Despite a classical training and having played principal oboe on occasion with orchestras such as the BBC Concert and Britten Sinfonia, anyone who knows Dom will vouch he’s not the most orthodox of oboists. In fact, performances of Berio’s Chemin IV with members of the Ensemble Intercontemporain and David Bedford’s Oboe Concerto with the London Mozart Players comprising a drum-n-bass movement are about as conventional as his oboe engagements get! Having studied jazz oboe and commissioned several new works for oboe and electroacoustics, Dom is widely recognised as one of the most versatile oboists on the London scene today. From collaborations with Courtney Pine to a recording of Jimi Hendrix’s Purple Haze for Tim Friese-Greene of Talk-Talk fame, anything alternative and Dom’s there!
Dom has played on several film scores including Eldorado (James Horner), The Rat (Bob Geldoff), Lost Souls (Jan Kaczmarek), Hunchback II (Hans Zimmer), Bridget Jones Diary (Patrick Doyle) and Hannibal (Hans Zimmer). TV work has included adverts for the Discovery Channel, the Cadbury’s Flake oboe jingle for Coronation street, ITV dramas such as ‘Where the Heart Is’ (Graham Presckett), ‘Thursday 12th’ (Peter Salem), ‘The League of Gentlemen’ (Joby Talbot) and even a rendition of Baa-Baa Blacksheep on Tellytubbies!
On the pop scene Dom has played live and recorded with Paul Weller and featured on albums for bands such as ‘Gay Dad’, ‘Francis Magiulli’, ‘Judge Dredd’, ‘ZZ Possi’, ‘Ed Harcourt’, ‘Naomi Streimer’, ‘Declan Galbraith’ and ‘Elbow’. Dom also appeared in a music video for the band ‘Spiritualised’ with a music stand wrapped around his head!
Dom manages The English Session Orchestra which has featured on Aled Jones’ last four albums [UCJ] and in the feature film ‘If Only’ starring Jennifer Love-Hewitt. Dom came joint-first in the UK finals of the Sony International Oboe Competition.
