Uncut Quest Mix  for BBC Radio 1 (Annie NIghtingale)

Aggression. Tenacity. Energy. All three of these words can used to describe the on-going obsession of bass music in North America, and they can also be used to describe the young and thriving DJ career of Croatian-transplant Matej Batinic aka Matej B. 

On the eve of his performance at the monstrous Safe In Sound Festival in Kansas City, we were able to sit down with Matej for a special guest interview and mix tape as the Digital Rootz mix series rolls on!

UF: What first ignited your love for electronic music?
 
Matej: "The earliest introduction to electronic music for me was being shown The Fat of the Land by The Prodigy by my older brother. All it took was one listen of Firestarter and I was immediately hooked and had to have more haha."

UF: What inspired you to become a DJ and producer?
 
Matej: "DJ-wise, I was first insanely curious after seeing videos of guys like Grandmaster Flash, DJ Shadow, and Qbert. On the production side, guys like Nujabes, Flying Lotus, and King Tubby definitely  widened my scope as to what was possible with audio design.  As I got more into the dubstep front, the OGs of the scene really hit what felt like an untapped part of my being. Guys like Skream, Hatcha, Youngsta, Coki, Mala and later Excision and Datsik.  Seeing my now good friend Cyberoptics (who headlined the very first electronic show I attended) in action really steered me towards that side of the dubstep scene."

UF: If you could pick any festival, venue, or concert in the world to play at, where would it be and why?

Matej: "Hmm..this is a tough one. I have a that I’d consider at the top of my list. Shambhala Music Festival in Canada, because it’s rapid growth basically coincided with North American dubstep’s rise and the sets that come out of there always blow my mind!  50Hurtz in Amsterdam because the people in the crowd there are absolutely nuts and so passionate about the sound, naturally Red Rocks because I consider it to be the most gorgeous venue in the US, possibly even in the world, and maybe like some festival dominated by old-timers or tribute bands just to make some people uncomfortable haha."

UF: Are there any routines or superstitions you follow prior to performing a set? 
Matej: "I usually get a few good practice sessions in a few days out from the show, and do very little the day of. I actually don't even listen to any of the music I plan to play so that when I do drop it, it feels fresh! I tend to just meet up with a few friends, have a beer or two, joke around and just get up there and play what feels right :)"

UF: Give the listeners a brief description of your mix. 
Matej: "This mix was made to showcase the sound I hold closest to my heart. No filler, no bullshit, just bass music. I wanted to try and give the listener a glimpse into just how diverse this realm of electronic music really is. I’ve had a ton of fun experimenting with using classics in different ways while showing off exclusive content from some of my favorite producers, both rising and established. Hope you guys dig it, and as always feedback is much appreciated!"
