2020 yılı Türkiye-AB ilişkileri Doğu Akdeniz sorunu, Libya krizi gibi dış politik sorunların gölgesinde geçerken ilişkiler krizlerle dolu bir görüntü sergilemiştir. Bu krizlerin yanı sıra iki aktör arasında mülteci iş birliği, terörle mücadele ve güvenlik, enerji, ekonomi ve Gümrük Birliği gibi birçok fırsat ve iş birliği alanı mevcuttur. Üzerinde anlaşma sağlanamayan çok sayıda konu başlığı varken Türkiye ile AB ilişkilerini rasyonelleştirmek mümkün mü? İlişkilerde tehlikelerin ve gerginlik alanlarının yanı sıra fırsatlar ve iş birliği alanları nelerdir? AB ülkeleri Türkiye ile karşılıklı çıkarlara dayalı yeni bir iş birliğine yanaşmaya hazır mı? Türkiye-AB ile ilişkilerinde yeni bir sayfa mı açıyor?

Bu ve benzeri kritik sorulara cevap arayacağımız “Türkiye-AB İlişkilerinin Geleceği” başlıklı panelimiz 30 Kasım Pazartesi günü saat 21:00’da gerçekleştirilecektir. SETA Avrupa Direktörlüğü araştırmacısı Oğuz Güngörmez’in moderatörlüğünde gerçekleştirilecek olan web panele, SETA Avrupa Araştırmaları Direktörü ve Türk-Alman Öğretim Üyesi Doç. For many years now Turkey has been undergoing an important transition in the energy sector. The country is highly dependent on imported energy resources, including natural gas and crude oil, and as a result, it has developed and adopted several policies which promote the diversification of sources and, at the same time, decrease the dependency on imported resources. The increase of oil and natural gas exploration activities in the Black Sea and Eastern Mediterranean, the construction of the TurkStream pipeline, and the increase of the LNG share in the energy mix can be understood within this framework.

This panel aims at providing a better understanding of the latest developments in the natural gas market in Turkey. Our keynote speaker, Turkey’s Deputy Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Alparslan Bayraktar will briefly evaluate Turkey’s current policies in the energy sector. Afterwards, Ambassador (ret.) and former National Security Advisor to the German Federal Chancellery Bernd Mützelburg will analyze the United States’ approach to Nord Stream 2 and TurkStream, taking also into consideration the upcoming change in government in the U.S.

Turkey’s latest discoveries in the Black Sea are of great significance for the future of the energy sector. Within this context, Sohbet Karbuz, Director of the Hydrocarbons and the Energy Security Division at the Mediterranean Observatory for Energy (OME) will evaluate the discovery and its aftermath.

Lastly, Gloria Shkurti Özdemir, a researcher at SETA Foundation, will analyze the latest trends in Turkey’s natural gas trade.

Islamophobia is on the rise in France and Muslims are increasingly becoming of subject of restrictions and harassment. Especially after the horrible murder of French teacher Samuel Paty by an extremist (on 16 October), French Muslims are held somehow responsible for the murder of Paty. French Interior Minister, Gérald Darmanin, on 19 October called for the dissolution of Muslim anti-racist organisations, such as the Collective against Islamophobia in France (CCIF). Darmanin described these organisations as “enemies of the Republic”.

In this context, SETA will organize a web-panel titled “Islamophobia and Criminalization of Muslims and Muslim NGOs in France”. The web-panel will be moderated by SETA European Studies Director Enes Bayraklı and the panellists include, Farid Hafez from Georgetown University The Bridge Initiative, Chafika Attalai from Collective Against Islamophobia in France (CCIF), Yasser Louati from Justice and Liberties for All Committee in France and Monia Bouguerra from Coordination Against Racism and Islamophobia in France (CRI).

The lacking issue fields in question of regional actors – such as ideational commitment, economic cooperation, military and political coordination turn out to be a matter of competition that favors the external supremacy in the Middle East and North Africa. Such a pattern makes the individuals, peoples and states of the region more vulnerable to impacts of the modern times while being deprived of security, prosperity and political rights. In this sense, Turkey and Qatar have built a promising path to promote model of cooperation in the wider Middle East region. The cooperation of both points how to achieve a common understanding and an honest co-existence in the wider region. This panel will examine “why and how regional peace and stability can be mobilized for the common benefits of all individuals, transnational units and state actors with varying concerns, differing descents and, even, contradicting interests”. The Turkish – Qatar partnership will be assessed as the case study to scrutinize this question.  Web-panel discussion will be held in English. It will be broadcasted via Twitter, Facebook and Instagram. Journalists and embassies will be invited as audience.

The coalition led by the Vetëvendosje Movement (LVV) won the snap parliamentary elections in Kosovo on 14 February 2021 with a landslide victory. With its leftist, progressive, and anti-establishment stance, the LVV has long advocated for sweeping reforms for political and economic stability. As to foreign affairs, the party has adopted a nationalistic discourse regarding Kosovo’s relations with its neighbors and international actors. While its unprecedented electoral support shows the high expectations from the LVV, the prospective government will have to deal with serious issues such as the country’s longstanding socio-economic problems and its unresolved international status.

What are the historical and socio-political processes that led to the rise of the LVV and its victory in the latest elections? What will be domestic and foreign policy priorities of the prospective government in Kosovo? What are the wider implications of the election results against the backdrop of international politics today?

A web panel organized by SETA Foreign Policy Directorate will seek answers for the questions above and more. The event will take place on 25 February 2021, at 16:30 (Ankara time) with participation of Dr. Isa Blumi, associate professor of Turkish and Middle Eastern Studies at Stockholm University,  Leon Malazogu, former ambassador of Kosovo to Japan, Dr. Erhan Türbedar, independent analyst and former senior political advisor at the Regional Cooperation Council, and Engjellushe Morina, senior policy fellow at the European Council on Foreign Relations.
