The hip-hop suite, inspired by the passion for the work of Madlib and Pete Rock, is released on tape for the first time in history of the GLBDOM music atelier. It turned out that it doesn't take much: an MPC-2500 drum machine and a few favorite loops.
You are greeted by a hedonistic, highbred funkystyle straight from France. A bright symbolic tie with the voice of the godfather of soul, James Brown, gives a solid start and flies into the ears with packs of brass. Being the main style-forming feature of the album, the benefit of vinyl samples is overgrown with strings of synthesizers, basses, scratches and a slight hint of battle escapism. The vintage sound of the tape and the sprawling jazzy beats lead the entire instrumental system, emulating the golden era of early classics. The showroom of colorful moods contains references to the 90s, demonstrating the bold innovation of the rhythm maker Antoine Bermann with his occasional ambient intersperses.

Hot on the heels of two wicked releases on Lobster Theremin and SITU Records, London based producer Kempston Hardwick readies 4 bubbling cuts of summer jams with all the zesty twists of an ice cold radler on Distant Horizons.

Whilst his last releases on LT took a more UK-centred sound approach, DISTANT005 has you jumping on the first plane out of London and onto a white, sandy beach somewhere in the South Pacific. The skippy, bright beats of ‘Step With Me’ raise the curtain before the sounds of thes streets of Chicago take over on ‘Roxy’s Party’ - a classic cut of contemporary house that lends from the past while keeping one eye firmly fixated on the future.

‘Leonila’ sees Kempston take on a more experimental aesthetic; tribal drum patterns and vocal samples blend with bending synthwork and and the inspired calm that can only come from the sound of wooden instruments.

Bowing us out is ‘Cascade’, the most quintessential Kempston track on there; his distinctive take on house shining across five minutes of late-night grooves.

Shall Not Fade continues a tradition of marking its anniversary with star-studded compilations; for its sixth year, expect no less. Fans of the Bristol-based purveyor of feel-good dance music will recognise the names; members of the Shall Not Fade family from across all of its sublabels and series come together for a stellar 24 track project, presented in a triple vinyl boxset.  

Including tracks from long-time affiliates like Harrison BDP, Subjoi, Black Loops and Felipe Gordon, as well as new faces to the label like Cinthie, Kessler & Barry Can’t Swim. The compilation brings out the genre-spanning, globe-trotting ethos at the core of Shall Not Fade. The three disc vinyl package shines a light on the various sounds and styles of Shall Not Fade. Disc one is dedicated to the main Shall Not Fade label, whilst disc two focuses on bass driven sublabel Time Is Now with its focus on the delicate and dirty sound palettes of UKG and jungle, featuring label regulars Bakey and Ell Murphy. Disc three merges the sound of sub-label Lost Palms, as well as Shall Not Fade’s ‘classic cuts and ‘killer cuts’ serieses, featuring a label debut from Parisian producer Tour Maubourg, ahead of his full EP out early next year. 

With nothing but exclusive unreleased tracks from a phenomenal range of artists, the Six Years compilations shows off what makes Shall Not Fade tick and celebrates the label’s ability to constantly explore new trends.

Lorca joins the Shall Not Fade family with a debut LP consisting of 8 melodic tracks with richly-layered soundscapes made up of samples and field recordings taken from his hometown, Brighton. 

His first full-length album as Lorca, the Saudade LP sees Sam Cassman return to a melancholic and experimental sound for which he originally made a name for himself since his first release in 2012. The album’s title, written in portuguese - the language native to his current residence, Madeira - translates to English as ‘a feeling of longing, melancholy, or nostalgia’. With stripped-back percussion and plaintive atmospherics, it’s clear to see why. We are soothed into things with the soft melody of ‘Lullabies’ before being transported to Brighton Beach via field recordings of seagulls and the whisper of pebbles on the second track. The driving pulse of deep house track ‘Are You Gonna Love Me’ picks up the pace whilst maintaining a sense of minimalism before the shimmering lull of ‘Two Pianos’ brings things right back with formless sonic collages and drifting atmospherics.

Flip the record over and the rolling beats are back. ‘Colraine’ and ‘uTube’ see the return of clever use of sampling, the latter including mobile phone recordings of live piano playing by friends, sampled from social media. ‘Colraine ‘ offers up pulsating jazz rhythms, oozing with groove, before the aptly-named ‘Polly’ ushers in a change of course with a razor-sharp polyrhythmic melody and acid undertones which are more suited to the club. On ‘Rock Paper’, it’s sound design that takes centre stage. To close the LP, Lorca manipulates field recordings taken from inside his studio to incorporate abstract, sample-based percussion, making for a truly unique take on techno and synthesis.

Cork-based producer Colm K’s sound is one established on sensory exploration, with an emphasis on the symbiosis between groove and melody and its unending range of possibilities. His music has dabbled in a diverse array of styles, from sultry Hip-Hop instrumentals through to expressive breakbeat and sunny-side up house, and all the goodness inbetween. His music demonstrates an innate sense of presence, balancing out hyper-expressive rhythms with profound emotive blends that channel euphoria to create self-contained experiences that place joy in the heart.

There is a distinctive experience found within ‘A Red Line in a Blue Sky’, and that is one of letting the mind and body go between the instrumental slipstreams. A distinctive and graceful deep house excursion, the pulse is firmly established within the opening phrases of the title track. A pulsating chord rings out across the centre of the track, as the cavernous drumming pattern sets the tone underneath. Deft touches permeate across the top ends, characterised by simmering, almost floating textures and delicate motifs, all of which feel out the space with purpose. ‘One Eye’ complements the title track in that the melody meanders more, but jets off into similar waters. The atmosphere is breezy and uplifting, the rays of light spreading out across the stanzas as the vivacious chords and powerful rhythm section do much to shift the feeling up a gear.

SIxm Sol’s take on the title track fits the record like a glove. Shifts are made to the original’s formidable pulse, its presence set back ever so slightly, which gives space to the vocal samples and up-top rhythmic touches. It’s a wondrous take, emulating the spirit of the original whilst adding inventive and creative pieces in all the right places. The EP is seen out by ‘Unity’, which in many ways speaks to the record’s in-between spaces. A series of dubby melodic sequences interlace effortlessly with the rhythm section, which, along with a sample-laden backdrop, helps to construct the final take from this profound piece of house music.
