Without further ado, we proudly present the third entry in the DJ MATTY MIX ARCHIVE.  This is one of DJ Matty’s most known and enduring mixes and it’s also the one that solidified his arrival onto the Florida DJ circuit: IN DEEP THOUGHT.  

By 1993, there was already no shortage of DJ’s in Florida and only so many “main room” gigs to go around. As a newcomer on the scene, Matty realized that by casting a wider musical net he could parlay his love of “ambient electronica” into more DJ gigs in the alternate rooms at venues like Simons (The Roof) in Gainesville, Firestone (The Den) in Orlando, Masquerade (The Opium Den at HUMP) in Tampa and perhaps most notably at Ft. Lauderdale Edge (The Patio) where he would often play the night-time into sunrise set.  

IN DEEP THOUGHT was recorded in October 1994 and perfectly captures the mood and energy of what DJ Matty would do in those special spaces —— of what it was like as he skillfully weaved in & out of both the beautiful and the strange. He would even play certain records at the wrong speed to somehow create an even more magical headspace amongst the dancers. We hope this mix resonates just as much for those that were not around during this time, as it does for those of us who were.

This is the third entry in a special archival playlist of DJ Matty being created with the help of his peers and oldest friends to preserve his legacy in the Florida underground. Most of the mixes we’re preparing have never been archived digitally, yet left an indelible impression on anyone who heard them along the way — just like the man himself! We will make sure DJ Matty's greatest mixes have a proper home online for years to come.

DJ Matty - In Deep Thought (October 1994)

Here we go with the second entry of the DJ MATTY MIX ARCHIVE. This time, it’s DJ Matty on the Rabbit Radio show for Colorado’s KTCL 933 FM which was hosted by none other than Rabbit In The Moon. By 2000, Matty had become a staple in the Florida scene, widening his musical repertoire from ambient / electronica sets to both main rooms and more intimate house music spaces like The Loft at Simons. In Tampa, he’d been building upon the culture by throwing two of the more memorable nights in the city’s history: his Thursday night party at The Left Bank, and then, together with Brian Busto for Reset Saturdays at Rain Lounge. This set was recorded at Rain Lounge and really captures how Matty had a knack for balancing his sense of humor with a sense of urgency when he played.
