We don’t need to bang on too much about how successful the original mixes of ‘Take Me Away’ and ‘New Dawn’ were for Exile and Mark XTC. They were obviously very pleased with the reaction though, so much so that the talented duo went back into the studio and crafted VIP mixes plus a brand new tune called ‘Pull Up’. What a treat!

The EP title track ‘Pull Up’ was doing the rounds in almost every DJs set on the planet just before the dreaded month of March. It’s tight yet simplistic style combines effortlessly with filtered out Amen breaks and single note bass stabs that do a great job of shaking whatever is in a 10 mile radius.

Without chucking the anthem status around too much, the original ‘Take Me Away’ was no doubt one of the big tunes of 2019 and the VIP simply adds a ton of variety to the mix whilst maintaining the character of the original. You’re going to love the pitch shifted vocals on this.

‘New Dawn’ also gets a cheeky update, retaining a lot of original elements including the singalong bass riff. One thing is for sure though, this VIP provides a ton of attitude and darkness. A tune that can be taken one of two ways really. You’re either going to look to the floor and shuffle your socks off or stand at the back, disappearing into the shadows. Whatever you choose, this one’s a stinker..

Everyone loves the word dubplate. It’s something that’s bashed about the scene pretty loosely these days but what’s serious amiss is that actual dubplates were pressed to promote tracks before promo copies were even considered.

Taking that fact into consideration you wouldn’t think Serial Killaz would even touch a release under the title ‘Dubplate’ without it being of serious quality would you? Of course not! 

This EP from Limited is firing all kinds of shots - bring forth the flamethrowers.

The title track, ‘Dubplate’ provided a staple amount of reggae infused new school jungle although the switch here is that the bassline layering is a combination of hefty subs and glossy metallic tones that physically rip through metal speaker mesh. If you’re watching the red lines, this one is a serious warning to sound engineers.

‘Gang Related’ has been bashed to bits by DJs currently supporting this EP and for a valid reason. It’s a nasty piece of filth that belongs in the gutter, the type of track you would only dare to drop in a really moody dance. Not one for the festival, not one for the radio - just smoke, lazers and darkness.

Switching things 360 degrees with ‘Colour’, a bright and upbeat number with plenty of funk and wobbles. It’s screaming out to be sandwiched into something equally as devastating and for those that understand the true meaning of double dropping, it’s going to be right up your street. Dangerous on it’s own, murderation in a link up.

‘Hit The Streets’ brings the vibe into new territory with plenty of panic ridden vocals, rumbling basslines and skippy swing breaks. Another moody track yet totally different to ‘Gang Related’ due to it’s upbeat breakbeat structure and vocal driven atmosphere.

Lastly ‘Ready’ and boy is this tune a big one! Incredibly well known vocal samples, gunshot effects and no-nonsense production make this an amazing end to the EP. The reversed speech effects combine effortlessly with the recurring “one two” which will have any crowd humming along (which certainly seems to be the in thing at present!).

Shots from the double chamber, Limited is set to cause a ruckus with his new EP this year and Serial Killaz are certainly not standing in his way!.

MVRK - Fourier [Premiere]

Lowriderz are back at it with another smasher of an EP and if you thought their previous ‘Jungle Wars’ EP from 2018 was good, then open your ears and get ready to one foot skank all over again. Released everywhere on 12th June, this collection of beats is nothing short of a welcome return to the world of Serial Killaz.

‘Back’ is one dangerous lead to this EP that would no doubt take anything in its path and give it a good bashing. You know the vocal sample already and wrapping this around a single sine wave is the perfect complement alongside the regular breakbeat switches. 

Distant Future and Steppa Style link up for the ride on ‘Dub Stye’ and ‘No Shop Talk’ respectively. Both feature heavy ‘96 influences with pitch bent basslines, tons of vocal shots and bubbling beats that will have you sticking flyers from the past all over your bedroom, flicking up a lighter and trying to invent a time machine.

‘Dubplate’ and ‘Stop’ could have been a double A side release and their stark variations compliment each other perfectly. On one hand you have a tough roller with a singalong style riff. The flip, more of a flexed out riddim, however, both contain that all important Serial Killaz element. Original roots and foundation.

The flavour for 2020 is without a doubt full circle from the mid 90’s and if Lowriderz have anything to do with it, long may it continue.

After thirteen years and over ninety releases, Med School has stacked the chairs and closed its doors. As a final farewell to the label, the ‘Med School: Graduation’ compilation celebrates the life of Hospital Records’ once sister label, as well as the musicians and culture that defined it, with 23 brand new tracks from label stalwarts such as Bop, Keeno, Etherwood and Whiney as well as the new blood that was always so important to the label’s experimental output.

In Med School fashion, the album brings together a myriad of drum & bass stylings and beyond. From the microfunk movements of Bop to Illexandra’s warped emergency warnings, Lakeway’s upfront grime beats to the unique electronic musings of Frederic Robinson, A.Fruit and Kimyan Law.

Representing the serene side of Med School is Etherwood’s ‘Nowhere To Go But Everywhere’, alongside beautiful contributions from Keeno, Natus and Polaris. The tribal infusions of Royalston’s stepper ‘Mark’s Shibari Groove’ and Lung’s techno-fused rabbit hole ‘Stop Crying’ switch up the pace to reflect the breadth of Med School’s outputs. The compilation also calls back to the very beginnings of the label with a special VIP treatment of S.P.Y’s first release in the Hospital camp, MEDIC1 ‘Black Flag’.

Whiney not only brings in his deep new stepper ‘Close To You’ but is also the man behind the continuous mix on the album, seamlessly bringing together all 23 tracks for one final salute to Med School Music.

Upgrade’s return to Serial Killaz is like a long lost friend coming back for one last bonkers session. Whatever this guy does simply oozes quality but not the glossy, hand buffed type you may be thinking, no way mate, not in a million years. Upgrade’s production is simply a combination of a raw, no fucks given attitude and years of doing whatever he wants and quite simply - it works. One of the many reasons he’s always welcome at our door.

‘Base’ has already had an exclusive via UKF and caused countless posts of upset regarding the spelling of everyone's favourite frequency. Simply put, if you like a double bass and a ton of heavy breakbeats to knock your block off - this one you. ‘Function’ harks back to Upgrade’s jungle roots with a hard slap of trademark Serial Killaz. A tune no doubt made with the label in mind.

The EP title track ‘First Request’ changes direction, flips the script and does a 360 headspin. Muddy bass, hints of classic beats and some epic percussion makes this a go to intro tune. Listen carefully and you might even get a taste of some Bristol influence here.

Slicing up the end, Upgrade comes with ‘Gangbeasts’ alongside Newcastle donny Scudd. Engage the rebels, stick your head down, embrace the haze and get down to this. Darkside business.
