The brainchild and mastermind behind Hidden Recordings; first began the label as a means to take the duo’s music to the public.  Seven years later, through a steady stream of consistent releases, Hidden continues its ascent into one of techno’s most respected and forward thinking labels.
As a producer, Deepak's wide range with Dieter is on display, exemplified by their remix of A. Trebor’s "Quemadura del Sol" played by Adam Beyer at Berghain and featured on Drumcode Radio.  Conversely, the DJ Qu remix of their well-known and beloved release, “Wolkenreise” was licensed by RA’s #1 2012 DJ, Seth Troxler for his NRK Lab03 mix compilation.
As a DJ, he’s left many with ear-to-ear smiles, sweaty bodies, and sore feet through his unrelenting deeper techno style topped by a touch of soul to bring unique warmth to a heavy big room sound.  He’s travelled all over the world and North America for shows, always leaving fans asking for more.  If you want to get the essence of what he’s all about as a DJ, pay a visit to the label's notorious night, appropriately named Rough and Tumble where you hear him play longer sets well into in the early hours.  On a larger scale, a few highlights include being invited to play Electric Zoo 2011, BPM Festival 2011, Official Movement After-parties and a memorable closing set at the Great American Techno Festival 2012.

5 Questions with Deepak Sharma:

1.  How did you first get into Electronic music and then move to DJ-ing and production ? 

Like most of us, we all had our 'moment' when we went from fan to wanting to get into the business.  I was lucky to grow up in the Twilo generation in NYC, so I had many inspiring nights where I went home and dreamed what it was like to DJ a party like the one I was just at.  I wanted to be a part of it in anyway, so I started out as a promoter and it grew from there to releasing a CD for a lounge in Brooklyn, meeting Dieter Krause in the process, and then starting Hidden Recordings.

2.  Tell us about the "Rough and Tumble" events.  

The night is very symbolic of Hidden Recordings overall - from our catalog to the vibe we try to push through high octane DJ sets well into the night.  We are fucking relentless on these nights.  We play for our hardcore fans and ourselves.  Everyone has a singular focus, from the DJs to the fans - how can we collectively take the party to the next level?  Give a listen to any of our releases, or podcasts, and you'll get that down and dirty, raw, sweaty feel of Rough and Tumble.  It's hours and hours of rolling techno thunder....Take a deep breath, and dive in for the next 6-7 hours of pure mayhem.   

3.  Hidden Recordings, your label, has quite a discography of with some of most prominent producers and remixers in modern techno.  What was your driving force to start a label?  

Initially, it was a platform for Dieter Krause and I to release our own music and over time, we decided to invite like-minded artists of those we enjoyed.  It's grown into this family with artists all over the globe.  But all with a singular focus of releasing underground techno with some house mixed in just to keep our fans on their toes.  I'm a lucky guy to see this all take shape, and to feel the enthusiasm grow with each release.  We are blessed to have so many prolific artists respect us enough to provide fantastic remixes to up-and-coming artists.  It's a killer combination!

4.  Hidden releases both digital as well as vinyl on the regular.  Why do you feel its important to continue pressing records?  

I still play vinyl, as recently as in June for 4 hours with Savas Pascalidis who is exclusively vinyl only.  So many prolific DJs still play vinyl, so it's important to keep vinyl alive for them, and me!

Also, ask any producer if they would prefer to release on vinyl or digital.  Bet you 100% would prefer vinyl and consider it much bigger accomplishment.  Pressing vinyl isn't easy.  You have to deal with the cost, distribution, pressing on time etc.  You have to want to do it.  But when I hear somebody in Japan or Berlin just picked up our latest record, it means the world to us, especially the artist.  I rather be on release 30 than release 75 of digital only.  Anybody can release digital, that's not really breathing life into the underground.  Simply put, vinyl separates the men from the boys and you legitimately call yourself a record label.  We take a lot of pride in that.  

5.  Any closing thoughts; what does the future hold for you and Hidden?  

I feel like we're really in a great groove right now and it's just the beginning.  So much more to do - on the release front and out there DJing sharing our vision.  We want to make sure all the pockets of techno in North America are satisfied with HR and move out towards Europe and South America and Asia from there.  A lot of great response with possible gigs to take our vibe all over and hopefully Europe in the Fall.  Watch out for our next few releases as well.  A Hidden tradition with up and comers with great remixers such as Jonas Kopp, Truncate and Hans Bouffmyhre!!  Stay close... 

Deepak Sharma -  From 0-1 Studio Session Vol 060

Josef Gaard is a relative newcomer to the techno scene, releasing his first EP on the Berlin-based label This Ain't Music in December of 2012. Since then he has worked with multiple labels, releasing both a remix and another EP on Stephan Panev's new Komponenti label. His music has been charted by the likes of Cio D'or and his track "Chariot" was named one of the best dub techno tracks of 2012 by dubtechnoblog.com. His compositions range from ambient techno to noise and industrial, but always maintain the same attention to detail and meticulous sound design.

5 Questions with Josef Gaard:

1. Tell us, who is Josef Gaard; what were your early influences, and how did it all begin? 

I've been making music nearly my entire life - I started on piano when I was very young and then moved on to study various styles of percussion up through college. My parents are both classical musicians so I grew up listening to a lot of orchestral music. I had a pretty heavy metal/industrial phase for a while and then eventually become more interested in electronic music. However some of my biggest influences are drone artists - Celer and Stars of the Lid being two huge ones. The kind of immersion drone music lends itself to has always really interested and influenced me. 

2. Outside of the music itself, what do you feel drives your production and dj-ing stylistically? 

I've always felt that music is a reflection of consciousness and this concept certainly drives me stylistically in many ways. When I mix two records together I don't view it as simply blending two pieces of audio, but rather as combining the blood, sweat, and tears of two different producers in a way that creates new musical pathways and thereby bridges a gap between their consciousness. It may sound like a bunch of hippie nonsense, but the inherent ability that techno has to connect and transcend these gaps is a huge part of why I love it and choose it as my medium. 

3. What does the future currently hold for your productions? 

I am currently putting the finishing touches on a new release I have been working on for quite some time. If everything goes as planned it should be out on vinyl sometime either this year or early next year. I am very excited to share it as well as begin to work on a live set. 

4. You, somewhat, recently reloaded to Washington. What was the reasoning behind it and how are you liking it here? 

I moved up here to pursue studies in sustainable agriculture which has been going really well. The pacific northwest offers a lot in terms of natural beauty so the process of moving up here and being surrounded by the unique landscape has certainly had a huge affect on my music. Also the music scene in Seattle, while relatively small, is quite excellent and has provided plenty of inspiration. 

5. Outside of music, what other things do you spend your time on? 

I am currently working on two farms as well as managing my own plot of land so that has been taking up a lot of my time. I spend pretty much all of my free time making music or DJing, but I do try to read and exercise as much as possible. The combination of farm work and DJing has been an interesting one considering they are two completely different lifestyles, but I have come to really enjoy the juxtaposition.

