I attached two JRF contact microphones inside the hollow of this wonderful old Oak tree to see if I could pick up any bug sounds. I was amazed to hear that it was completely full of Death Watch Beetle. They knock their heads on the tree to attract a mate.

This recording won the Coveted Wildlife Sound Recording Society's “Silver Fox” Trophy, the Non-Avian award and a first in class 2: Species in the 2012 WSRS competition. It also won first prize in the 'sounds of nature' category in the IWT/IARC/CIMES 2013 competition awarded by the International Federation of Sound Hunters.

Early dawn chorus with distant birds and various frogs. Recorded at 5.54am on the 30th of January 2011 in north Brazil in the Xixuau area.  Picture is from Pixabay.com.    Recording 2118.

Early Dawn Chorus - Xixuau Brazil

All around the pond, dry leaves on the ground are rustling. Slight movements reveal frogs making a slow progress towards the pond, where hundreds of their conspecifics already are establishing themselves. These are common frogs, Rana temporaria, emerging from damp places where they have spent the winter. During most of the year, frogs do anything to stay hidden from predators. Their appareance make for a great camouflage and their habits equally so … apart from their behaviour at the pond. Some males cannot wait until reaching the pond before making a stop and start croaking in the direction of the pond. If the rest of the frog’s year is characterized by silence and stealth, they now try to make as great an impression as frogly possible, croaking their hearts out in order to impress upon a female. 

This recording is made above water and you will hear the massive chorus mixed with the splashes of moving frogs.

Early morning at Paquette Lake, Cape Breton Highlands, Nova Scotia. I was recording the dawn chorus over the lake using my Telinga SSM connected to an Olympus LS-100. The tripod was just a few feet from the water's edge. A female moose and her calf approach the microphone... listen to hear the whole story.

Taiga - the great forests of the far north, the most extensive habitat on earth.

Here the landscape is vast; a mosaic of conifer forest and sodden peatbogs, threaded with streams and lakes.

As the blue light of midsummer dawn silhouettes the landscape, Tree Pipits and Willow Warblers sing melodiously from song perches atop tall conifers. Bramblings and small parties of Siskins flit overhead, filling the air with their delicate calls.

Across open ground drift the eerie calls of whimbrels and the sharp piping of a greenshank. Snipe display in flight, and ducks splash-land on open water.

As wind stirs the treetops, a lone redstart sings, its intricate trills fragile against the elements.

Monday, 25th June, 2012. 

A thunder storm was predicted, so I set up my Telinga SSM and Olympus LS-100 recorder just inside a screened door. I set the recording level low, but even so the nearest lightning strikes (about 100 feet away) completely overwhelmed the system.

The recording begins while the storm is still about ten minutes away....

There are several phases - first, there is distant thunder as the wind begins to strengthen. Then the thunder gets nearer and the rain begins. Next, the storm literally moves overhead, with several strikes within a few hundred feet of the house.

This is followed by hail, and then more wind and rain, as the storm slowly recedes to the east.

Still the first morning at the NSS workshop at the Sierras, but later and warm. Wonderful. The SoundScape is totally different than what I am used to. Telinga SSM + ls-11 at setting low and 24bit 44.1

Checking old DATtapes, I don´t hesitate to use my free space at Soundcloud for this fantastic one from 1992. Who can tell all the species  he is mimicing? 
Recorded with a Telinga PROIII and Sony TCD-D10, no filtering.
In the background, among others, is a grönsångare (Phylloscopus sibilatrix). Both these species were rather common around here, but are now gone since 15 years.

Icterine  Warbler

Dawn chorus (1) 26th of April 2020 beginning at 5.22am. I recorded the dawn chorus this morning just outside my home here, I recorded for about an hour and kept these two parts.  It was more of a test of my new recorder than a proper recording with a quiet background.  Hopefully I can get back to the woods again soon.  Sound Devices MixPre3, Rode NT1A’s.  Arklow area, Ireland.   Recording 3328.

Dawn Chorus (1) - 26 April 20 - 5.22am

On the first sample a duetting pair of Red-throated Divers  at their breeding pond. On the second sample the pair chases away an intruder, which flies over  the lake, while the male is giving aggressive "crack" calls .
