On the 5th of December 2013 Nelson Mandela died in Johannesburg. His name stands for a life long struggle to rid his people of the curse of apartheid and oppression. During the course of this struggle he spent many years in jail as a political prisoner, before he finally became the first black president of South Africa and a symbol of identification for a whole continent.

We decided to do a little theme mix to honor this big man and his historical achievements. This mix entirely consists of classic Reggae tunes commenting on the life and work of Nelson Mandela. Many of those tunes are from back in the 1980s, when Mandela was still imprisoned. This also makes the music featured here a very interesting document of contemporary history. This mix gives you a very good impression of how Caribbean artists have always shown a very deep interest in the political struggle of the people of the African continent.

I lent this tape out and never got it back!!! I found it again and downloaded the .mp3 file from Dancehall Reggae website and re-mastered the audio. If I find out the person who uploaded the file I will mention their name.

This dance was controversial because Bodyguard was on a winning streak beating sounds all over the world with their "SPECIAL DUBS", this all changed when Waggy Tee voiced these Eddie Murphy intros or soundalike!!

In 1984 I teamed up with my two brothers the late Pupa Davis and Rev Didah and  started a sound called it Dread Brothers Promotions.They started doing small gigs at the Garden Square until I finally left Roots Inity Promotion in 1985. We then started doing our gigs in a big scale playing around Clubs like Chiromo and Alliance Club. In the summer of 1985, Ras Ken Ambasu and Daddy Chosh joined the sound.

I left for Germany in 1985 and worked for a year. In  1986 and went to Denmark and bought my first music equipment and went back to Kenya. It was very easy for us to go mobile playing around the country because we had our own Sound System which was the first one in Kenya. I visited Shashamane land in Ethiopia as a member of the twelve tribes of Israel and met Dennis Brown. That is when I decided to change the name of the sound to Shashamane International..

In 1987 I organized the first sound and Dj clash at the City Hall in Nairobi including one from Birmingham England with a brother called Teflah. That is when I met Terrence Munene and since he was the youngest and the baddest of them all in the competition, I gave him the name of Youthman Terry and added him on the sound right away.
We Started playing at Hollywood Club and in late 1987 I went back to England where I met Dennis Brown again and he did my first Dubplate for the sound, a song called country living. In 1990 I went To New York  and settled in Harlem. Back home, we moved from Hollywood Club to Monte Club. And Daddy Freddy, King Monday, MC Fanya, MC Frank, Daddy Augustinoh, Ras Panyaley, Oga Sura Mbaya, Dj. Sweta and MC Juce joined the sound.

In New York City I opened up a store on 125 street and St. Nicholas Avenue. And hooked up with some youths from the neighborhood who used to frequent my store and hear me play loud Reggae music on the street. Their names were James Bond, Little Fox, Six Killer and Danger One. And our manager was Sister Dorsey who was our manager. 

The current members of the sound are Ringo, Short Boss, Dj. 4eign, Dj. Murphy, Dj. Bugs, Dj Priest, Jahmo, Albinorock, Daddy Chosh, Dj. Augostinoh, Toni Dread, Rev Didah, Dj. Chevy, Prince Otachh and Ranking Charlie.
