This is both a new song and a public service announcement. 

I actually combined about four different concepts I've been working on and mashed them all together to create this. I hope to smooth it out a little more over time, but deadlines have once again intervened.

Tell Me So

This one was a little rushed, so I'll probably change it a bit in future. Lyrically, this one's pretty self-explanatory.

Odd Man Out

This one is the result of a Lyric Writing class assignment in which we had to write something based on folklore, mythology, or Shakespeare. I chose Shakespeare, and this song is inspired by the story of MacBeth. 

Fall From Grace

Without a doubt, this is my favorite John Hiatt song. He takes the simplest chord progression in all of music, but adds a variation in the harmonic rhythm that makes it incredibly unique.

I played all instruments (guitar, charango, piano, vocals, and penny whistle) except the mandolin, which was played by my very talented father Tod Campbell.

Cry Love (John Hiatt cover)

When I first wrote this one, I had a vision of how I wanted it to turn out. Thanks to the immense talents of Kevin Arndt on drums, Tristan Young on bass, and especially Marty Walsh on guitars, that vision was not only realized, but exceeded in ways I could never have imagined. 

Perpetual State Of Panic (Band Version)

Almost forgot I had this. This is a sound-alike project that I did back toward the beginning of this semester. Ideally, I would've had more time to replace some of the MIDI keyboard tracks (and my own rudimentary acoustic guitar playing) with real musicians, but deadlines are deadlines, so here it is. Drums are by Kevin Arndt, and bass is by Tristan Young.

Falling In Love (With My Best Friend) (Matt White Cover)

One of three "just for fun" covers I recorded over the holidays!

I know I've already got a couple of PG covers up here, but this has been a favorite of mine for years, so I finally decided to record a version of it. It's one of those songs like "In the Cage" that is so dark and dramatic that there really aren't any venues where I can perform it, but I wanted to show it to you all anyway. 

The lyrics relate the story of the book "Diary of an Assassin," the published scribblings of the man who tried to shoot George Wallace.

Family Snapshot (Peter Gabriel cover)

Another favorite obscure track. This is from the "Calling All Stations" album, the only album Genesis made after Phil Collins left the band. A friend enjoyed my rendition so much that she asked if I would record it, and so I have.

Shipwrecked (Genesis cover)

When I was still playing at the piano bar, I closed with this one on many occasions. Now that I'm not there anymore, I really missed getting to show off with it, so I decided to record a cover. Rather than just do a live performance, though, I decided to try spicing it up with multiple vocal tracks.

Drag Him To The Roof (Toto cover)

It was really only a matter of time before I recorded a cover of this one, as it's been one of my most frequent performance pieces for well over a year now. This particular arrangement was created as a midterm project for my Vocal Writing course at Berklee. Special thanks to Marie Lang for lending her fantastic voice to the harmonies!

Yes, I know my own vocals are a little rough. At the time of recording this, I'm dealing with some stubborn vocal complications, which I'm working with coaches to remedy. 

That's All (Genesis cover)

I didn't actually plan to post this, but people have liked it enough that I've decided to anyway. Please read the description!

Now I know what you're thinking: "ANOTHER Peter Gabriel cover!?" But this time, I have a good reason. This is the final project for my Vocal Writing course at Berklee. I had to do an a cappella arrangement, and I've always dreamed of doing one of "Solsbury Hill." Of course, when I first had that dream, my voice was still healthy. As I am now, this is the best I could pull together on a really tight schedule. There are definitely a few cringeworthy moments, but in my defense, YOU try recording seven tracks of your own voice and get them to line up perfectly! :) Here, it's the arrangement that counts, not so much the performance. With all that said, enjoy!

Solsbury Hill (a cappella Peter Gabriel cover)

This was my final project for my Digital Audio Workstation Writing and Production course at Berklee. Truthfully, I'm not hugely fond of this one, as I had to make it very pop, and the lyrics were rushed, but it's a new original, and the overall production came out pretty well, so I've decided to share it. All instruments are synthesized except the acoustic guitar and penny whistle, both of which I played.

Luiza Carvalho, the guitarist on the "Tell Me So" track, is a fantastic producer, so she tried her hand at mixing it. As it happens, her mix completely leaves mine in the dust. ;)

This was a composition for my "Advanced Production for Writers" course at Berklee College of Music. Our assignment was to compose a piece for strings and make a hybrid recording using both real string players and MIDI sounds.

