The late James Brown aside, you won’t find anyone with a more visceral connection with soul than Session Victim in the midst of a DJ set.
Their live set pitches the energy levels up even further, the frenzied head banging of two friends jamming like their lives depend on it, now a signature scene.

Since the success of their bedroom-produced debut LP took them a little by surprise in 2012, Hauke Freer and Matthias Reiling have formalised their ad hoc studio jams and fanatical sampling sessions into something resembling a schedule, but besides that, refreshingly nothing much has changed about the friendship spanning two decades and a regular Hamburg to Berlin studio exchange. 

With their record collections spanning several decades of hip hop, funk and soul as well as frequently vinyl-only house and techno selections, it’s their passion for uncovering dusty vinyl treasures and the soul that can be captured on a miniature moment in wax that inspires both their DJ sets and production environment. 

Session Victim’s second long player ‘See You When You Get There’ released at the end of last year was featured highly on various ‘Best of 2014’ lists, including XLR8R and DJ History. Respected contemporary and head of Pampa Records DJ Koze, also added his own seal of approval by remixing their track “Hyuwee” for the DJ Kicks 50th compilation.

The last six months have also seen celebrated releases from solo endeavours, with Hauke’s EP on new vinyl only imprint ‘XK’ being repressed several times and Matthias returning to hugely respected label Giegling to release his first solo EP since 2011.

The next Session victim EP will drop on the newly resurrected Retreat (the vinyl only label Hauke runs with Quarion) this summer and forthcoming Session Victim remixes include a seminal 1996 Boris Dlugosch track on Peppermint Jam and a remix on Gomma.

As we roll into festival season, June will see Session Victim make their Glastonbury debut, adding to their global roll call of the best underground parties and festivals in the world and their conversion of new fans dance floor by dance floor.

Rounding up a year which saw crucial releases from Iron Curtis and Quarion, »Can’t Help It« is the long awaited return of sample wizards Session Victim to the ep format. This Retreat 3-tracker is a profound, subtle and quite melancholic affair, perfect for those emotional moments in the early morning. Skillfully arranged and featuring the impeccable playing of Linnart Ebel, »Can’t Help It« is once again an essential statement from one of House Music’s most fascinating duo.
»Pass The Diesel« begins with a stuttering beat, seagull like noises and muted chords that wouldn’t be out of place on a vintage Group Home instrumental. Staying on the aquatic tip, Session Victim introduce a beautiful Rhodes sequence which takes the track into a dream-like – dare we say californian? – direction. Spiced up with gentle synth noodlings, ethereal vocal snippets and a magical strings motive, »Pass The Diesel« bathes in the deeper shades of House without ever drowning in a cliché, thanks to its snapping drums and vivid arrangement.
Slowing things down a notch, »Hyuwee« starts off with what is maybe the most unconventional instrument in Session Victim’s repertoire, the banjo! But the fear of witnessing these down-to-earth-boys actually becoming the boys-down-south vanishes after 30 seconds: a melancholic 3-Chord theme, snappy 808 patterns and funky drum fills lead the tune in a familiar (but vast) territory. Linnart Ebel’s talent is put to great use with subtle guitar licks that give a lively feel to the whole song. You will notice that Session Victim have labeled »Hyuwee« as an »instrumental«. Does it mean that we can expect a vocal version in the near future? All bets are on as to who will provide the vocals to this one …
Flip the record over for the magnificent »Tearwiper«, a slow-house groover which might be Session Victim’s deepest excursion on wax so far. Abyssal chords, radio effects and a dragging 105 bpm beat set the stage for a grand sonic adventure. The track breaks down after the introduction of the guitar theme and a warm sub bass takes center stage in order to drive »Tearwiper« in a confident manner. Shakers and bubbling synths are floating around whereas Linnart’s hypnotic playing provides a steady backing to the bassline. Another breakdown and the elements are nicely washed away while a thoughtful guitar solo brings this underwater journey to an end.

Copenhagen‘s infamous producer, songwriter & DJ wizz-kid just released his new album, entitled ‘Fool‘.

In 2010 - while having already gained notoriety as a DJ and Producer - his album debut ‘Standing On Top Of Utopia‘, confirmed his presence on an even grander level. Radio friendly, intelligent and feel-good electronic pop never sounded so fresh.

Now with ‘Fool‘ Kasper continues his wild and ecstatic journey into the future of music. The second single to feature from the new long-player is the casually cool ‘Deep Is The Breath‘. Now a permanent fixture in Kasper‘s more song-based endeavours, Murder and I Got You On Tape vocalist Jacob Bellens features alongside up-coming talent Emma Acs in the tantalising original. A typical mixture of throbbing electronic pop and heartfelt songwriting, this first taste of ‘Fool‘ is sure to alight your curiosities and even more.

Wolf + Lamb‘s PillowTalk take centre stage next with their remix, featuring Tone of Arc. Lively, organic and expertly produced, their mix has a live-jam feel complete with classic dub-style vocal cuts and trippy synth lines swirling around the bassy, slightly broken-beated groove. A melodic chorus greets us mid-way before more throw-down inducing deepness.
