This is our new album, ‘Phantoms Of The Northern Line’. The title (and title track) were both inspired by the remarkable photography of our friend and photographer Dom Agius, the specific photograph being the one you see used as the album’s ‘cover’.

Some time has passed since our last album, 2015’s ‘The Saturday Bridge’. We had almost two years away from recording, mainly due to wanting to avoid burn-out. There had been three Shards albums and an EP/soundtrack written, recorded and released between 2011 and 2015; sometimes, what should be a thing of pleasurable, artistic release can become something of a treadmill, an obligation…I didn’t want that to happen.

After we’d completed the logistics of releasing ‘Saturday Bridge’, I had a not inconsiderable feeling of dread at the idea of going straight back into the studio to start the sixth album.

So, for twenty months or so and while I had ideas a-plenty either in my head or in a half-formed/partially recorded state, the Shards Labs stood more or less silent. Covid-19 then came along, throwing the world into disarray and a spanner into the works as far as the music went.

That said, I think the cumulative effect was beneficial. The tracks on ‘Phantoms’ are fleshed out, fully-realised pieces which don’t feel rushed.

This is probably my favourite album of all of our releases – I hope you enjoy it.

“Mega-Tsunami” speaks for itself. I asked Brian to play me a solo that was anything but pretty. I think he delivered in spades and managed to squeeze some nice hooks into it, too. The original version we recorded had a four and a half minute solo, which although nicely done, was just too long. 

The first half of the song needed to summon up images of a 50-storey wave smashing into a large, coastal city and this does it for me. The sounds of the sea at the end are real, incidentally – we experimented with using white noise from a synthesizer, but you can never beat the real thing.

The Saturday Bridge

The Saturday Bridge Sampler (2015)

Triton has the triple distinction of being the coldest celestial body in the solar system, of being the largest of Neptune's moons and of being the only moon to have a retrograde orbit (i.e. in the opposite direction to its parent planet's spin).

Covered with a shell of frozen water, frozen carbon dioxide and frozen nitrogen, it reflects back up to 95% of the sunshine that reaches it. The average surface temperature is around -237 C...that's like Glasgow in January.

Very, very cold.

Triton also has an atmosphere (albeit a very thin one) of nitrogen and is suspected to have a subterranean ocean, like so many of the moons of the outer planets.

I loved the idea of a diving from a sedate orbit into an express-lift final approach to landing on this wasteland of a world...making swift adjustments to avoid the huge water/ammonia plumes from one of its cryo-volcanoes with the huge blue sphere of Neptune, the final proper planet in the system, looming overhead.

Final Descent To Triton (From the album 'Satellites' 2010)

Europa - if you're looking in our solar system for extra-terrestrial life-forms, that's where the actions is, according to the vast swathe of scientific opinion.

This moon of Jupiter has a scarred covering of ice over a vast ocean. Due to its proximity to the huge gravitational pull of Jupiter, it's a fair bet that the ocean is warm enough to support life. If the planned mission to land and drill through the ice to the ocean goes ahead in 2020, we'll know for sure.

Arthur C Clarke made much of this potential for life in his book "2010", where the forces who created humanity in "2001: A Space Odyssey" warn off exploring humans in order to nurture the new life on Europa.

In the book, the joint Russian-American expedition to Jupiter is overtaken by the Chinese, who race ahead of them to Europa with a water-powered ship, with the plan of landing, drilling down, refilling their fuel tanks and then heading home.

They do indeed land on Europa, but their powerful arc-lights attract some enormous, blundering, inquisitive creature from the depths, which smashes through the ice and consigns them all to a remote, icy death.

Ice Station Europa (From the album 'Satellites')

One from the wish-list, this, as opposed to one from the “been there” list. 

I’ve always wanted to see Japan, especially Tokyo. I have a huge need to experience the madness of the place, the lights, gadgetry, the people, the almost totally alien culture.
 
I must admit that images from ‘Blade Runner’ were firmly in my head when I was putting this together, although I did have a large collection of snaps of the real night-time Tokyo as an inspiration.
 
This is what’s in my head when I dream of a high-speed journey through Tokyo on a train at night, with the velocity of the train blurring everything into an insane rush of lights and indiscernible structures. I imagine it’d be better than drugs…and I hope it’s a journey I can make happen at some point.
 
Beth supplied the “Aah” vocal choir in the middle of the track, by the way…that loveliness is all her.

