knob, to get different colours of distortion.

Morphing In The 90's

Inspired by the sounds of the Korg Wavestation, I've had a go at making pad sounds where vastly differing waveforms are crossfaded together to create slowly sizzling padscapes. Mostly this is done by setting up wild wave modulations with the spectral and waveform modulations, and then reducing the "resolution" control until the sound is frozen into regular snapshots which crossfade into eachother.

Oscillators, who could live without them, eh? They go up, they go down. At audio speeds. Ain't that a thing?

This is a tour of the Roland JP-8000's oscillator section, mostly focussing on oscillator 1. These tones are all created with one oscillator and it's parameters (which are unique to each shape). I also use the filter a bit to showcase the sound. This oscillator has a lot of unique waveforms it can make, and interesting ways to change them, including it's main selling point, the supersaw (a special blend of 7 sawtooth waves with variable detune and the smoothest sound.

The second oscillator is featured at the end. This has only three waveforms, but is capable of oscillator sync, ring modulation, x-mod (FM), and PWM on the pulse wave.
