Riverboat Records celebrates it twenty-fifth year in 2014. Since its founding in 1989, the independent label has supported creative new music from far-flung corners of the globe.
This limited edition compendium offers a taste of the excellently eclectic Riverboat sounds from across the years.

Music From The Source includes music from thirty-three bands spanning across two bumper discs. Spotlighted artists include Greek folk duo Kristi Stassinopoulou & Stathis Kalyviotis who kick off proceedings with a track from their album Greekadelia which reached number one in the World Music Charts Europe. Monoswezi’s haunting minimalist sound fuses the music of Mozambique, Norway, Sweden and Zimbabwe together in seamless interplay. Indian slide-guitar maestro Debashish Bhattacharya expands his otherworldly sound Beyond The Ragasphere on virtuosic yet quirky track ‘Indospaniola’. Jaipur Kawa Brass Band’s bombastic party music presents an infectious exploration of Indian military music spun together with refigured Bollywood classics.  Lesotho-based ‘junk funk’ renegades Sotho Sounds craft their own instruments as heard on ‘Ba Ea Bojoa (Part 1)’.

Lala Njava’s offering is a Malagasy marvel featuring her silvery wandering voice, lush rolling guitars and rippling percussion. Nigerien nomad bluesmen Etran Finatawa contribute their Wodaabe-Tuareg musical melt. Shiyani Ngcobo acoustic guitar picking illuminates his mastery of the wonderful Zulu maskanda dance style. Boris Kovač & La Campanella’s melody ‘Pearl’ aches with their distinctly Balkan nuance. Klezmer troubadours She’Koyokh spoon out their re-imagined Eastern European folk on ‘Esmera Min’. 

Kardemimmit’s song ‘Ahven (Perch)’ is played by the fresh folksy kantele quartet from Finland. Cuban son band Sierra Maestra deliver their personal account of the nation’s infamous enveloping dance style. Koo Nimo’s lilting palm-wine music flies the flag for Ghana and village ensemble Wayo summon the ancient polyrhythms of Africa’s newest nation, South Sudan. Yunnanese ‘Mountain Men’ Shanren close the set with ‘Drinking Song’ from their new album, which has the UK media hailing them as ‘Chinese folk-rockers to watch’ (The Guardian).

7-Istanbul Basilic cistern

La clarinette Turque comporte des clefs de quarts de tons qui permettent d'ouvrir
certaines portes mystérieuses de l'Orient. C'est ainsi qu'une nuit j' ai pu ouvrir tranquillement
celle du réservoir d'eau de la Sultanahmet Basilic Cistern à Istanbul. J'y entrais subrepticement et pensais
être bien tranquille pour faire des prises de son en douce dans ce lieu mythique et profiter de la
réverbération naturelle, mais en fait il y avait déjà pas mal de monde dans la place :
Des couples de touristes amoureux qui s'étaient laissés enfermer par pur romantisme,
un vieil électricien qui voulait leur faire des feux d'artifice en jetant des câbles
de 380 volts dans l'eau, ce qui avait pour effet d'illuminer et de faire jaillir les poissons rouges du réservoir à
chaque coup. Pas mal, vraiment très poétique, très original comme attraction, les carpes psychédéliques !
Et aussi un grand joueur de Oud, un percussionniste Turc avec un tricorne,
un pianiste qui joue avec deux doigts, un sampleur de guembri, un barman, des danseuses unijambistes,
et plein d'autres gens qui arrivaient de partout, surgissant de derrière les piliers, certains avec des têtes de
méduses renversées.
On a passé une excellente soirée. Vraiment très chouette. Je n'ai pas pu enregistrer, comme je voulais.
Bon. ça n'est pas grave. Mais aujourd'hui je me demande encore si je ne me suis pas trompé avec la porte
de la discothèque « The Basilic » juste à côté ?
...A vérifier tout ça...J'y retourne.

With his natural curiosity, the musical art of Franck Dadure is an agora of different
influences. Between electro-acoustic and wacky free jazz, tinged with drum and
bass, orient-dub and spoken words, the composer sketches a surrealistic voyage,
with the help of Fabien Duscombs (drums), Daniel Zimmermann (trombone), Black
Sifichi (voice), Smadj (oud) and Dj Click (theremin and remixing).

Cultivant la curiosité, Franck Dadure a fait de son art musical une agora d'influences. Entre électroacoustique et free jazz déjanté, teinté de drum and bass, d'orient-dub et de spoken words, le compositeur a réussi à esquisser un voyage surréaliste, aidé dans cette entreprise par Fabien Duscombs (dums), Daniel Zimmermann (trombonne), Black Sifichi (voice), Smadj (oud), et Dj Click (theremine & platines).

David Lynch & Lykke Li - I'm Waiting Here

In addition to being a clarinetist and producer I’m also a PhD researcher studying how SoundCloud shapes the ways electronic musicians learn how to produce. Using a range of methods, my work investigates the social and musical practices of musicians online and offline to understand the connections between social media and how electronic producers, and in particular beat makers, learn how to express themselves musically as both individuals and as part of a wide scene.