Tokyo, Blurred (From the album 'Memory Lake' 2012)

I realise that several other bands have put out songs with the same title (Massive Attack being the most notable), but I have no idea what inspired them.
 
My own Paradise Circus is a small ring road in the centre of Birmingham with the central library, a hotel and some retail establishments in the centre. Not exactly inspiring stuff, I agree, but it was part of my walk home from various nightclubs in Broad St when I was a youth.
 
Being the loner I was back then, I’d oft find myself alone at two or three in the morning, strolling the desolate urban roadway that was (and still is) Paradise Circus, with the strains of the band I’d just been to see still ringing (literally) in my ears.
 
I told myself back then to one day write a track about the overwhelming loneliness of those solitary times, juggling the sneaking suspicions that this was how it would always be and that nobody would really miss me if I disappeared forever in that circus with no warmth, clowns, acrobats or spotlights.

The title of this might make you think we were indulging in some mysticism or Eastern profundity, but no – far from it, really. Perish the thought.
 
The seaside town of Barmouth in Wales has a couple of hippy shops on the High Street – you know what these kind of places sell…kaftans woven by Buddhist yaks, temple bowls, joss sticks, statues of the Buddha and all the while smelling of patchouli and incense so strongly that noses in neighbouring towns are running.
 
You get the picture. 

Anyway, Barmouth has three of these shops, all owned by the same people. Opposite each other are two outlets, both called “The Fat Buddha”. Further up the street is the third shop – “The Skinny Buddha”, which happens to be at the head of a T-junction in the road. At the other end of the junction (the bottom of the ‘T’, if you will) is a view of the sea and, when the time of day and year permits, a view of the glorious sunsets that Snowdonia enjoys.
 
We were there one October, when the sun was slipping away from the afternoon towards the horizon and giving out that nameless Autumn light…pink and orange and butter yellow…you know that light. It bathes everything it touches with fingers of kindness, flattering everything it illuminates.
 
And in the scant few minutes where our star was perfectly suspended at the opposite end of the T-junction, it lit up the frontage of “The Skinny Buddha” in that pink-orange-yellow burst of light…and I thought “Hmm…that’d make a nice track.”
 
And here it is…enjoy.

Skinny Buddha & The Dying Sunset (From the album 'Memory Lake' 2012)

Yet another track I’ve wanted to write for years. 

There’s a little street, about a hundred yards long and bang in the middle of Birmingham called, as you’ve probably surmised by now, gentle reader, Needless Alley.
 
Such a strange name, such an anonymous little street and I’ve always wondered why it was so-called. Built in 1731, was it simply a mistake, given its name in a fit of pique by the then town fathers? Very odd, but in a charming, orphan-like way.
 
I’d had a tune for this track up my sleeve for quite a while (even before most of ‘Satellites’ was written) and I was chatting to my mom about this album and what it was based on, mentioning Paradise Circus (see above) and Needless Alley. “That’s strange you should be writing about Needless Alley,” she said. “Your gran knew someone who ran the café which used to be there…and the owners there made my one and only birthday cake when I was growing up.”
 
She’d never told me this before and her story, offhand but touching, made me want to change the music for the track, which is exactly what I’ve done. This is an entirely new piece, far more laid back than the one I was going to use, stripped back to a ‘nod and a wink’ piano/double bass interplay around a theme.
 
It’s dedicated to the now long-gone little girl my mom used to be, all excited in Needless Alley and carrying the only birthday cake she’d ever have.

Needless Alley (From the album 'Memory Lake' 2012)

No, not some soundtrack for a bizarre new form of animal cruelty, but a celebration of one of our favourite places – Dovedale in Derbyshire’s Peak District.
 
The stones in question are stepping stones across the River Dove, just before it starts to get really serious about being a river.
 
A fantastic place – peaceful, unspoilt, painfully picturesque, where mobile ‘phones don’t work and the only sounds are the sheep, the birds and the river itself. If, by chance, you remember the old version of our website, I was photographed in an “Oops, missus, where’s me kestrel?” pose with the very stones I speak of here just behind me.
 
In winter especially, it’s a magical spot – crows cawing like jet-black clichés, bare trees silhouetted against steel-blue skies above the snow-covered peaks either side of the river, hints of ice at the riverbank…and the Dove, swollen by winter rains and thaws, sweeping over the stones and roaring off to the south.
 
