An original musical! Don’t we all wish we could just go back to normal? Back to the way things used to be - before Covid, before the floods and wildfires, before we had Nazis rioting in the streets and in the Capitol, before the news was full of racist cops and sexually abusive men and greedy corporatists, and before four years of a honey-baked ham-brained criminal in the White House? Doesn’t that sound nice… or does it? Before we try to revive the good old days maybe we should ask - was the old normal really that good? Was it good at all? Well we created a musical about that! So settle back as we present a trip down reality lane with “Back to the Way It Was Before”.

Episode 10 was written and directed by Michael Gene Sullivan. Music by Daniel Savio. The band features woodwinds by Dylan Jennings, bass by Jewell McMillon, drums & percussion by David Rokeach, and keyboards by Daniel Savio. And the amazing SFMT Band featuring Will Durkee (Guitars), Daniel Savio (Keyboards), and Jason Young (Drums).

Marcia Stone has no problem with being at the vanguard of driving the nation around the bend. It’s her key to getting a nightly slot on the network, and if she can give her viewers a focus for their fear, a hellhole of depravity and failed policies so much the better! And where better than the filthy, dangerous streets of San Francisco to illustrate for her bosses and audience the depths to which the progressives have dragged us? If only she could find a person on those streets… someone to personify America’s…Breakdown.

For most of the citizens of increasingly intolerant San Francisco a young woman like Cassandra living on the streets seems “crazy,” but maybe Cassie is just ahead of the curve. Unbalanced? Unhinged? Nuts? In a country that has clearly lost its mind, what do any of those words mean anymore? As her social worker tries to navigate the Kafkaesque labyrinth of city bureaucracy Cassie is on her own quest to regain what has been taken from her.

The American Dream. It used to mean a job, a house, a car, a spouse, 2.5 kids, and a .4 dog. But what does it mean now? For Gabriel Pearce, a Black man tired of liberal failures, on the day after the presidential election it means victory! Giving up on progressivism wasn’t easy, but casting his vote for a Conservative who promise to be grateful could mean a dream come true. However, for his daughter Paine - a teacher at a university caught between protesting students and threats to funding - it’s a nightmare! Or was the lost election just a dream? Or will A.I. catch fire, like Oliver sees in his nightmares? Do androids dream of electronic voting? Can we create the utopia of justice activist student Emma hopes for, or is the present just a dream within a dream within a dream. But whether you’re asleep or Woke what some see as nightmares others see as… American Dreams.

In a city where nothing is more important than “innovation,” son of immigrants Augie Dimalanta (Jed Parsario) works hard. His friend Elizabeth (Lizzie Calogero) may think patching over problems is counterrevolutionary, but after his shift at the “Fried T’ings Diner” Augie's life’s all about helping his neighbors navigate an increasingly underfunded and inhuman system. His efforts to make up for the cuts are making a real difference, but at what point does he need to stop plugging the holes in the system and try to change it instead? And while Augie is filling holes, tech genius Zubari Macintosh (Alicia M. P. Nelson) is busy digging more! As the head of MOPS (The Mayor’s Office of Public Safety) she's all about optimization and “efficiency,” making a city attractive to investors and the right kind of people - and who wouldn’t want that? Never mind that she has no experience beyond developing a social media app - how hard can government be? Maybe the only real barrier to giving the people what they really want all this time has been the inefficiency of democracy itself. And with proudly working-class, red-hatted police officers like Hector Washington (Michael Gene Sullivan) to clear the streets, San Francisco will soon be a beautiful and prosperous suburb of Silicon Valley - and hopefully in time for the president’s upcoming visit. But if the city is poised to be a calm, efficient paradise why is everything suddenly on… FIRE!
