Our client Ryan was in my creative sharing group and the topic was the cycle of relapse in addiction. Ryan is a talented freestyle rapper and I asked him to do a rap about relapsing after being clean. He laid this down in one take. (Rory)

This is another result of a creative expression group assignment. Gregory wrote this lyric partially and the entire group agreed he should write a song with it. He collaborated with his peers Josue and Nate, this is the very first time Nate has played drums on any recording. We did this project over 4 days when we had time. June 10-13, 2022. I think they all did great considering how little time was spent actually tracking the music.

How lyrics are interpreted by the individual is one of the amazing things about how music has the ability to touch anyone in many different ways. This song for me was very cathartic during my stay at Serenity Lodge and expresses, to me, the fear a mother has while her son burns his life away, to where he may die before her, stuck in the throes of addiction. Also strong for me is the call to stand up, to do it now, before it’s too late and, the lasting pain of putting off that call or visit to a loved one only to find out that they passed the night they were reaching out to you and needed that call.

Graham, Tex and Matt: thank you for everything you guys did. Words can’t describe how much it meant to me being able to explore creativity with you. I was hesitant to get vulnerable and share it with people; when I did, you all made it fun and free of judgement. This song is a metaphor of my relationship to substances. Being in and out of recovery my entire life, I likened it to me being “the man on the moon.” My life waxed and waned for better and for worse and I was responsible for pulling the tides onto the beach that destroyed every sandcastle I built with my wife, family and friends; over and over and over again. But come hell or high water, I’ll keep swimming for the coast - never give up and hold onto hope that we do recover. I wrote it in the midst of my addiction but singing it sober with men on the same path as I was indescribable. Again, thank you for everything. Love.