This is Beth’s favourite on the album – “Definitely a winter track,” quoth she and I agree. I recorded this in December and I think it shows.

I wrote in the blurb above for “This Town” that the track was based on Dom Agius’ wonderful photos of London – and here is another track inspired by the photographic work of yet another genius we know.
 
Many, many months ago, I happened to see a photo by our friend and photographer Derek Busch of a serene lake scene…trees in fog with a sunrise behind them and instantly fell in love with it. “Please let me use that for an album,” I asked, to which Derek graciously agreed.
 
When we were getting close to the end of the recording sessions, I asked Derek for the high-res version of the picture, which he duly sent. At this point, we had no album title, although we’d run through and rejected quite a few. One afternoon, I sat gazing at Derek’s lake photo, drinking in the majesty of it all and suddenly got the title in my head – “Memory Lake”.
 
Several self-congratulatory minutes later, I decided that the least I could do was to write Derek (and the album) a title track as an act of thanks. One Saturday afternoon shortly thereafter, Beth leapt into the shower and I sat down at one of the studio keyboards to try to get a few notes together for what I thought would be a simple, two-minute ambient-piano track.
 
Fast forward two weeks and there I was with the framework of a track lasting over eight minutes and far and away one of the stand-out cuts on the album, all written and played with Derek’s wonderful photograph in mind. Beth keeps telling me “That track IS the picture.”
 
I hope so – and this one, Derek, is for you. Just like “This Town”, without your input, there’d be no such track and a differently titled album. I hope we’ve done you proud.

Memory Lake (From the album 'Memory Lake' 2012)

After hearing our 'Satellites' and 'Memory Lake' albums, friend and artist Bob Montgomery asked me if I'd consider writing a track for the short film he was making about Smooth Rock Falls, the small Canadian town he grew up in.
 
I naturally jumped at the chance, especially when Bob gave me access to the burgeoning collection of photographs, new and old, from Smooth Rock residents past and present.
 
It occurred to me that it might be nice to have some voice samples on the track from current and former SRF citizens and so I put out a general appeal for the same on Facebook, I had a few contributuions from some generous souls, one of which was Bob himself.
 
As good as all the voice samples I was sent were, the one outstanding recording I had was from former resident Rene Duguay. As I've said to many people, if I'd scripted and then cast the spoken vocal, I couldn't have hoped for anything better than the delivery and recollections that Rene sent to me. The simple and honest charm of his words made smile every time I worked on the track.
 
To all the people who still live in SRF, along with former residents and everyone in those bewitching, haunting, priceless photos, I hope we've done you proud. It's weird how we now have a permanent connection with this little town and its people, thousands of miles away and that we've never set foot in.
 
It's a connection we're happy to have.

Letting Go (from the soundtrack EP "Letting Go" 2013)

Our first soundtrack work, based on the small Canadian town of Smooth Rock Falls. 

The short film it's written for should be released at some point this year - please see each track for more information. 

I let Bob Montgomery (the guy who asked us to get involved in this project) have the first draft of "Letting Go" (the first track from the soundtrack EP of the same name) when I had something listenable to send to him, to allow him to position it in his film. He mailed me back to say "I love this...can I have some more?" Bob actually wanted 20 minutes of music from me, so I set about a second track for him.
 
"Les Neiges de SRF" (or, as I'm sure you'll now, "The Snows of SRF") was the fourth idea I had as the second track for Bob. Written in winter in the UK during the snowstorms we had, it was quite easy to get into right mind-set.
 
This track is unique to this EP and will not appear on any future releases.

Les Neiges de SRF (from the soundtrack EP "Letting Go" 2013)

Christ, did this take a long time to record. 

It actually started out as a completely different song (albeit with the same title) with a radically different vibe, lyrics, mood…the whole kit and caboodle. We ploughed through it and into it for about a month until Brian made the off-hand remark that it sounded like “Going For The One” by Yes. He was right, it did….it really did, so we binned it. 

I’m glad we followed our instinct – this version of the vision of a global internment and the smug, incredulous reaction of those responsible is one of the best things we’ve done thus far. To say we were meticulous, picky and exacting with this song is something of an understatement. 

Brian’s contrasting guitar parts on this song are masterful; no matter what shape a track takes, he always manages to weld some really stirring hooks into it and this track is a perfect example. Just listen to the way his first solo at the end shadows the melody of the chorus vocal with a sinister undertone.