Sci Fi Sol (Christina Broussard) got her start as an EDM artist over a decade ago in the New Orleans area as a drum and bass producer and vocalist and has since expanded her sound to encompass multiple genres, including IDM, ambient, and techno, with a dark industrial edge. After moving to Portland by way of New York City, she further developed her live performance and production skills, showcasing them with releases on several record labels including a debut full length on Pleasure Boat Records (Seattle), which has been described by Dave Segal of The Stranger as a “distinctively enchanted sound [that] explores deeply eerie, psychedelic realms.” Truly a chameleon of electronica, her remix work has also expressed a broad range of styles including dub, drum and bass, leftfield IDM, and techno. Her DJ sets are known for being driving and eclectic– exploring the outer reaches of techno while still being tailored for the dancefloor.

Interview:

How were you introduced to electronic music?

I’ve always been a singer ever since I was a small child. Through that, as a teenager, I met like minded individuals and we formed a sort of electronic band called The Crackracers. I played the Memory Moog and sang/ screamed thru tons of effects and the fun I had there really got the ball rolling. It inspired me to move forward learning how to use drum machines and eventually the music software that would allow me to begin producing tracks all on my own.

What does your studio setup consist of?

My studio setup consists of, in terms of hardware, a Nord G2 digital modular synth, Native Instruments Maschine, Elektron Octatrack and Roland JX-8P. I use Ableton Live and Logic Pro as my DAWs, and of course a ton of audio units.

Besides Djing and producing electronic music, you are well versed in the visual arts including video and design. How do you feel the two modalities feed each other? Or are they remain separate entities in your creative process?

They definitely feed each other in my world. Music is a translation of feelings, words and images into sound the same way that the moving image is a language that does not necessarily rely on words to communicate a visual idea. They are both universal languages that can make a deep impact on the subconscious. I think this is one of the main reasons why working in these mediums has fascinated me. I have produced a few music videos and plan to explore more ideas there in the future. Although at this point in my career I really have most of my spare time focused on producing music.

Your bio says you have a 'love of the obscure', can you expand on that?

I love the experimental, the unknown, the underground and less accessible. Things that make me see or understand the world from a new perspective are what I am drawn to. I find that many times the best things are hidden and require you to dig deep and go searching for them before they reveal themselves.

 
If you could collaborate with any other artist who would it be and why?

Hmmm, that’s a tough one. There are so many artists that I admire. Gudrun Gut, Kim Gordon, and Dasha Rush, David Lynch, and Fellini are at the top of my list, but someone closer to home would be my super talented partner Carlo / Senor Frio. We collaborate on electronic music and are working on an EP that will be ready sometime next year.

Tell us about your forthcoming EP, Solar Eyes.

It has a theme of timelessness to it, exploring notions of the eyes of the universe that are always on us, watching us to see what we will do next and how our world will evolve, hoping that we move toward a more progressive and equal society. I would call it electronica with heavy breaks, dnb, techno and dub influences, but dark, atmospheric and brooding as seems to be the usual with my work. There is one techno banger on the release that I’m pretty stoked about.

Sci Fi Sol - From 0-1 Studio Session Vol 062

Monya is originally from Poland and has been signed to respected techno labels with her production. She has seen a quick rise through the techno scene in such a short time and this has seen her play beside many respected techno artists. Through hard work and determination this has earned her bookings at the Internationally renowned Tresor and many other clubs. She just released her first album for BCR and is busy doing remixes and EPs for other labels like, Illegal Alien Records, IF?, Proper New York, and work with many well known artists like Steve Stoll, Bas Mooy, Iformat, Mike Parker, Pfirter, Joseph Mcgeechan. Monya's sound is industrial, bass-heavy, hypnotic techno. She was also in charge of the label nights for BCR and was an important part of the label. Recently, Monya has also began a new project with Joseph McGeechan working on collaborations together. She is managed in North America, Canada by Re-Konstrukt artist management which is one of the leading techno booking agencies.

5 Questions with Monya:

You released your debut album, "Somatics -The Book", on BCR in March 2013, including a vinyl release with remixers Steve Stoll, Bas Mooy and Joseph McGeechan. What was the inspiration for these tracks?

As trivial as it might sounds, life. Thru the past couple of years I’ve experienced the ‘unexpected’... do not want to bore you with all the details but I’ve made a lot of changes in the way I percept not only myself but the world surrounding. Finally I came to the point where all my emotions had to be unleashed. Day by day, tone to tone and ‘Somatics’ was born.

What was your role in BCR, [Berlin Consumer Records], and how did you become involved with the label?

My affair with the label began in 2011, shortly after ‘Bunkerstrasse’ EP has been released. Soon after I became close with the label owner. Honestly not even sure when exactly I became assistant and booking manager.

You play Tresor fairly regularly, what is it that makes the club special for your style of techno?

Tresor is a legend in itself, therefore I find this question a bit odd. ..I guess it is special for any type of techno... it rather makes the industrial style I play sound magical!

What types of music do you follow besides techno?

Where to start the question is! I am very open minded, I guess it all depends on a day and mood I’m currently in... it can be as well rock, Balkan or classic music.

What is coming up next for Monya?

Only good things I hope! I’m now focused on kicking off with my own label Corresponding Positions . All I can say at the moment is that you can expect the first vinyl release very soon, including remixes from well known and respected producers in the industry. I also look forward to my upcoming release with my friend ad.lib including Mike Parker and Bas Mooy remixes.

Bio:
Forming a sound both familiar and foreign, existing in the hours of the day where you allow your head to open, relax, and reinvent, Cyanwave creates post warehouse rhythms layered with captured audio and dub soundscapes. Imbuing the spirit that created the Northwest, home of refugees and adventurers, Cyanwave’s hypnotic journey takes the listener from the dance floor to the headphones and back around. With no final destination, the aim is exploration itself.
The hybrid sound of Cyanwave is the result of reaction and reinterpretation of the duo’s contrasting backgrounds; Justin Byrnes from a history as lead guitarist in rock bands in the ‘90s and Keith Kelley’s experience attending raves and DJ-ing in the infamous Midwest of the US. Using a combination of analog and digital synthesizers, expansive software and processing, Cyanwave values sound aesthetic over genre loyalty. Experimentation is not limited to just production; exploration continues during each performance as Cyanwave continually reconfigures what it means to perform live.

Interview:
1.  For those who may not know, who is Cyanwave and how did it all begin?

Cyanwave is a collaboration between Justin Byrnes and Keith Kelley.  We have been friends for a while but didn't start working on music together until early 2009.  At the time we were each working on separate remixes for From 0-1.  We thought we'd give working on a project together a try and it seemed to click right away.   

2.  2013 appeared to be a bit quiet in the Cyanwave camp.  What have you guys all been working on this year?

