From the little-known "Missa da Pacem," often attributed to Josquin Desprez but likely composed by his Flemish contemporary Noel Bauldeweyn (ca. 1480 - after 1515).  Based on the eponymous plainchant, "Da pacem."  Recorded by Michael Demeyer, live in concert at Old First Concerts, August 21, 2016, San Francisco, CA.

The impassioned plea "O Savior of the World, save us and help us," has been set by scores of composers throughout the centuries.  This five-voice setting is by the English Renaissance master, Thomas Tallis (ca. 1505 - 1585), and opened our August 2016 concert at Old First Concerts in San Francisco.  Live performance recorded by Michael Demeyer.

"4 motets pour un temps de pénitence" are among the most dramatic and harmonically complex writings by Francis Poulenc (1899 - 1963).  Known for embracing the musical trends of the twentieth century while still honoring his traditional upbringing, Poulenc purportedly said it was possible to "write new music using other people's chords."  This Passiontide motet is both arresting and tender; reflecting the intensity of the text ("Darkness and fear have overcome me") and the inner tension Poulenc experienced between his conservative past and his modern Parisian present.
