Welcoming Joe Koshin to the Time Is Now family with a release of two halves. Delirium EP takes us on a whiplash journey through the contemporary iterations of breakbeat hardcore before slowing down the pace and stationing in UKG’s shadier corners.

With previous releases on Planetaria Music and Gimme A Break Records, Joe Koshin has been making some serious waves with his no-prisoner approach to breaks and jungle. Delirium EP sees the London producer continue in this vein with two raucous breakbeat hardcore tracks, and two dark garage tracks which boast the style’s potential to be at once introspective and club-ready. 

‘Chunk’ slams things into action. And if you thought the clattering drum breaks and growling low-ends couldn’t do more to rip open a dancefloor, just wait for the switch-up. Stutters that Sully would be proud of. The title track grounds itself firmly in the genre’s antecedents: breakbeat which is at once gloriously old-skool and fiercely forward-facing. Flip to the B side and it is configurations of dark garage that take to the fore: first adorned with a hypnotic melody that floats above pitched-up vocals (‘T4LK 2 M3’), and later energised by a buoyant swing which implores you to move (‘Spectra Don’).

Dubrunner continues to shape out a vital, modernist slant on the soundsystem tradition with this second drop on his label Menace. In keeping with the approach set out on 2023’s Ruthless EP, his firm foundation of steppas, dub and digi is a springboard for explorations of broader club styles, taking in elements of breakbeat hardcore, techno and plenty more besides.

Fallen Tree builds on the promise of his debut with four further meditations. Lead single ‘Shangdao’s Revenge’ is a monolithic, moody half-stepper electrified with dub techno chord shimmers and elastic breakbeats, and spaced out with deep wells of atmospheric processing.

‘Fallen Tree’ locks into a tight 4/4 march driven by detailed percussion, with a classic steppas bassline, off-beat chord chops and distant melodica touches paying tribute to hugely influential UK steppas pioneers Alpha & Omega and their apocalyptic cut ‘Ground Is Shaking Dub’. The presence of log drums remind you Dubrunner is bringing his own fusions to the table, drawing on the amapiano explosion as fuel for this hybridised fire.

‘Overruled’ strikes a more forthright, political tone, as Dubrunner foregrounds his values in a fierce statement against the oppressive systems of state control, capitalism and racism. The vocal samples come from Sankara Future Dub Resurgence, whose focus is on Africa’s defiance of its colonial history. The taut, high-definition construction around the message takes its cues from the explosive sonics heard at Darwin’s bassweight REEF sessions in Berlin.

The breakstep lead-in on ‘Pressure’ tells you to prepare for a drum-focused workout, and that’s precisely the approach Dubrunner takes as he chops up the percussion and maintains a light-footed impact in contrast to the broad, cinematic heft of the other tracks on the EP. It’s a potent demonstration of the versatility in the Dubrunner sound, while still maintaining that grounded sense of soundsystem meditation which courses through everything he turns out.

For Oxford residents, Mayday (May 1st) is an ancient ritual marking the arrival of spring, and the one guaranteed all night party in the calendar. It's a simple formula: make it to Magdalen bridge in time for dawn.

At the city's intersection, ravers from The Bullingdon in East Oxford finally reunite wth those who chose to spend the night in one of the city's other legendary nightspots... The Cellar, Carbon, The Coven... (RIP).

Roads are closed as bizarre strung out characters flood the streets, kids sing to crowds of over 15,000 from 44 metres above as the sun rises and celebrations resume - last night's wave spilling into May morning and beyond.

For the first time in recent history, we in Oxford won't be celebrating together this Mayday. So to mark the madness that never was, we've rallied the local scene to give the rest of you a glimpse into our world... and we couldn't have asked for a more sick collection of tunes for the occasion.

True to form, we've sequenced MAYDAY to recreate the disorientating progression from the dark freakish depths of the night before, through till dawn and into the morning after. If the night before isn't your thing - feel free to join us at track 8 as the sun comes up.

Deep Cover is proud to present this 14 track introduction to just some of the incredible artists from the Oxford area. Get stuck in and help support our scene at one of its times of greatest need. All profits from this release will be divided equally between the artists involved.

Visceral Connections, the much anticipated and debut release from Bluetoof, a promising new name on the dancefloor who’s been brimming with increased potential in recent months. With his debut EP, released on BBS, Bluetoof takes the labels signature breaks style, peppers it with his own exciting new flavour then delivers back an evolved and impressive first production. In parallel, The EP is a big milestone for 5-year label BBS who, up to now, have only released beats by Benton, high expectations surely await.

Nikki Nair (@nikki-nair) rounds off 2020 with a return to Scuffed Recordings for the ‘Trying To’ EP, featuring three new originals and a remix from Hermeth (@hermeth).

Opening the EP with ‘Justtryingto’, Nikki comes straight out of the blocks with a French Touch-esque disco sample giving way to glitchy breaks and weighty bass. Next up is the supercharged ‘Trunk’, an all-out warper clocking in at 150bpm.

On the B-side is ‘cclluubb’, a broken-beat DJ tool which sees Nikki’s trademark vocal sampling carrying along a Baltimore Club-influenced beat. Closing out the EP is Swiss producer Hermeth, who brings a rowdy injection of acid to his remix of ‘Justtryingto’.