We took the second part of this year off of playing our live set and have been kinda tucked away in the studio quite a bit.  We've each had the pleasure of picking up some new synthesizers and have been spending quite a bit of time with those.  Also, we have started to work on the early parts of a possible Cyanwave A/V set.  It is something we have always been interested in and have experimented with a couple times before. 

3.  Cyanwave has quite an impressive Live setup.  What gear do you all incorporate and why do you feel its necessary?

 haha, we ask every time we are packing for a show "is all this gear really necessary?" but the answer is invariably yes.  We decided that when we play together that we want it to be much more than we were able to do individually.  Also we both feel very strongly against the growing acceptance that there has to be a laptop screen between the performer and the audience.  With using a combination of NI Maschine on one computer and Ableton with an APC-40 and Ipad running Liine Griid we're able to keep our laptops tucked out of the way and focus on playing and improvising on our parts.  We also rely heavily on the Access Virus TI for live synthesis and the Eventide Space as our distinctive reverb.  Outside of that we each have a sound card multi tracked into an Allen and Heath mixer.  There are some other small bits in there but those are the main players that make up our setup on a regular basis. 

4.  Outside of the studio, what else fuels your creativity?

We've both taken lots of influence from various travels and generally being inquisitive people. I think we'd both go crazy if we didn't have some kinda outlet for creativity and experimentation.  

5.  What does 2014 (and beyond) have in store for Cyanwave; gigs, releases, etc.. ?

We were happy to branch out this year with a track appearing on a great compilation by Dock Schallplatten and we have a 3-track EP coming up soon next year on Undulate Recordings, as well as some more material with Innerflight.  We will continue to send out our material to new labels and work with our friends here in town.  Also we plan on continuing to work on the A/V set and spending the winter in the studio.  Cheers!

Bio:
Brooklyn native John Massey has been attempting to damage eardrums for almost 14 years. A child of the 80s, John transplanted to Los Angeles as a teen. There he discovered an emerging underground dance scene and was infected with an interest in electronic music. John soon founded Sound Rehab Productions, connected with influential local promoters and artists such as Omar Ojeda (Darius Aleksander), Robin Porter, Drumcell, Ron-D-Core, Raiz (Acid Circus) and began coordinating techno events and working the dj circuit throughout the southern California area. Today John resides in Seattle.
In the years since John has stayed close to the underground, while making appearances at events such as Seattle’s Decibel Festival, SubSensory’s monthly STATIC in Portland, and frequent club and afterhour gigs around the Pacific Northwest. John is the kind of unassuming artists that earns respect rather than demands it; keeping his head down and focusing on his craft, trusting his instincts to keep the dancefloor moving. His current set consists of a live/dj hybrid that enables John to creatively blend a wide variety of techno, minimal and experimental sounds.
As a producer John tackles a variety of sounds ranging from his previous hip hop efforts under Dysposable Heroes, to his techno projects under his own name and previously as Indispenable Villains. He’s affiliated with Seattle’s From 0-1, a conceptual label which he represents in his various endeavors. He’s released on various labels such as HardSignal, Bleepsequence, From 0-1, Subsensory, Droid and his own Sound Rehab Recordings.  No matter the genre he has always enjoyed working with various artists giving him the opportunity to make new friends and take in new influences.:


John Massey From 0-1 Studio Sessiosn Vol 066

Techno craftsman Andrei Morant holds a focus as sharp and abductive as his sound.  A paramount figure in the Houston underground since the early 90s, the North American artist also known as Jack Mackrel quickly established himself as a professional.  Morant started DJing in 1986, and only three years after his first gig in 1990, embarked on his production career.  Over 50 releases later, he is now recognized world round for his catalog of insurgent beats, and is featured on respected labels such as Planet Rhythm Records , Starkstrom Schallplatten, and Gynoid Audio.  Never faltering in his commitment to innovative techno, Morant unleashed a creature of his own machination – Scope Recordings.   His new label and recent production endeavors reflect his weighty history, as well as his knowledge of avant media and style, resulting in a finely tailored, powerful impression.

5 Questions Interview:

1.  You've been around as a DJ for a long time, starting in 1986.  What was the impetus for starting back then and what kind of music were you playing?       

I started playing the drums at a very early age, 3 or 4 years old i think, by the time I was 15 I had really gotten into dance music, being introduced to it by my older brother and his friends, they where avid clubbers and collectors of records. I basically became the resident d.j. at all of their house parties, which where about twice a week.  I was playing all the typical 80's dance tracks from the time.

2.  Fast forward 28 years and here you are, still at it.  In fact, this Studio Session you just played at a certain well known club in Berlin is clear evidence.  How was that show, and in all your time as a DJ, how does it rank?       

It was great, staff is extremely professional and accommodating. The crowd is intense and very responsive, everyone there dances their ass off!!  I will say that playing from 9 am till noon on a Sunday afternoon is a different experience all together.  As far as how I would rank it, man I really have no idea.  I've had so many great gigs over the years, it's really hard to make a list.  But it'd definitely be way up there.

3)  Being involved in DJing and producing Techno for as long as you have, are there times where you've ever wanted to walk away from it?       

Yeah, actually I have walked away twice.  The first time was in about 1993 I quit for about three years, I still dabbled in the studio but was not really active in the music scene. Then in 2004 I quit again, I had extremely busy years before and kind of got burnt out.  The lifestyle is a lot harder then most people imagine.  I think it's important to have a balance  between family life and your music career, and I feel now i can do it the way I want, take the gigs I want, make the music I want ,when I want to.  Music is not my career it's my hobby now and I have a lot more freedom and have a clearer head, no pressure.

 4)  What's your message to people when it comes to staying inspired and interested in all things Techno?         

For me it's just finding those tracks, you know the ones you hear and you say to your self "Well shit, back to the drawing board for me". Those are the thing that keep me inspired.  There are thousands of great techno producers out there and everyone of them is an inspiration to me.

5) Here at From 0-1 we are happy to have you on board as an artist, not only for this exclusive podcast, but also as a remixer for Milkplant's 'This is not Reality' 12" EP coming midyear.  Are there any other notable releases you have in the works you can leak to us right now?

Ha ha, you should have asked me two months ago, I had tons of releases , 'Falling Down' on my imprint Scope Recordings, and 'Density' also on Scope.  A great E.P. 'No Sterile Plans' on Take More Music, also I just had my debut release on Naked Lunch "Game Over".  A remix for DJ Shiva on Different is Different, remix for Unn on Teggno, pretty much all in the last 6 weeks. I do have about 4 E.P.'s I'm compiling for other labels right now but I can't really go into them. Oh! I'm returning to one of my my old label groups run by a very good friend of mine from the late 90's, currently working on some 133 bpm bangers that will be sure to "PUNISH" some dance floors. Very excited about that. All in all i can say that I am having a blast, and really excited about the future.

