Laura Flanders: How do you be yourself and break the boundaries that you wanna break? And not alienate too many people along the way… You talked about moving into a very macho scene as a new musician…
Kathleen Harris: Yeah! It was pretty crazy back then. And its interesting that I meet women in their twenties now who are like asking me about the band or like what shows were like because they werent there… and I say oh well there was a lot of violence, and it was this thing of constantly being told to like… take off our tops… and like that kind of thing, yelling from the audience, and things like that still happen, and especially maybe more in the underground scene more than the (indistinguishable) scene which I’ve kind of moved more into, and its a lot better now. And theres a lot more women at shows and diversity at shows in general.
…I personally was shocked it was as bad as it was.
Laura Flanders: I mean we’re not talking the sixties we’re talking the nineties and your having people throw things at you!
Kathleen Harris: Oh yeah, I mean we had like chains thrown at our heads, I got pulled off the stage by my ankles once, we had our roadie who was assaulted while we were playing, she just got in the way to defend me
