The Town I Used to Know (Single)

The Town I Used to Know [Official Audio]

I learned this song in a local jazz ensemble many years ago, and it's still a favorite of mine. It was written by Rube Bloom and Sammy Gallop, and first recorded by Gordon Jenkins. Since then, it's been recorded by everyone from Frank Sinatra to Diana Krall, but always in the original, jazz big-band fashion, with strings and choirs and all that. I still haven't found a recording in the style I learned it in (a more soft, straightforward ballad), so I decided to make one.

This is both a new song and a public service announcement. 

I actually combined about four different concepts I've been working on and mashed them all together to create this. I hope to smooth it out a little more over time, but deadlines have once again intervened.

Tell Me So

To make a long story short, I found myself with the task of taking the amazing song "Growls" by my friend Annie Johnson and rewriting it in a groove of swing 16th notes. This was the result, and she liked it enough that she suggested I post it here for the world! If you want to hear her original version (trust me, you do. It's absolutely astounding), here's a link:

Without a doubt, this is my favorite John Hiatt song. He takes the simplest chord progression in all of music, but adds a variation in the harmonic rhythm that makes it incredibly unique.

I played all instruments (guitar, charango, piano, vocals, and penny whistle) except the mandolin, which was played by my very talented father Tod Campbell.

This song's pretty self-explanatory, I think. I've been working on it for a long time, but it took some incredible lyrical insights from both my mother Susan and the amazing songwriter Ms. Sam De Rosa to finally make it happen.

(He's The) Luckiest Man In The World

When I first wrote this one, I had a vision of how I wanted it to turn out. Thanks to the immense talents of Kevin Arndt on drums, Tristan Young on bass, and especially Marty Walsh on guitars, that vision was not only realized, but exceeded in ways I could never have imagined. 

Perpetual State Of Panic (Band Version)

I didn't actually plan to post this, but people have liked it enough that I've decided to anyway. Please read the description!

Now I know what you're thinking: "ANOTHER Peter Gabriel cover!?" But this time, I have a good reason. This is the final project for my Vocal Writing course at Berklee. I had to do an a cappella arrangement, and I've always dreamed of doing one of "Solsbury Hill." Of course, when I first had that dream, my voice was still healthy. As I am now, this is the best I could pull together on a really tight schedule. There are definitely a few cringeworthy moments, but in my defense, YOU try recording seven tracks of your own voice and get them to line up perfectly! :) Here, it's the arrangement that counts, not so much the performance. With all that said, enjoy!

Solsbury Hill (a cappella Peter Gabriel cover)

This is my final project from my Writing for Small Ensemble course at Berklee. Inspired by a rendition that my longtime friend and former teacher Todd Marston came up with that we played together on a few occasions, I took the concepts of the arrangement a little bit further and came up with this. All instruments are synthesized except the guitar, which I played.

Famous Blue Raincoat (Leonard Cohen cover)

Luiza Carvalho, the guitarist on the "Tell Me So" track, is a fantastic producer, so she tried her hand at mixing it. As it happens, her mix completely leaves mine in the dust. ;)

One from the vaults. This is a track I recorded back in December of 2013, back when I could sing those notes. It's a cover of a song by a dear friend and collaborator of mine, Frederikke Bohr. I'd accompanied her for this song many times when we were performing, and I ended up doing my own version just for fun while I was testing out some new recording software.

This one is a lyrical concept I've had lying around for a long time that finally came to fruition when a class project required me to write a new original. After demoing it, I went into the Berklee studios and had it recorded by our professors' on-call session musicians (Unfortunately, I don't know their full names, so I can't give proper credit right now, but I know Takuma was on drums, Sean was on bass, and Yusak was on piano), along with the amazing Jannek Zechner on guitar, resulting in this classic-rock powerhouse!

Scars

For my Contemporary Writing and Production portfolio at Berklee, I needed to have an electronic piece. With my professor's blessing, I decided to transform my composition for strings (found elsewhere on my page here) into an electro-rock track. Admittedly, my initial reason for doing so was to save time amidst finals by not having to write a completely new piece, but in the end, reimagining the strings composition in this way proved to be a very stimulating, challenging, and enjoyable intellectual exercise. I can't decide which version of this song I like better. What about you?

One Last Shot (Electronic Version)

UPDATED: This is a song that I wrote for Carla Nelson, a dear friend and colleague of mine, after she was diagnosed with an aggressive form of lung cancer in the Winter of 2016. She was one of the toughest and most wonderful people I've ever met, and for her to have to face that was truly heartbreaking on so many levels. As there wasn't much else that I could do, I wrote this song, and recorded and produced it through one of my courses at Berklee. My hope is that it can provide encouragement and love to anyone that needs it as they fight whatever uphill battles stand in their way.

When Carla was first diagnosed, she was given roughly six weeks to live. Incredibly, she lived for another two years before passing away in 2019. I miss her every day, but I'm incredibly grateful for the additional time that she had with all of us.

Incidentally, the rhyme of "the end" and "the end" is deliberate. It comes from a Zulu proverb, as shared by Johnny Clegg: "Everything will work itself out in the end, so it it hasn't worked itself out yet, that means it isn't the end."

Not Done Yet

About a year ago, I recorded this cover for the next Bruuuuce.com charity Hornsby tribute record, the second I've been involved with. Unfortunately, numerous bumps in the road have delayed that project significantly. While I'm assured that it's still in the works, the director of the project encouraged me to also share the track I contributed here. When the tribute compilation is released, I'll provide a link to it here in this description.

Stander On The Mountain (Bruce Hornsby cover)

Original music: "Subcon Forest Time Rift" by Pascal Michael Stiefel

To make a very long story short, I was commissioned to write lyrics to a song from the soundtrack of the video game "A Hat in Time" by Masae Anela, one of my favorite streamers and content creators. Of course, because I can never pass up the opportunity to overcomplicate things, I not only wrote lyrics, but recorded an entire arrangement in my home studio, playing all the instruments and doing all the editing and mixing myself in my "spare time."

To explain the title and the lyrics, the part of the game the originally-instrumental song appears in is a deep forest full of sleeping raccoons that are floating in the air. Yeah, this game is a little strange.