5 Questions:
According to your bio, you started off dj-ing drum and bass, what caused the switch to techno?

 You know, I don't really have a good reason other than my tastes shifted a bit more into techno and I just kind of went with it. It was the first proper electronic music I heard and I always loved it, so it was probably pretty natural to go that way. That was probably late 2000, and I haven't played d&b since, though I still enjoy it. I really favored the super-heavy, intense stuff so I probably just burned myself out on it or something. Detroit has always had a small but very talented d&b scene, for as long as I've been around to see it.

You co-own the excellent Detroit based label Dystopian Rhythm, with Garrett Dillon. What was the reason for starting it up?

We had talked about starting a label for long time, but never really had the means "back in the day". We both dropped out of it entirely from around 2001 to 2009 or so. Minimal just didn't do it for us, and it felt like a lot of our heroes were just boring us now. When we both started to get fully back into it, we were both in a considerably more secure and stable part of life, and of course the commonality of the internet made it much easier to get in touch with artists we liked and organize everything.


The label has a varied but distinct sound to it. How do you go about curating it?

We actually have pretty different tastes for the most part. Garrett's into a lot of the dark, heavy, peak-time stuff and I really prefer the deep and dubbier end of things. I think so far the label has been pretty accurate at representing a lot of our overlap in taste. We both love weird, synthy, kind-of stuff, and broken-beat. A lot of the music we've released so far either fell in our lap (like the Flex release) or were the result of us meeting someone whose music we enjoyed and getting to know them. It was pretty crazy to put out an Andrei Morant EP, I saw that guy so many times in the late 90's and early 2000's!


Being a resident, how do you feel about the current state of "techno" affairs in the surrounding Detroit area?

It's actually really strong still, with a lot of new talent and plenty of artists coming through. We're pretty spoiled with Movement, and Blank Code does a killer show every month. We've had some success with our events and crowds are getting better and better. There are also some really cool new artists doing stuff you wouldn't necessarily equate with Detroit, like the Slyfoxx and How to Kill guys. It's sometimes hard to get a good crowd for proper techno the same as it is anywhere in the US, but we really can't complain. We're glad to be a part of this current upswing.


Any future projects, shows, label news you're excited about and would like to share?

We've got some really good EPs in the works right now from Angel Costa, Andre Ramos, Dolgener and myself, and an LP from Uun who has really been getting better with every release he does. We haven't done an event in a while but we will be getting that ball rolling again very soon. Thanks for having me!

Uun is darkness on the dancefloor. Coming up in the metal scene of Kansas City, Uun, also known as Ryan Malony, played in multiple regional bands from 2000-2008 before turning his focus to techno.
Since 2007, Uun has put out mixes for Dystopian Rhythm, More or Less, Kansas City Techno, Business Class Records, Feed The Raver, Subterror Radio among others.
In his home base Uun is known for being a member of Kansas city Techno as well as his previous residencies at The Riot Room and The Foundry.
On July 17th, 2013 he released his first EP for Business Class Records. Titled "Minus" it features two originals plus remix duty from Blank Code's Joel Morgan, Naked Lunch's Stevie Wilson, & Dystopian Rhythm's Garret Dillon. He has also self released multiple tracks and two EP's.
December 9th, 2013, marks the release of his second EP, this time for the vaunted Teggno Records. Entitled "Structure", it is a 130bpm techno workout that features two original's plus remixes from techno legend Andrei Morant and NYC based Justin Schumacher.
In 2014, Uun shows no sign of slowing down with multiple new releases and remixes in the works. Be on the lookout for his brand of dubby dark techno.

5 Questions:

You really seemed to burst onto the scene recently. Where did Uun begin?

First I'd like to say thanks for having me on as a guest! I had a great time putting this mix together. The Uun moniker has been around since 2009, but I only really started focusing on techno about a year and a half ago. Before that I was making stuff more in the realm of IDM because I've always been into stuff like that, especially the early Warp Records material like Autechre. My first trip to Detroit for Movement in 2012 changed my direction completely and I haven't looked back since.

What's the scene like in Kansas City?

Kansas City has a lot going for it, its a bit of a crossroads for a lot of major cities so the styles and genres reflect that. However it can also be frustrating as its difficult to pull off a strong singular direction like throwing true techno events on a regular basis. That being said the last couple of years I have seen a bit of a shift from straight up party music to deeper forms of house and techno. We recently hosted a night with DJ Shiva which went off really well, it was one of the first times I saw a pretty large crowd going wild for real nasty techno. This Summer and beyond we are looking to throw more events of that type and I really look forward to helping the scene grow.

What is your workflow like, how do you go about creating music?

I have a pretty structured workflow now that took a LONG time to get down to where it was even remotely efficient and expressive. I used to sit down and kind of be lost as to what to start with or what direction to go in. Now when I sit down to write music I always have an initial idea I'm going off of. Sometimes its a specific sound, sometimes its just a specific clap pattern, but I always try to have a seed of creativity at the center. I often ask myself, "What is the point of this track? What makes it unique?" If I can't come up with an answer immediately I know I need to reevaluate. With how much music there is out there available you really have to have SOMETHING that makes your tunes stand out from the rest. I'm not saying that I really have that yet, but its something I am always working towards and something that I am always very critical of my own work over.

How do you spend your time outside of the studio?

Outside of techno I enjoy PC gaming quite a bit. Right now I'm way into the Diablo III xpac and Dota 2. I'm actually travelling to Seattle this year to watch the Dota 2 grand-finals which I'm really excited about. Other than that I enjoy spending time in the gym. It is often the only time I have time to think and I often come up with ideas while working out. Sound body sound mind!

Any upcoming gigs, releases, or general Uun info you would like to share?

This Summer is going to be really busy which is awesome! Looking forward to spending my third year in a row in Detroit for Movement, its awesome to be around so many like minds and meet so many cool people that love techno as much as I do. I also have a few gigs in St. Louis including one playing with Rrose who is a huge inspiration for me so I'm excited for that opportunity. This winter was particularly brutal weather wise so I spent most of it working on music. June 11th sees the release of my debut album which I couldn't be more excited about. Its coming out on Dystopian Rhythm which is a label I have followed and enjoyed since its launch, so its a great honor to be on there alongside some other awesome talent. Other than that I have a collaberation with Atie Horvat coming out June 15 on Rheostatus, and an EP on Morgan Tomas' label Reloading sometime later in the Summer, as well as a handful of remixes I have done.

