Shika no Tone ('Call of Distant Deer') represents two deer calling to each other in the mountains in Autumn. The two voices come closer together, and are unified as a single voice at the end of the piece. 

Shika no Tone is one of the most venerated and frequently performed pieces in the traditional solo repertoire, known as honkyoku ('core pieces'). Honkyoku were created and transmitted by komusō ('priests of nothingness') of the Zen Buddhist sub-sect, Fuke-shū. Komusō were said to play the pieces to beg for alms, and for meditation to achieve enlightenment.

My teacher, Kaoru Kakizakai, invited me to record this piece with him for his most recent CD, 'Honkyoku 3'. If you would like to purchase the CD, send me an email.

The basis of F10ML (for 10 minutes longer) is an experiment with room's acoustics and random sounds, the influence of field recordings on the subsequent formation of an improvisational canvas.

Musicians generate sound tissue based on the 10 minutes that were recorder earlier in the same room. Thus, the pre-recorded period dictates the form of subsequent improvisation.

The final part is a direct recording of linear signals coming from each of the musicians, bypassing the reverberation of the room and other environmental influences - it is a layer hidden from hearing, manifested in the last ten minutes of the performance.

First presented on 20th of February 2015 at the Rotunda of the Vladimir Mayakovsky Central City Public Library (Saint-Petersburg, Russia).

NCT008 Tottumiskysymys featuring [ówt krì] - Tuhka (from "Tottumiskysymys" album)

Sergei Tumanov is a sound artist from Melbourne, Australia (originally from Saint-Petersburg, Russia). Sergei is a member of different projects with local and foreign musicians and artists. He is mainly working with experimental music and sound art.

Sergei is also the founder of NCTMMRN (Australian based independent record label) and co-founder of UNDER SOUND (international independent video label dedicated to different forms of visual art).

Sergei's music is mostly based on directions of improvised noise, drone and ambient genres. Sergei is also working as a sound-producer, composer and sound engineer for movie and video art projects.

Sergei is focusing on researching new ways of sound and sound extraction from different objects (electronic and domestic) and uses different sound/noise generators together with acoustic and electro instruments. Sergei is widely using field recordings and exploring the contribution between an artist and his environment (whether it is nature or city or anything else).
