"Even without the possibility of getting physically together, they couldn't stop No Way Back. No Way Back is a state of mind, a yearly ritual that takes us back to the source, and the DJs reconvene with that source and allow it to take different shapes in their hands, from their minds to yours. To perform without the crowd, how is that possible? To perform without the ritual space created by the art and intentions of Amber and crew, how is that possible? To have the music connect without Jim Gibbons massive sounds system holding you steady, enveloping you, being expertly dialed in with each new tune, how is that possible? Well, this year's impromptu NWB stream proved that the impossible is possible, that this type of connection can happen virtually if care is taken at every step, like mastering the audio and processing the visuals into a psychedelic space that can free the mind. 

This set was a sort of rebirth for me, after great personal tragedy and losing so much, while I did draw inspiration from the history of NWB, I did not feel limited by it. This set is more about where I want to see things go, my hopes for the future. It was also huge for me as it was my first time performing at No Way Back on CDJs, without Ableton, and this was both incredibly liberating and helped me hone my vision."

Our baby Speed Queen of the south, Idalia(@eye_dalia) gave us a mixtape! Her energy can light up any corner of the dance floor, where we found her dancing her ass off, seemingly at EVERY good dance floor in New Orleans or anywhere.  We love her unbridled passion for fast dance music and we were delighted to see her easy transition from one side of the DJ booth to the other here in New Orleans. 

In her words,
"I got into dance music at a very young age because it was a way for me to create my own identity in an immigrant household. it was something different, it was a way for me to escape the pressures of being a picture perfect 1st generation born. That’s not the life I wanted. I remember being 9 or 10 and listening to Binary Finary’s 1998 on my Walkman and just zoning out feeling at ease, and just imagining myself at a club or something. Dance music with its culture & political roots has empowered me as a POC womxn with an alternative lifestyle and being surrounded in a community with like-minded individuals is what keeps me in dance music. being able to curate a musical experience for someone else to dance freely to, to take them on a journey or to empower them, is what keeps me grounded in dance music".

His mix for Spontaneous Affinity is an emotive listen, traversing everything from the euphoric to the pensive.

"Given that we’re entering month 9 of the Covid19 pandemic in the US, I wanted to snapshot how it feels for me to be playing/experiencing music at this moment. The goal here was to make a deliberately eclectic mix representative of my moods lately: hopeful, unsettled, wistful, a bit dark, dreaming, playful, melancholic, erratic, with some fleeting moments of tenderness and euphoria.

I went through several folders of stuff I’ve been itching to play, including some recent acquisitions, and landed on the Glacci, the Barker, and the Dadub/Retina.it tracks as the primary ones that would guidepost the flow of the mix. I knew I wanted to have the Barker track near the end, because it's got this sweetness yet it's still kind of thoughtful and longing–a nice, complex mood to leave a listener with during a lockdown.

From there I started seeding a playlist and loosely sorting by 'energy' to connect the feel of the three tracks in a form that I hope is interesting for y'all. I recorded the mix live into Logic via a Xone:96 using 3 XDJ-1000Mk2's and an Eventide H9 (this time just for a little reverb)."