Uun - From 0-1 Studio Sessions Vol 069

Joachim Spieth is a long time DJ, producer and label boss of Affin. Whether through the music he produces himself, or the productions he releases on his own imprint, the sounds always operate in their own little pockets away from the norm. It all started with ‘Abi 99’ – one of the earliest 12”s Cologne stable Kompakt ever released. At the time it was supported by legendary UK radio DJ John Peel and, in turn, was followed up with more huge early success in the form of ‘Under Pressure’, a split single EP on Speicher with Michael Mayer. In the years since, there have been tracks licensed to The Orb’s Back to Mine compilation, appearances on labels like Paso, Traum Schallplatten and Tongut and a steady stream of remixes for the likes of Michael Mayer, Einmusik and Guy J, all of which have blurred the lines between techno, minimal and house music in the producers own unique way. Chief amongst Spieth’s achievements are those of his wide-ranging label, Affin. As well as hosting a regular radio show of the same name on Proton and label nights at clubs across Europe, the imprint has clocked up 150 releases, spawned various Selected compilations (including one recently to celebrate its centenary release) and has championed music from artists like Arnaud Le Texier, Samuel L Session, Gez Varley, Truncate, Reggy van Oers and so many more.
 Most recently, the six-year-old outlet has started Affin LTD, a sub-label putting music out on vinyl, with great looking and sounding results. It’s no wonder, then, that revered contemporary DJs like Derrick May, Ben Sims and Laurent Garnier regularly include Affin records in their sets around the world. 
Spieth himself plays a range of top European clubs on a regular basis, impressing crowds at respected venues like Culture Box, Denmark, Tresor, Berlin, Hive Zurich in Switzerland, Kater Holzig in Berlin, and many other European hotspots with his deft blend of groove, melody and atmosphere. His latest vinyl EP release ‘Sensual’ might just be his greatest to date, with the likes of Scuba playing it in his Essential Mix, Depeche Mode’s Martin L Gore (a pop hero for Spieth) charting it on Beatport, Juan Atkins dropping it during his live Beatport stream and many other accolades across the board.

1. How did you find your way into electronic music?

I was touched by music since i was a child. Got a lot of influences while listening music on the radio. As a teenager is was addicted to instrumental Hip Hop, the bridge finally was built by the HEADZ compilation on UK­based Mo Wax label. After i got into Warp Records etc...

2. Now that you have been actively releasing records for 15 years, how do you feel your process has changed?

I like to experiment with sounds. I mainly work with samples since i started to build up my own tunes. Back in the days it was more expensive to get a proper setup, nowadays you can find a lot of awesome software plug­ins doing a great job. Actually i like to mix hardware / software.

3. Your label, Affin, has been steadily releasing quality techno and house for about 7 years. What was your decision to start the label and how do you curate it?

I got some good demo stuff from unknow ppl around. Moreover, i wanted to build something to feel home. Working with labels sometimes isn’t easy if they decide to change their style... So you’re always relying on decisions from others. As i worked with Kompakt, Paso Music and some other labels for years i thought it was just on time to decide on my own what should be released. In the begin i wanted to release “all” music i like but this changed in the last 1 ­ 2 years. Now we’re focussed on techno.

4. What are some of your favorite tracks at the moment?

Never easy to name just a few as i always like so many tunes :­) Dustin Zahn’s “Against The Grain” on his new Drumcode Album is ace. “Hypnopaedia” from Ness on Planet Rhythm is awesome! Not to forget Keith Carnal’s “Prospect” on my own label Affin, ha ha.

5. Any closing thoughts on upcoming releases, label work, etc ?

Ah yes, for sure. I’m very excited about my upcoming 12” Aidan (with rmxs from Samuel L Session & Arnaud Le Texier). Proper techno package... Arnaud also will deliver his 2nd 12” before summer ( with amazing Unam Zetineb rmx) and some more projects are already set up. I’m really happy to see how things developing in the last time regarding Affin.

5 Questions Interview:

1) You're in Pittsburgh these days. Formerly, you were in Portland, Oregon; What was the impetus to relocate to the Steel City?

My wife and I actually didn't have jobs or know anybody in town before moving to Pittsburgh. We were living in Tokyo for a little while after getting married, and decided to make a return to the States somewhere where there were decent job prospects and an affordable cost of living. I wasn't sure what to expect but it's become a really comfortable spot for us. I do miss the funky weirdness of Portland along with many of my great friends there, but I can't say I miss struggling to pay rent.

2) Pittsburgh isn't necessarily on the international radar when it comes to Techno but from our perspective there seems to be a good bit of activity there music-wise. Care to shed some light on the subject for us?

I've been here a little over 4 years now, and it seems to be developing pretty well lately. There are some passionate people here working very hard at putting out some great records and throwing events, not to mention some open minded and responsive crowds ready to get down in whatever dive bar or bath house is hosting some proper techno. It's taken a while to build up to this point but there is worthwhile stuff going on every weekend now, and the local event crews are all working in tandem to make things go off.

3) You run Bleepsequence, a netlabel. You've been at that for awhile now, for how long, and what made you interested in going for the Creative Commons approach?

We've been at it since the start of 2010, it's gone by so fast. I had been collecting so much netlabel music for years up to that point and had connected with a lot of great artists. It just felt like it was the right time to form a collective and start giving back. It's liberating to not have to worry about the financial aspects of running a traditional label, besides the fact that I don't want to have the need to sell units be an indirect influence on the sound. We are all about pure expression, risky experimentalism, and concept exploration.

4) For people who aren't familiar with your sound- how would you describe it, and what outlets can we find your original productions?

I have a wide range of influences and prefer to use unconventional sound palettes and design methods. I always have a hard time nailing down a genre for my music because there's always little pieces of stuff floating around in my pool of sound, deep spacey bleeps, glitchy clicks, pulsing bass, rhythmic drones, or weird dubbed out field recordings. My recording process is often driven by impulsive instinct and spontaneity, as I find that the unexpected things that happen in the studio are usually the most interesting.

I have releases available all over the place. You can find some of it on beatport and bandcamp, or I've also contributed a lot of work to netlabels that you can download for free. And of course, I often release and remix on Bleepsequence. For the most recent EPs, check labels like Make Mistakes, Kalimari Musique, and Abstrakt Records. And let's not forget an appearance on a compilation by From 0-1 back in the day!

5) Any interesting bits on the horizon we should be on the lookout for?

I have an EP of some eclectic stuff coming soon on the netlabel Wondermachine Musique, and another weird techno EP for Make Mistakes. I'm also very excited to be working on some music and sound design for a beautiful and intense arcade shooter called ZeroDay, an independent project that has been in the works for years. It's coming together really well and I can't wait to see what develops with that. I'm also preparing to launch a new channel on youtube that will host a variety of music and technology videos, including stuff like iPad app reviews, hardware demos, random live jams, and whatever else pops into my head. Mike Gervais hails from the old guard of Minneapolis. With an ear for technical proficiency and a musical rhythm that spans wide and deep, Gervais has been pushing his sound through production, performance, and promoting for the past 15+ years. 

In the 90’s Gervais started like most of his generation stumbling onto a small underground techno scene. Fast forward through the years and Gervais went on to organize many events around MInneapolis and the midwest, perform across North America, start the record label Timefog, and begin his own endless journey into music production. In 2012 Gervais launched his latest project SYSTEM and quickly established the event series as a top tier US techno circuit stop. Gervais is now developing the launch of SYSTEM records, slated to begin releasing limited vinyl early 2014.

