I actually combined about four different concepts I've been working on and mashed them all together to create this. I hope to smooth it out a little more over time, but deadlines have once again intervened.

For my Contemporary Writing and Production portfolio at Berklee, I needed to have an electronic piece. With my professor's blessing, I decided to transform my composition for strings (found elsewhere on my page here) into an electro-rock track. Admittedly, my initial reason for doing so was to save time amidst finals by not having to write a completely new piece, but in the end, reimagining the strings composition in this way proved to be a very stimulating, challenging, and enjoyable intellectual exercise. I can't decide which version of this song I like better. What about you?

Bridge Porn (Streets Of Rage 1) - Luiza 177 (2018)

Building on Michel Chion’s desire to be finished with the concept of noise*, I want to create a space where tempered and non-tempered sonorities can coexist. The traditionally unwanted sounds that would be removed during the post-production editing of a piano concert recording are not only given a prominent voice but also amplified and spatialized. I see Hidden Sounds as a dialogue between socially accepted sounds, such as brilliantly executed scalar passages, and traditionally avoided sounds, such as un-pitched noise. The length of phrases is undetermined and before starting a new idea the performer needs to wait for the piano to wind down. By refraining from the temporal grid, I provide space for a conversation between the performer and the instrument. 

*“Pour en finir avec la notion de bruit” is the preface to the epilogue of Chion’s book Le Promeneur écoutant: essais d'acoulogie
