I learned this song in a local jazz ensemble many years ago, and it's still a favorite of mine. It was written by Rube Bloom and Sammy Gallop, and first recorded by Gordon Jenkins. Since then, it's been recorded by everyone from Frank Sinatra to Diana Krall, but always in the original, jazz big-band fashion, with strings and choirs and all that. I still haven't found a recording in the style I learned it in (a more soft, straightforward ballad), so I decided to make one.

This is both a new song and a public service announcement. 

I actually combined about four different concepts I've been working on and mashed them all together to create this. I hope to smooth it out a little more over time, but deadlines have once again intervened.

Bridge Porn (Streets Of Rage 1) - Luiza 177 (2018)

Building on Michel Chion’s desire to be finished with the concept of noise*, I want to create a space where tempered and non-tempered sonorities can coexist. The traditionally unwanted sounds that would be removed during the post-production editing of a piano concert recording are not only given a prominent voice but also amplified and spatialized. I see Hidden Sounds as a dialogue between socially accepted sounds, such as brilliantly executed scalar passages, and traditionally avoided sounds, such as un-pitched noise. The length of phrases is undetermined and before starting a new idea the performer needs to wait for the piano to wind down. By refraining from the temporal grid, I provide space for a conversation between the performer and the instrument. 

*“Pour en finir avec la notion de bruit” is the preface to the epilogue of Chion’s book Le Promeneur écoutant: essais d'acoulogie