With dedication and experience, Gervais has earned his reputation as a hardworking Midwest artist committed to delivering his sounds and ideas to audiences everywhere.

INTERVIEW:

1.  You are originally from Virginia where you came up in the punk/hardcore scene. From there, what drew you into electronic music?

Funny you should bring that up! The tail-end of the podcast sort of goes back in time and explains that in reverse. If the listener sticks around for the last ten minutes or so you’ll see what I mean: Housey Industrial to Industrialy Hardcore to one of my early high-school Punk anthems. 
	Even before I got into Punk I was interested in Kraftwerk, Human League, Missing Persons and lots of that early 80’s synth music which actually led me to Punk/Hardcore. Around that same time I started listening to early Hip Hop as well. The radio stations in Virginia that played Hip Hop also played club music late at night, so I was hearing Chicago House, Hip House, Acid and stuff like that. A friend turned me on to Skinny Puppy which seemed to be a combination of all these things I liked—and I sought out more music in that vein. Certain groups like On-U Sound System bridged the gap between Industrial music and House—so really all of these genres are in some way connected for me. I saw a lot of similarities in the Techno/Electronic music scene to the Punk/HC scene in that they were both very Do-It-Yourself and done on their own terms at the time (xerox zines / vinyl / independent distribution / etc). 


2.  You've maintained a pretty prolific output for the last, nearly, 2 decades.  What is some of the art, music, etc. that keeps you motivated today?

Well, my output has definitely slowed down over the years but I am constantly finding inspiration in things new and old. 
	Art-wise I am big fan of the Dada movement. It’s really had such an impact on graphic design, activism, and even the art of sampling and sound collage. Hannah Hoch, Kurt Schwitters, and John Heartfield are all favorites who motivate my art as well as music. 
	Music wise I find motivation in lots of different genres: Dub, Industrial, House, Doom, Funk, Techno, Black Metal, Hardcore, Experimental, Hip Hop, Blues... Whatever.
Robert Hood, Wolves In The Throne Room, Burial Hex, Soft Metals, King Tubby, Jimi Hendrix, Deepchild, Negura Bunget, and Cabaret Voltaire are all equally inspiring to me. What I find most interesting is when artists say fuck it to conventions and blur the lines between genres or push the boundaries a bit further. 
	What is happening in the world and in my life (both good and bad) have always fueled the creativity as well. 



3.  There have been some great releases and remixes from you recently on labels like Minus, AmAm, Thoughtless, etc.. What do you have coming up in the pipeline?

Thanks! I have a few remixes coming up. I just did a couple for fellow Portlander JAK which will be released on Trapez this year. I am really excited for JAK’s release and have been a long time fan of that label. Also, remixes for Jay Zoney and the UK synth duo Rescue A Family are coming. Other than that, I’ve been working on a project that is more experimental, as well as getting back to some of my own techno stuff. 


4.  Any chance of future Barada/Bryan Zentz live sets, or possibly a resurrection of Disruptor?

Oh man... It’s been almost a decade since I’ve done one of those. I’m not even sure of how I would go about doing it these days as my setup and way of making music has changed so much. It does cross my mind pretty often though... maybe one of these days (I think I said that last time) : P
	About Disruptor: I think that label will probably continue resting in peace in the Techno label graveyard. The goal with that was to fuse different influences: mainly Dub music with Techno but in a different way than say the Basic Channel school (though I’m obviously a huge fan of that approach). The label pretty much died when my distributor went under. Nowadays, there seems to be plenty of things Dub related out and about—I don’t really know how Disruptor would fit into the scheme of things and if there would be a need for it. Having a label again would be cool though, mainly to be able to present things a certain way. But I would probably start with something fresh and new. 


5.  Outside of music, what else do you like to do in your free time?  

When there is free time to be had, I mainly ride my bike, rent movies, try and keep my cats out of trouble, sometimes be social, sometimes be antisocial, drink overpriced coffee drinks, check out a show or club here and there, and do my best to remain mindful. And on that note, the movie rental recommendation of the month is: The Railway Man.

Currently he is the Art Director for Seattle’s Decibel Festival. Interview:
1.You were born and raised in Detroit, what were your main sources of inspiration in your early years, what brought you into electronic music?

I stated listening to punk and other alternative indie music at an early age (exposed by fellow skateboarders and school friends). As the years passed I developed a taste for industrial, experimental and ambient. Not soon after I discovered techno and electro (techno-bass) while randomly attending some of Detroit’s notorious loft and warehouse events. In the mid-90’s IDM began to hit the scene along with my love for Jungle. And now I adore a plethora of it all.

2.Early releases of yours were picked up by Shitkatapult/Musick, how did that relationship begin?

That happened in 2003 when T.Raumschmiere came to Seattle on his debut tour and I handed him a 4 song CD-r demo and he actually listened to it right away in the green room of Chop Suey and he said “this is great! I’d like to release this”; naturally at the time I simply thought he was just being polite. But a few months later he emailed me stating that he was going to put the first two tracks onto some mini-compilations and that Shitkatapult would like me to submit more tunes for their upcoming sub-label, Musick (To Play In The Club). Ironically in 2004 I moved to Berlin for 6 months and I was able to focus on my music more and go on to release two solo EP’s with Shitkatapult/Musick. In addition to the releases I had the honor to perform at a few venues, one of which included the original Tresor.

3.Techno, IDM, and Electro all seem to blend into one inside your tracks.  What is your process for writing music?

I simply start with a sound that builds into a loop that eventually gets constructed in to a song. I never have an intent when starting, nor a locked-down process. It’s typically an experimentation and I just let it develop. When I’m satisfied with that development I’ll go back to either add to or subtract from the song to get it’s end result. 


4.What is Modern Occcult Musick?

In a mother’s womb (nutshell - M.O.M.), it’s my digital label for self-releasing. I figured why wait in another label’s roster for my EP’s to get released when I can issue my songs on my own imprint and have the freedom to create all the content. M.O.M. will house and nurture my finer and fringe projects. Modern Occcult Musick from a Modern Occcult Musician.


5.Outside of music you are a very prolific artist and graphic designer.  How do you separate the 2 artist entities and how do you merge them together?

It has always been a symbiotic relationship. Electronic music, specifically, has always inspired my graphic arts; especially in the earlier years because most of the older techno never had any vocals (lyrics) telling me what to think or how to feel and that allowed my imagination to become more visually free to experiment with graphics and other visual art. Now-a-days my visuals help produce my sounds.

Jerry Abstract - From 0-1 Studio Sessions Vol 075

Sone is Seattle based DJ and Producer Brian Sonnleitner. His first exploits into music was being immersed in the underground punk scene growing up in Wisconsin during the 90′s. Then late one August evening, after witnessing Chris Liberator melt his mind, Brian shifted gears into pursuing his passion for techno full time. Sone is now a DJ of over a decade, his sets are stuffed full of tension ranging between the deep and dark to heavy big room sounds but, without fail, maintaining the element of the dance floor. While keeping his philosophy of “the best techno is simple and effective”.