One Last Shot (Instrumental Strings Composition)

For my Contemporary Writing and Production portfolio at Berklee, I needed to have an electronic piece. With my professor's blessing, I decided to transform my composition for strings (found elsewhere on my page here) into an electro-rock track. Admittedly, my initial reason for doing so was to save time amidst finals by not having to write a completely new piece, but in the end, reimagining the strings composition in this way proved to be a very stimulating, challenging, and enjoyable intellectual exercise. I can't decide which version of this song I like better. What about you?

One Last Shot (Electronic Version)

For my final project of my five-year Berklee career, I got the opportunity to do something I'd been fantasizing about since before I'd even gotten to Berklee, and that was to orchestrate a song by The Brew, my mentors' now-defunct rock band. Ever since I saw Peter Gabriel with his orchestra in 2011, the idea of taking a Brew song in that direction had been tantalizing me. In time, I settled on this lesser-known song as a starting point, finding it the most amenable to such an arrangement. When the time finally came in my Writing for Orchestra class to pick a song to arrange, I didn't hesitate for a moment. 

In coming up with the parts, I combined elements from the handful of incarnations the song had with The Brew over the years, taking ideas from the piano parts, guitar parts, bass parts, and even drum parts, and finding ways to fit them into an orchestra. For the final recording, our professor, widely-acclaimed arranger Bill Elliott, contracted a seventeen-piece orchestra and a studio out in Roslindale, where each student went to conduct (literally) the recording session. When it began and the orchestra started playing the parts I'd written, I realized that this thing was actually going to work, and that was among the most rewarding moments I've had at Berklee.

A couple of quick notes: Due to some problems with the ProTools session's formatting, I haven't been able to mix the different instruments of the orchestra individually. If I can figure out how, I may post a remix. Along the same lines, my vocal track was recorded on a tight deadline and no sleep. While it doesn't represent the best of my singing abilities, I've still kept it in, as the instrumental parts were written around and in support of the lead vocal melody.

Let Go (Orchestral Arrangement) (The Brew cover)

UPDATED: This is a song that I wrote for Carla Nelson, a dear friend and colleague of mine, after she was diagnosed with an aggressive form of lung cancer in the Winter of 2016. She was one of the toughest and most wonderful people I've ever met, and for her to have to face that was truly heartbreaking on so many levels. As there wasn't much else that I could do, I wrote this song, and recorded and produced it through one of my courses at Berklee. My hope is that it can provide encouragement and love to anyone that needs it as they fight whatever uphill battles stand in their way.

When Carla was first diagnosed, she was given roughly six weeks to live. Incredibly, she lived for another two years before passing away in 2019. I miss her every day, but I'm incredibly grateful for the additional time that she had with all of us.

Incidentally, the rhyme of "the end" and "the end" is deliberate. It comes from a Zulu proverb, as shared by Johnny Clegg: "Everything will work itself out in the end, so it it hasn't worked itself out yet, that means it isn't the end."

Not Done Yet

About a year ago, I recorded this cover for the next Bruuuuce.com charity Hornsby tribute record, the second I've been involved with. Unfortunately, numerous bumps in the road have delayed that project significantly. While I'm assured that it's still in the works, the director of the project encouraged me to also share the track I contributed here. When the tribute compilation is released, I'll provide a link to it here in this description.

This is one from deep in the vaults. I made this MIDI mock-up arrangement of my song "The Fire" back in early 2014 for a Berklee course, and pretty much forgot all about it. I heard it for the first time in several years yesterday, and it had more staying power than I'd thought, so I've decided to upload it! Enjoy!

The Chain (Fleetwood Mac Cover)

Original music: "Subcon Forest Time Rift" by Pascal Michael Stiefel

To make a very long story short, I was commissioned to write lyrics to a song from the soundtrack of the video game "A Hat in Time" by Masae Anela, one of my favorite streamers and content creators. Of course, because I can never pass up the opportunity to overcomplicate things, I not only wrote lyrics, but recorded an entire arrangement in my home studio, playing all the instruments and doing all the editing and mixing myself in my "spare time."

To explain the title and the lyrics, the part of the game the originally-instrumental song appears in is a deep forest full of sleeping raccoons that are floating in the air. Yeah, this game is a little strange.

So as it turns out, my original version of this song was too long for my Songwriting class project, so I sped it up and re-did the vocal track. The original recording came out slower than I'd envisioned, and I really think this tempo does the song more justice.
