Hard to believe it’s been 3 years since Jungle Fire first graced the RNT Catalog, and now the west coast boys of summer are back with a 5-track remix EP of varied Latin soul funk vibes, reimagined by a stellar cast of remixers. On the A-side, Colombian juggernaut Felipe Gordon takes Atómico fully nuclear with a stomping bass-heavy house remix, and JKriv goes elektrik with his Elektrikossa dub that sprinkles dubbed out and acid elements over a pulsating rubbery groove. On the flip, turntablist Nu-Mark delivers a punchy breakbeat take on Atómico, Jungle Fire member Patrick Bailey goes full-on boogie vibes with his Snake In Da Bronx Dub of La Kossa, and the record winds down with the dubby halftime flavor of Samual Miles remix of Biri Biri. As our favourite victims head off to San Francisco and their stateside studio of choice known as Room G to put the finishing touches to their third LP, we have a beautiful little taster of what to expect in the form of the Matching Half EP.

The rise and rise of Session Victim is well documented and even more well deserved seeing as the German duo continue to blow minds and cause waves of joy at every gig they play whether it be their high octane live show or vinyl only DJ sets. As if they weren’t busy enough with their touring they’ve also been finding an incredible flow in the studio, and after recent chats to the boys, they’re visibly excited and bubbling about how they’re finding themselves in the most creative and positive minds to date. No difficult third LP scenario for them then!

Fresh off the back of releases and remixes on Retreat, Toytonics, Boogiefuturo and Splendor & Squalour, we present you with their first original material of the year. Matching Half is classic SV, it’s fair to say. The boys build up a percussive, disco groove with a two-beat repeating rhodes riff which bounces around the kick drum
beautifully. Things build up simply and subtly to the breakdown four minutes in at which point a new piano progression signals the next section of blissed-out dancefloor euphoria. Once again, they’ve managed to create a memorable, uplifting, warm and jazzy track which will stick firmly in your head. And not a vocal in sight!

Flip over for Up To Rise which uses a similar sound palette and once again we have a disco-edged balearic instrumental whose strengths lie in the dubby, improvised feel, no doubt stemming from their late-night live studio jams. Simple guitar hooks and ad-libbed vocals add to the human feel which Session Victim always inject by the bucket-load. This track has been getting an amazing reaction from their recent live shows.

Finally we have none other than Byron The Aquarius on remix duties to give us his spin on Matching Half. The Detroit native should be known to most of you having had killer releases on both Kyle Hall’s Wild Oates and Theo’s Sound Signature. Here he adds a bit of that raw, Detroit attitude whilst keeping the soul truly intact. A skipping house groove bolsters the energy nicely and Byron incorporates some tasteful new parts to help make the remix his own. Classy stuff we hope you’ll agree.

Joel Holmes is a phenomenon that fits perfectly into the musical scenario of the next years. 35-year-old American jazz pianist and 4 times Grammy nominated. He was the musical director of Carl Craig’s Synthesizer ensemble as well as the keyboarder in legendary Grammy wining band of Roy Hargrove (the IT jazz artist from the late 1990ies, who later died.) 

Holmes is always hunting for the new, so he moved to Berlin a few years ago. Being interested in what’s happening in that new dance world. Similar to Jazzers from the 1970ies like Herbie Hancock and Quincy Jones who turned into disco stars Joel, the jazzer wanted to connect with the new Berlin electronic scene. He succeeded, teamed up with upcoming London house kid Cody Currie and the Toy Tonics crew who is working on new sounds in Berlin that connect the organic and jazz musicians scene with the dance and house world. Developing a new style of Jazz-House… (that has nothing to do with sampled jazzy‘ house! If you know what we mean). 

Joel and Cody Currie released 2 EPs that had a good buzz mainly in the UK and USA. Big support from the Worldwide FM and BBC Radio world as well from tastemaker DJs such as Bradley Zero, Gilles Peterson and Masters at Work.

While working on these EPs Joel created a kind of new jazz-dance universe around him in Berlin. He curates a bi-monthly jam session in an underground location where the crème de la crème of the international ex-pad -musician scene meet up. Joel became THE MAN to hang out when American musicians come to Berlin. Like when Erykah Badu was doing her Berlin gig in Berlin in 2019, after the show all the band moved to Joel's place to have a legendary jam session. Yes, there is a lot of happening in the new Berlin Jazz meets Electronic scene. And Joel Holmes is in the center now.

So it’s time for a Joel Holmes Solo EP. The EP was recorded in a couple of jam sessions. Later reworked and co-produced by Kapote and Sam Ruffillo and mixed by Justin Vanderfolgen from DFA in New York.

It’s a big step for Joel Holmes. He started to sing in a very smooth, deep way. He wanted to make dance tracks that have a song structure and should not be too static, but still be playable in good DJ sets. And that's what you get: A Lot of Soul. Deep House vibes in a New York style and Joel's skills as a keyboarder.

Joel Holmes is a phenomenon, for sure. And this EP could be a manifesto for what he is doing in Berlin now.