2008 brought Brian into the realm of production with his tracks exploring the bigger and darker side of techno. His original productions and remixes appear on his home label, From 0-1, which he runs with long time friend and cohort Milkplant, Slant Records, Audio Autopsy, Rheostatus, and Subspec to name a few. His remix contest for the track “Recovery Mode”, released on From 0-1, received far reaching interest and support with submissions coming in from all over North America and Europe. One of Seattle’s brightest up-and-comers, the years ahead will surely see his impact on the Northwest and beyond.

Sone - From 0-1 Studio Sessions Vol 076

Lost in the Machine is the collaboration of producers/djs Patrick Gil and David Javate. Based in San Francisco, the pair formed a friendship over a common love of techno. With a subtle style which is rooted in history yet focused on now, what results is music which aims to immerse the listener in the groove.

As a resident DJ for Direct to Earth, Patrick Gil has released tracks on labels such as Gynoid Audio, Translucent and Fierce Animal, and has received track support from artists such as Jeroen Search, Pfirter, and Luke Hess. Veteran DJ David Javate has been exploring the crossroads of house and techno since the early 90s, and has played alongside artists such as Derrick May, Tim Xavier, Stacey Pullen, Dustin Zahn, John Tejada and Mike Huckaby, in addition to being a guest at Portland’s Closer Festival, Denver’s Great American Techno Festival, and San Francisco’s techno standard [KONTROL].

With strengths in both DJing and production, Lost in the Machine had their debut release “Hyde Street” in February 2013 on Hypnotic Room Dub series, receiving positive support from artists such as Slam, Audio Injection, Advanced Human, and Mattias Fridell. Choosing to focus on quality rather than quantity, this duo is one to watch as the year unfolds.

5 Questions with Lost in the Machine:

1) So who is Lost In The Machine, and how did the project come about?

David Javate: Lost in the Machine consists of myself and Patrick Gil. Lost in the Machine essentially represents the feeling of being immersed in the groove, either while dancing, DJing or in the studio. We seem to have a common ground in grooving, spacy and stripped down techno.  Patrick & I have very complimentary skill sets in production and DJing, in addition to musical tastes which are well grounded in techno foundations but with a forward thinking twist.

I've been DJing techno and deep house since the early 90s, and Patrick has been producing tracks for the last couple years w/ releases on Gynoid Audio, Translucent and Fierce Animals. Patrick & I became friends after I played at a Direct to Earth party in Oakland back in 2011. Patrick also checked out one of my podcasts and noticed that we had very similar tastes in techno. Since we had a common ground musically, we started jamming out in the studio and Lost in the Machine was born.

Patrick Gil: David began stopping by my studio a little over a year ago. I showed him how I go about making tracks, and his years of experience turned into some really nice input and collaboration.


2) You guys are from San Francisco, what are your thoughts regarding Techno in the SF Bay Area right now? What about Techno in the States in general?

DJ: I'm actually from the East Coast, outside of Washington DC, so my roots are a mix of UK, Belgian, New York & Detroit techno, and I moved out to San Francisco back in 1998. In regards to the San Francisco Bay Area, straight up techno always seems to ebb & flow.  It isn't as popular as other genres of dance music in the Bay Area, but there is a dedicated audience that comes out of the woodwork when quality talent comes to town. Ever since [KONTROL] ended in 2012, other promoters have been picking up the slack and bringing in great talent like Peter Van Hoesen, Function, Donato Dozzy, Rrose, Tim Xavier, Dustin Zahn and Silent Servant, just to name a few. Unfortunately, 222 Hyde, one of the best venues for dj culture in San Francisco, recently closed so there may be a temporary lull in events while promoters sort out other venues, or until a new venue comes up.

In regards to techno in the US, I  don't travel as much as I'd like so I can't make an all encompassing comment, but do manage to go to Movement in Detroit every year, and made it out to Denver's Great American Techno Festival in 2012.  Movement continues to inspire me with its mix of Detroit roots and cutting edge talent, while GATF in Denver was a breath of fresh air in its boldness and perspective on techno.  It's cool to see cities like Denver and Portland rise up w/ their own expressions of techno, while cities like New York, Detroit, San Francisco and Los Angeles continue to define what US techno is. Despite the growth of these techno festivals and the popularity of mainstream "EDM', I think techno will always be cutting edge, underground music that not every one will get…and that's fine with me.

PG: SF is a super rad place to be for dance music. Though the more 'purist' techno vibe isn't as represented all the time, there's still plenty of good stuff out here. For example, Silent Servant is going to be playing on a Sunday coming up; not too many places in the States where that happens. I personally am not that into it when its too heavy or banging, or most importantly, when its too monotonous. I'm glad I'm here, thats for sure...except maybe sometimes its too much fun! I don't know many who would deny that techno in the US doesn't thrive the same way that it does in Europe; but its a smaller and tighter community and I like it that way.


3) You guys recently had your debut release on 'Hypnotic Room Dub Series' which received good attention from the Techno world. Do you have anything else in the works right now?

DJ: Yeah, we were pretty happy to get good feedback from the likes of Slam, Audio Injection, Advanced Human, Mattias Fridell and Paul Boex of Abstract Division. We don't jam out as much as we'd like though as we're both occupied with our own individual gigs and productions, but we have finished up a couple tracks.  The ultimate test for me is whether or not I'll play it at a gig, so out of all our material I'd say we have 2-3 more tracks coming up.

PG: I've been super duper busy but there's definitely been some great studio days in there. There's a couple tracks that are playable, and one of them made it on the podcast. I don't mind playing a track out for a long time before it goes on a label. Currently we haven't sent out anything to any labels other than Hypnotic Room.

4) Favorite studio gear, and why?

PG: I like a healthy mix between Hardware and Software. The machines are easier to get a vibe going quickly, but the software and plug-ins are better for constant tweaking. I like the Monomachine, Kraftzwerg, Juno 106, Aalto, and FM8. I like plug-ins from Soundtoys, Sonnox, Sugar Bytes, and Audio Damage

DJ: For me it's my ears and my opinion. Patrick's more of the studio whiz/nerd than me.  Although I know my way around the studio, he can usually get our ideas done quicker. 

5) Best show in San Francisco in the last 12 months?

DJ: That's tough one because there's always top notch talent coming through the City.   Direct to Earth's Pool Jam with Dustin Zahn & Raiz was a fun one but I'm biased because both Patrick & I played at it.  [KONTROL]'s closing party with Heiko Laux was killer, As You Like It's party with Function, Silent Servant & Rrose was a fun one, as was The Bunker hosting Voices from the Lake with Donato Dozzy and Neel.  As far as personal gigs go, it's a tie between playing after Octave One and playing before Cesare v. Disorder at Housepitality.

