Under his Awanto 3 guise, Steven van Hulle has long been considered a producer with immense potential. Now, he’s finally delivered on that promise with Opel Mantra, his stunning debut album.

To be released across three 12” singles between now and March (with all of the tracks to be collected together on CD at a later date), Opel Mantra twists house music into intoxicating new shapes, fusing a myriad of global influences into one thrilling, surprising whole. This is clandestine, atmospheric deep house as you’ve never heard it before. And boy, does it sound good.

Anyone with a keen interest in the Amsterdam electronic music scene will be familiar with van Hulle’s work. He’s already released a number of acclaimed solo singles on Rush Hour (his loose-limbed, decidedly cosmic debut, For Five, appeared in 2010), alongside highly regarded collaborations with fellow Dutch producers Tom Trago (under the Alfabet alias), Young Marco and San Proper. To date, though, his output has been limited to a handful of inspired productions.

Having had a glimpse of his talents, Opel Mantra proves his credentials once and for all. This first 12” in the series offers more than enough proof. Bristling with humid atmospheres, voodoo rhythms and tropical grooves, it fuses heavy African and South American influences with contemporary deep house sounds and grooves.

Remixer extraordinaire Eric Kupper takes a set of epic, lost recordings from 1982, that feature the cream of the crop session musicians behind the soulful Sound of Philadelphia - Earl Young (drums), Ronnie Baker (bass), Norman Harris (guitar), Lenny Pakula (organ), Larry Washington (percussion), Vince Montana, Jr. (vibes, keyboards), John Bonnie (saxophone) – along with powerhouse vocalists Joe Freeman, David Simmons, Bobby Love and Ron Tyson, and lovingly applies his own modern sheen, spinning them into ear candy for today’s listener as well as those who were there from the very beginning. These incredible remixes, which have individually been topping the charts on digital platforms, can now be had in one amazing collection that is not just a tribute to the past but a vibrant continuation of the legacy these legendary musicians helped create.

If you have been a following the underground disco scene the past few years, there is a good chance you have heard of Harry Wolfman before. Since 2011, the funk producer from London has managed to release tracks on prominent labels such as Dirt Crew Recordings, Razor-N-Tape, The House of Disco, Under The Shade, MTA Records, and Lost My Dog. Building a reputation as quite the prolific producer, Harry has decided to add another label to his growing list by coming out with the EP “Nemoto” on Dutch outfit OUTPLAY.

For those that are unfamiliar, the label is run by producers Hans Peeman (Junktion) and Daniël Leseman and recently came out with records by some of our favorites like Loz Goddard and Fouk. Now, with Harry Wolfman under their belt, OUTPLAY is beginning to solidify themselves as one of our most reliable sources of house music in the game.

In their 8th release, OUTPLAY has put out a four-track array of tunes that do well in showcasing Harry Wolfman’s range as a producer. From down-tempo melodies that sound like they have been taken from space to chopped-up basslines that seem hell-bent on making you dance, Mr. Wolfman shows that there isn’t much he can’t handle in the studio.

That being said, our personal favorite from the record has to be its lead track “Nemoto.” Clocking in at almost 10 minutes, this original weaves in elements of filtered house and unadulterated funk that act to lull the listener at points, while energizing them at others. In between these moments, Harry keeps things interesting by incorporating an assortment of modulated synths and memorable quotes like, “It was like disco was the Titanic and we were all on board…”

Although I wouldn't say this EP will make you sink like the Titanic, it will certainly help you get down! To get yourself a copy, simply follow this link right here.

We've got an absolute scorcher of a premiere for you lovely lot today courtesy of Jamie Odell aka @jimpster, whose new one 'Burning Up' is out 9th March on his own @freerangerecords. Released earlier this year as a very limited white label 10", the restless title track lands somewhere between Studio 54 and Swamp 81, strange as that sounds.

Jimpster remains a master of balancing functionality and character, and 'Burning Up' is no exception. Reduced to a killer cross-rhythm bass line and driving disco beats, it's ecstatic proof that you can cook up a delectable dancefloor dish with only the barest of cupboards.

A-side Don't Think Twice is a tightly modern and muscular re-imagining of some long-lost Paradise Garage-era gem, replete with head-snapping claps, an expansive sonic palette and full strut groove. While, low-slung flip-side Give My Love a Try rolls on a flirtatious arpeggiated bass-line and gasps of steamy synths that make it the perfect vibe to open or close a party. Lending soulful and sultry vocals across both cuts is Christian Holiday. Holiday darts in an off the slick synth stabs and bouncy live-drums of Don't Think Twice and reaches a yearning falsetto that draws out the romantic swoon of Give My Love a Try, helping elevate the scope and craft of both tracks.
 
Hooky and virulent, it’s a venerated sound that fits seamlessly into sets of Arthur Russell, ESGand Liquid Liquid classics with a crisp and deep production that remains infectiously of the moment. At parties from Brooklyn to Ibiza, this 12" will no doubt be a go-to slice of wax coaxing dancers to move a little closer all summer long.
