Spring Palindromes (Dark Winter snippets) (disquiet0177-netlabelportrait)

I was playing around with Cecilia5 which is awesome for real-time processing, clicked random sound which came up with a vocoder preset and it had already emphasized the bells and got rid of most of the background sounds! I fiddled about with it coz there was a little distortion and to make it sound a little more weird but then all i needed to do was a bit of gentle levelling and fading out in audacity. This is the first couple of minutes.

The main thing I've learned recently is how to cede control to an instrument, like how inuits (and other cultures) say: the sculpture is already there. i just need to tease it out. So there's more of a collaboration, feedback loop, between performer and instrument.

Here, I used acidrack pressed the random button to get a synth tone, then pressed random again because i didnt like the first one. i fed this tone through a load of echo and delay in podfarm. i used excel to generate random notes, then improvised based on these constraints. 

The long rhythmic echoes suggested long gaps between the notes but sometimes these echoes were lower in the mix so i'd play quicker, at the same time i was cognizant of what had already happened and how close it felt to the end.

The track title was found by 'conducting' my swype keyboard on my phone to produce two words. Art was found by searching google images for these words and manipulating an image i liked

Chinook Showroom {ambientechoes} [disquiet0179-techniquetalk] (shortened)

I represented each of the six dolls as an instrument -  the bass doll, then opening up we hear my voice, then mountain dulcimer, then kalimba, 12 string guitar and glockenspiel. Then I reversed it as the doll is put back together and we just hear the bass to close.

The bass starts off with more fx then I remove more and more fx from the instruments as it opens up.

I tried to restage the image with my instruments!

Use the Russian nesting dolls as a model for a musical composition.

the first recording of vocals for my matryoska track i couldnt fit with the other instruments. i loved the concept of this track: https://soundcloud.com/jmmy-kpple/untitled-matryoshkoid-disquiet0180-matryoshkamusic and used it here.. although for the first minute i was stretching it rather than compressing it but fuck it i love mistakes, and anyway it degrades the sample further which i wanted because it wouldve taken too long to record 50 odd iterations at decreased mp3 quality.

this was too creepy for my girfriend 'why have you got to make frightening music?'

Master Musicians Of Bukkake  -  Where Apollo Meets Delphi (quad) - August 2015

i often listen to the little clock in the spare room when i'm meditating; how it sounds slightly different with each tick; and i like listening for the rhythm of different clocks ticking around the house.

the track is made only from a clock sample. i recorded the sound of the clock ticking and incidental sounds for a couple of minutes, and that forms the backbone. then in cecilia5 i made 4 different rhythms - some repetitive, some chaotic (one of the beats i played with the frequencies in real time). i paulstretched a single tick 5000% for a nice drone, then cloned that added tremolo and pitched down for some low-end. i ran the original sample through a load of echo fx in podfarm2. i used the waveguide models module in cecilia5 for some fuller sounds (although i don't know if that 'adds' anything to the sample.. don't really understand what that does.. anyone?)

The Complete Sonambient Collection features all 11 Bertoia Sonambient releases newly restored from the original master reels. A heavy duty box holds 11 CDs each packaged in replica sleeves and a 100 page booklet contains a lengthy historic essay, a Smithsonian interview with Harry Bertoia, exclusive Sonambient era material from the Bertoia archive,  photos of the Sonambient barn during Harry's lifetime and updated with many shots of the barn today.  Also included are reflections on Bertoia from David Sefton, Tom Welsh, David Harrington (Kronos Quartet) and all three of Bertoia's children.


In the late fifties Harry Bertoia began working on long-form improvised compositions by utilizing pure acoustic tones produced using his own pure metal sound sculptures.   Bertoia coined the term "Sonambient" to desribe the music of his sculptures and the lush overtones they evoked, renovated a barn on his property deep in the PA woods, and often recorded his nightly sessions in the barn using 4 overhead microphones and a 1/4" tape recorder. Bertoia dedicated the last twenty years of his life to his Sonambient work and in 1970 he released the first Sonambient LP. In 1978, in the final months of his life, he selected recordings from his archive and produced 10 more Sonambient records. He would not live long enough to see these records in person.

when i was 12 or 13 my music teacher at school was horrible: mean and impatient - she'd grab kids fingers and press them hard into the 'right' keys when we made mistakes. there was no relationship between my burgeoning love of music and what i had to contend with at school. i never learnt to read music, and looking at this image reminds me of sitting in front of a keyboard thinking 'what the fuck?'

so i sat in front of my electric piano and just played what i felt. then i've hidden this playing in a number of ways - i've cloned the track and blurred it with paulstretch, reverb, echo a few times.

and i used amazing midi to convert the recording to midi to add some random variance and then created 3 separate soundscapes with different fx in live 8

So this week's Junto assignment was just to record the sound of ice in a glass. I made my recording using the old walkman (sorry Sony) pictured. All sounds are from the one recording. More tech / writing detail follows...

I recorded from the walkman to my laptop, and slowed the resulting file down quite a bit in AudioMulch.  I listened to that slowed file in Reaper and chopped out rhythmic parts, tweaking the timing of them to make them all in in sync with the first loop I'd found. I then exported the results back to AudioMulch. 