PG: Hmmm. Like Dave said, As You Like It with most of the Sandwell District crew was amazing. That was my birthday. I also really liked seeing and hearing Atom TM and Tobias. But the very best show of the last year for me was seeing Marcel Dettmann play for the Droid Behavior crew in LA. Seeing Marcel or Ben Klock play is like going to church. Classic and pure techno, with music all over the board. Brand new vinyl promos, old 90's tracks I missed out on, and even some straight up house. Thats as good as it gets for me.

Chris Rusu, is on the verge of becoming one of the household names for any DJ with a sense for great hidden act worth supporting; Chris is just that. Hailing from Madison, Wisconsin and with plenty of producing experience under his belt, he is determined to blow up in a matter of time. Chris has had continuous support from Richie Hawtin since early 2009- and many others such as Dubfire, Skoozbot, Ambivalent and many others.

5 Questions with Chris Rusu:

1. We all fell into electronic music one way or another. Where did it all begin for you?

My first time hearing electronic music was when I was about 13. My older friend was into jungle so he would take me to a local record store here in Madison and I would dive into all the crates until I came across a sound I fell in love with Techno. At the the time it was mostly Chris Liebing, Marco Carola, Adam Beyer and Rino Cerrone. Later on Minimal really grabbed my ear and lots and lots of Minus track were purchased. At the time Gaiser, Skoozbot and Richie Hawtin were huge influences into what I do now.

2. In the mid/late 90's and early 00's it just seemed like Midwest electronic scene could not be beat. What is your opinion on the current state of affairs?

I feel when I started to DJ in 2000 - 2001; Ableton Live and Final Scratch just started to make there way into DJ set ups. From there a wave or purists vs "future forward" DJ's split. I remember some people not showing up to great shows just because they didn't mix on records. I enjoy all sets from any styles. I recently listen to a mix from someone using reel to reel it was brilliant.
Now that Traktor, Ableton and Serato are more excepted I think we are moving forward fairly quickly. And the new kids don't give a shit who's using what. They just want to get into the scene and fast. That has it's pluses and minuses but I feel like as a community we are growing and are more excepting of different styles and ways to express ourselves in the DJ booth.

3. This is my favorite question to ask since everyone's approach is so different. What is your current production and performance setups?

For my DAW I use Image Line's FL-Studio Producer addition. I just have my Xone 1D for MIDI - automating my channels FX-EQ etc.
A beautiful pair of JBL 4328 reference monitors and a pair of AKG 701 headphones for the three in the morning listening.
For mixing I use Traktor Pro, 2 A&H Xone 1-D's, Korg Zero 4 mixer/MIDI and a pair of Ultrasone DJ-1's.

4. When not dj-ing and producing music, what do you spend your time doing?

I brew ALLOT of beer. I actually went to school for brewing at Siebel Institute. I took the Web-based Associate in Brewing Technology Program. If i wasn't pursuing music I would be trying to start a Nanobrewery. I also love painting, photography.

5. What's in store for Chris Rusu this year, upcoming projects, gigs, etc?

I just recently joined Dubfire's label Sci+Tec Digital Audio. So there will be a release hopefully out soon. I also am working on trying to finish up another release with Brood Audio and have something in the works with new Minus artist - Justin James and his new label FUSE.
As far as shows go I hope to get some momentum after the release comes out with Sci+Tec and the other labels.

John Templeton is found in many corners of Colorado techno making appearances as s a DJ, promoter, and front man for Emote Music. He teamed up with friends to put together the venue in Denver called the Would Shop. It provided late-night debauchery for touring DJs, while serving as an indoor skateboard park by day for young degenerates. He is also a key cog in kickstarting and running the Great American Techno Festival, an annual techno festival in downtown Denver.
Templeton currently resides in Denver, where he enjoys freestyle walking and raising chickens.

5 Questions with John Templeton:

1. You are one of the main heads behind the Great American Techno festival in Denver. What was the impetus for creating this festival?

The Great American Techno Festival started because of our love of American techno. There is also a large craft beer festival in Denver called, Great American Beer Festival, so the name played off of those two things. With regards to the lineup, however, we wanted to showcase American techno talent and have a weekend dedicated to all-American artists.

2. Where do you see the festival in 5 years, how would you like it to develop?

Hopefully the festival can grow to where we can expand the lineup and have multiple events around the city simultaneously, and/or a large open-air, all-ages event. There are so many impressive venues all around the Denver metro area that we want to try new places moving forward to showcase various parts of the city and region.

3. Denver has surfaced as a Techno destination as of late, not so much flyover country anymore, why is that? Who are some local players the world's Techno community should be aware of?

I think Denver has grown for several reasons, but mainly it's because of the growing population. The city has become a moving destination for young adults, and there are a lot more people here now than say 10-20 years ago. Denver also has added new medium-sized venues with nice sound such as, NORAD Dance Bar. These have allowed for more underground acts to hit Colorado taking advantage of flight shares to the west coast.
Locally, we have quite a lot producers who are doing unique work. Ten & Tracer is a wonderful downtempo/electronic producer who is about as talented as it gets. Mick Finesse has been honing his sound, which combines industrial, techno, and post-punk genres into a gritty-type of techno. David Last is another extremely talented musician and producer, who doesn't DJ, but has a fantastic live PA. As for a young up-and-comer, keep an eye out for FRGMNT, who will be making waves soon enough.

4. You also run the Emote Music label, any good stuff coming up we should be on the lookout for?

At Emote Music we are trying to showcase some Colorado talent as well just putting out stuff that Jacob Todd and I like. Jacob owns the label, and I have been heading up the A&R for the last three years. We have a our first full-length album coming out by a really talented young woman in New York City who goes by the name Soramimi. We are really pumped about that release which will have some follow-up EPs with a talented pool of remixers. Jacob has also been featuring his new Whitespace moniker, which is a more techno-oriented sound, but one that is really starting to take off.

5. Beyond Techno, Denver is on the edge of the Rocky Mountains. If someone were to come to the GATF, and also want to check out Colorado's other offerings in terms of nature, where would you send them? Any amazing secret mountain hideaways that one must see?

This is probably the hardest question because there is so much to do in Colorado, especially in September when GATF takes place. Hiking, rock-climbing, white-water rafting, horseback riding, camping, and mountain biking are all available in Denver or within an hour drive any where west, northwest, or southwest of the city. This is one of the main reasons why we have GATF in September - to allow people who are visiting Denver to take advantage of the myriad of outdoor activities available in the region.
A nice mountain hideaway is James Peak Wilderness, which is about an hour and twenty minutes northwest of Denver by car. Wilderness areas have more federal protections and restrictions than national parks and national forests. It's a great place to get away from cars and ATVs to truly get the Colorado outdoor hiking, backpacking and camping experience. It's also free to access James Peak, which is a nice plus in comparison to Rocky Mountain National Park, which is further away from Denver, and also charges $15 for admission.
