To round off our ‘Women Jungle Producers of the 90s’ series we have a special mix from DJ Flight & Mantra ft MC Chickaboo. The mix exclusively features music made by those in our posts, with releases ranging from years 1993-2001 covering a range of styles. We loved putting this together - completely spontaneous and unplanned, we felt a different energy while recording and were so happy with the end result. Sharp FM 006 coming in hot! We're honored to present a custom mix by Tim Reaper. As a venerable pioneer of London’s contemporary jungle revival, Reaper’s visibility in global electronic music culture feels perfunctory—this is just what happens when you put the music first, and you do it well.

Reaper anticipates the spring equinox and gives spark to Aries’ fire with an all-vinyl mix that displays jungle’s virtuosic syncopations and body high-inducing bass frequencies; he touches upon both classic and contemporary legends with customary deftness, zeroing in on the combustive rowdiness of the scene’s ragga subgenre. We’re primed for warmer weather.

Given his prolific output, it’s obvious that Reaper works quickly, but he surprised us by sending over a completed mix before we even knew he was onboard for the project:

"This mix was recorded on vinyl, me playing some of my favourite ragga style jungle tunes from ‘93-’96, as well as some newer style ragga jungle bits, including a new remix I've done for M-Beat. "

006: Tim Reaper

In the last couple of years, London's SHERELLE (@iamsherelle)has torn through the dance music world like a tornado. Everything she does is high speed and high impact, from what she mixes to the way she mixes it. Her dizzying mix of footwork, jungle and drum & bass has breathed new life into the 160bpm scene and got people all over Europe in a spin. As well as solo work, she plays as part of the 6 Figure Gang and runs the Hooversound Recordings label with Naina while also championing all things leftfield on her BBC Radio 1 residency. 

Of course, her 80 minute mix for us is pure fire, a bumping ride through thrilling kick patterns, shimmering toms and drilling bass. It's underpinned with a constant sense of tension that keeps you utterly on the edge of your seat and variously explodes into life, or pulls back to a moment of unsettling calm. It tells the story of a rich history of UK music, but with a fresh perspective that makes it all the more vital.
