BOB HUMID - Driller Killer

Yay! - We did it. We just won the official SPEX-protest-song-competition with "Festung Europa", a song by the outstanding Leipzig-based Band Brockdorff Klang Labor for whom I produced half of the tracks of their forthcoming new Album... This one is an experimental and IDM-ish / breakbeaty tune featuring some subtle and ambiguous german lyrics that deal with the topic of immigration to Europe. Europa represented by the girly and seductive voice of Nadja von Brockdorff appears like a luring, promising and soothing but also slightly scary and brutal force.

The Song was originally composed and written by Brockdorff Klang Labor and used in an exhibition performance as an instrumental. The band later decided to implement this track on the forthcoming album and invited me to give it a typical Bob Humid treatment with some deeper Sound-Design and breakbeaty trickery. So we sat down together at Fat Of Excellence earlier this year.

				</a><br/>When Bob Humid, one of the most accredited producers in the Cologne electronic music scene and former third of the Electronic Body Music / Kunstlied-Formation “Der Liederkranz” in the late 1980s, teams up with Edda, who wasn’t around much back then, but has been making herself a name in the last few years as resident dj, burlesque performer and just overall artist, expertise and inquisitiveness collide.

Bob (also known as Robert Feuchtl) was born in Montevideo, Uruguay, but grew up in Germany for most of the time. Edda’s provenance is similarly obscure, blending a pint of irish blood and an ounce of teutonic heritage with a french origin. Both share a love for danceable but clever music and are just as well shapeshifters in terms of style as accquainted with time travelling, flirting exceedingly with both futuristic and retro elements, combining slick sounddesign with savage sawtooths.

While Bob Humid is mostly acknowledged for his advanced electronic breakbeat productions, Waving Not Drowning is more about glitzy glamour and daring debauchery than complicated tweakings and mindboggling metrics. Edda, who spins a seemingly disparate, but ravishingly frantic choice of post punk and new wave, grime and break beat, decadent disco and glittering techno, contributes voice, lyrics and co-production in the construction of these little hybrid gems, cramming her entire musical influence into the process.

Waving Not Drowning [Edda & Bob Humid] - Ectoplasm Spasm [Ectoplasma]

I recently found myself playing this dark and housy tune in actual warm-up or late night moments more frequently. "My House Is Black" is a more timeless remix-version of our Boxer Sport Release "Featherweight", from our tech-orientated house-project FEATHERWEIGHT that I form with the vocalist and music writer twila.too. more to be expected in the next months.

Musician, Super-Producer, DJ, Sound-Designer, Tutor and Technological Writer. Christian Kalinowski aka NUMINOS is a man with a phalanx of talents. Being an overly self-critical and detail-obsessed producer with a pumping heart for the british beats and the mighty dub-craft he rarely released tracks in the past years. He has come a long way from his early success in the german Hip Hop band Indeed (together with DJ Lifeforce & Uh-Young Kim) and that’s probably where the funk or his musicality derives from. This and the fact that he is also a learned piano-player. Of course there where prolific flirts with the UK-based PAGODA Records crew and skillful remixes for Bob Humid’s SERVE & DESTROY and earlier BORED BEYOND BELIEF Imprints, dozens of highly inspired DUB-Liveacts in Cologne’s underground (Electro Bunker, Why Beep?, Encounters Of The Ambient Kind, Mos Eisley, Silberschwein, Propellor Knights) and countless studio-jobs for other clients and artists, but we had to wait an eon for his first real debut-EP.

“Eyjafjallajökull” (named after that moody icelandish volcano that hold europe’s airplanes in its grip for months) is a musical description that breaths the spirit of humbleness before nature’s power and magnificence while it might very well throw you inside boiling lava in the next moment. To complete that goal a handful of renown remixers of germany’s electronic breakbeat underground have tuned into their personal view on that topic. Desmond Denker (Basspräsidium), Noize Creator (Suburban Trash), Echology (Uncanny Valley) and Bob Humid (Serve & Destroy Rec.) have all tweaked their machines to the extremes. This is Dubstep in its most playful variance and versatility.

Bob Humid - "How Many Fingers?" [Original Album Version]

"The hallmark of music, to my ears at least, is "does it stand the test of time". This track from Bob Humid is from 2001, but 'Preparation' sounds like it could have been made yesterday in any number of bunker-like studio's by mad electro scientist's who really need to get some sun. Glitch beats, but not to the point of distraction, a dark menacing void synth tone that stays where it should - ever in the background but letting you know it's there and creeping you out. Combine this with some deep bass drums for the speaker knockin' and you've got a track that tickles the abstract funny bone. This won't rattle any dancefloors, but it's not always about that is it? Recommended"

Bob Humid - "Preparation"

this is a jammed live-version of “how many fingers?”, taken from my album "second wind phenomenon" that i played on the spectacular “electric eclectic / phantomnoise records & suburban trash industries labelnight” on the 12th of may in 2007. the gig took place in the impressive moritzbastei in leipzig, a wide ancient cellar that was re-discovered in the early 1970ies. imho one of the most spectacular places in germany to perform as an artist. the track was jammed live with a yamaha rs7000. the intro consisted of the hyped and pumped-up noise-hiss of the analogue mixer that ran through a chain of alesis mod/fx (bitrman -> philtre -> smashup) units. the hiss suddenly appeared at the sound-check stage, so i spontanously decided to use it. 

thanx to klang sergej for the awesome introduction and announcement. best one so far. ;-)

Remix Job for the german Deep Fusion Jazz Combo Nachttierhaus. As with Jazz I'm more for a puristic approach so I took out the jammy solo-parts of the original and concentrated on the moodier and heavier parts of the track...