I made the main percussion loop just a simple single bar of 4/4 time, and then added five more percussion samples with different bar lengths.  So the additional percussion lands in different places against the main loop, e.g. one sound comes in every 9 beats, another every 17, etc.

I reversed the original tape recording and put it in the track through both tape delay and reverb plugins (all praise Valhalla VSTs).

The most intense tweaking I did was to create kicks - I copied the main loop and gated it so only the bits I wanted to emphasise come through, lowpassed that, gave it a HUGE EQ boost down around 50 Hz, then highpassed the very lowest frequencies out.  That's then running through a low feedback, quiet delay to add kind of "ghost note" kicks.

The rest of the composition is just mixing - automation of filters, EQs, gains to bring elements in and out and some panning to distinguish different percussive loops more.

Organic Disquiet Junto Project 0222 Bounded Foundation

I started with the bottom track being the rhythm track made in an assortment of ways including tempo changes, cross fading and moving a loop around. I added some Vangelish synths that I cross faded between for the cloudy atmosphere. When I visualize the dancer she is combines a fluid movement with the movements aided by long flowing robes. She also performs jerky movements at the same time in a trace-like state, like in a voodoo ritual, but in sci-fi attire. Cloud #3 (disquiet0222-boundedfoundation)

I have never attempted to create something for choreography and felt somewhat daunted by the notion. How repetitive should the piece be? Is too rhythmical a constraint on the dancer? All these questions and more went through my head making the piece. Thankfully the brief gave me some idea of what was expected, so I tried to stick as closely to the idea as possible but wanted to also add something of an electronic twist to the piece, without turning it into club music. I wanted something that had a heartbeat, a pulse but was also textured and tonal.

I began by generating some low end, using the MIDImadness generative software to create an altering bass pattern for a patch I had made on the Phonec 2 virtual synth. I then added another instance of MIDImadness to trigger some hi hats that had been delayed and automated to create an evolving texture of crackle and hiss. Finally I used a voice in Omnisphere to create the ambient tones which float above the rest of the soundbed.

so i'm super wary of these choreographic juntos *but* this thing i've been tinkering with this week seemed sort of appropriate - a looming, out-of-phase low sine wave, an awkward scrape/thump/scratch arhythm made of cutlery & polysterene . . . the processing is reletively light, but definite - a little granular delay adn reverb, a little phasing; f i l t r a t i o n of various levels. so.

ran it thru live 8 slowed it down to 97bpm and had a load of the electronica (eq/compressn filters) running and slippery loop for the 4:4 thing. i was adjusting the harmonics and frequency live

then i had it ran thru again with dream guitar and six string ambience for that above the clouds windy stuff (that's pretty low down in the mix)

Disquiet Junto Project 0222: Bounded Foundation
The Assignment: Compose a piece for contemporary dance — with a “soft top” and a “shifting bottom.”

This is the second project we’re doing with artist and engineer Paolo Salvagione for an extended piece of choreography he’s working on. The result of the project is intended for potential use as a sonic backdrop for the dance performance, and also as a form of research into the materials and ideas being explored by Salvagione and the dancers. (Audio produced for this Junto project will not be used by Salvagione without its composer’s permission.)

Step 1: You will be creating a short, roughly four-minute piece of music. First, take into consideration the setting. Visualize that the piece would be performed by a young solo female dancer. She is dancing in a large space. The sounds of this Junto are the only sounds accompanying her movement.

Step 2: Your piece should have two perceived “levels.” The “top” level should be soft and cloud-like. The “bottom” level should be firm but ever-shifting.

Step 3: Make a piece of sound/music roughly four minutes long that meets the criteria of Step 2.

Step 4: Upload your completed track to the Disquiet Junto group on SoundCloud.

Step 5: Annotate your track with a brief explanation of your approach and process.

Step 6: Then listen to and comment on tracks uploaded by your fellow Disquiet Junto participants.

Deadline: This project was posted in the morning, California time, on Thursday, March 31, 2016, with a deadline of 11:59pm wherever you are on Monday, April 4, 2016.

Length: The length is up to you, though between two and five minutes seems about right.

@telechir 's track provides the backbone.. all i did was loop the beat, add a drop,  + some reverb and delay in the second half.
@petemaskreplica 's drone provides the whooshy hihatty sounds and horn.. i eq'd the low end a bit so it wasnt so clogged
@davedorgan 's ambient piece brings in the bell sounds. i got some harmonics at 660hz and layered in some tonality too.

Disquiet Junto Project 0234: Remix Ximer

This week’s Junto project builds directly on last week’s, though you needn’t have participated in last week’s to join in this one. This week we’re remixing remixes. The remixes we’re remixing are the pieces that resulted from last week’s project, which involved taking three tracks from different netlabels and making one new track from them. Last week’s Junto project celebrated derivatives, as licensed by the Creative Commons. This week’s celebrates derivatives of derivatives. (Thanks to Audio Obscura, aka Neil Stringfellow, for proposing this week’s project.)

These are the steps:

i used acidrack and pressed the same key over and over again.
i had a heap of fx in ableton - ddly>podfarm2>feed me back>six string ambience>loop slippery
lots of echo, distortion .. 6 string ambience mulches things up a bit.. loop slippery added that beat

perfect project for me - i'm always adding way too much fx
